The tool is not intended to prpvide absolute answers on the effect of different design features, but rather to provide insight into general performance and cost trends associated with the use of those design features.

Drawing upon previous work, a prototype PRS was developed that considers the expected life-cycle cost of the as-constructed pavement as the overall measure of quality. The approach calls for measurement of in situ concrete properties and explicitly considers variability and multiple quality characteristics in the determination of pay adjustments. Extensive laboratory testing was conducted to determine material relationships needed in the prototype PRS, and a detailed test plan has been developed for the evaluation of construction variables (eg dowel misalignment) that significantly affect concrete pavement performance but are not currently accounted for in the specification. A computer program, PaveSpec, has been developed for use with the specification in simulation and in generating pay adjustments.

Book excerpt: Design investigations and limited testing of model and prototype slabs indicate that prestressed pavements permit a more efficient use of construction materials in terms of required pavement thickness. Prestressed pavements can be designed with fewer joints and with less probability of cracking than conventional rigid pavements, thereby promising extended pavement life and reduced maintenance requirements. Information relative to the design and construction of prestressed concrete pavements is presented. Recommendations are developed on planning, design, and areas of engineering investigation and research. Minimum tests are recommended for experimental highway pavements. Design variables are discussed with factors affecting design.
