Download or read book Strategies for Increasing Productive Employment in Developing Countries with Special Reference to Sierra Leone written by Dr. Ibrahim B.S. Sesay and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book as pointed out by Professor Singer in his preface discussed divergent development problems facing developing countries. Participants of the seminar from various African countries brought in case studies from their own countries as comparison with the Kenya case study, where the seminar was held. As a result of this comparative study, field trips were organized by the seminar authorities. In view of these facts and experiences gained from this seminar, I was sufficiently stimulated for my task to write this book based on similar lines, but with special reference to Sierra Leone. My past experiences as a Labor Officer in the Ministry of Labor in Sierra Leone have, in no small way, also contributed to the success of the completion of this book for industrial relations readers to have interest in it. On joining the Personnel and Administration Department of the Standard Bank, I was moved to incorporate in my book a chapter on the role of banking particularly the role of Standard Bank formerly known as the British Bank of West Africa in Sierra Leone. Readers will also find it in one of the chapters current economic development taking place in Africa, particularly regional groupings, for example, the Mano River Union between Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia and The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the now defunct East African Economic Community. For this reason, this book will be of tremendous use to planners and economists, bankers, industrialists, teachers, and various people from all works of life concerned with the development of their countries, but it is more particularly useful to Sierra Leoneans because of the many references related to Sierra Leone.

Download or read book Working In Hotels and Catering written by Roy C Wood and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-26 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1992. The hotel and catering industry is one of the most heterogeneous of industries, consisting as it does of businesses ranging from the most humble cafe to the largest luxury hotel. Strong images of the glamorous nature of the work are often conjured up by the popular media and sit alongside the lures o f an industry in which it is theoretically possible to rise to the top from the very lowest levels. This book provides an insight into the circumstances under which hotel and catering services are provided in reality. It is the first text to provide an overview of existing research in the industry, and Wood’s account is both wide-ranging and accessible. He highlights many previously overlooked aspects of the industry, including such characteristics as low wages, high labour turnover, lack of unionisation, and heavy-handed management, which are identified and explored in such a way as to illuminate current practice.

Download or read book International Comparisons of Vocational Education and Training for Intermediate Skills written by Paul Ryan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Ryan has brought together the writings of the most prominent British research into vocational preparation in Britain in comparison to the other advanced economies, primarily within the EEC. The book, originally published in 1991, documents various aspects of inadequacy in British practice at the time, concentrating upon intermediate skills, which are of crucial importance for economic performance. The introduction outlines the strengths and weaknesses of comparative research. Part 1 discusses the use which has been made of it by policy makers in Britain and various aspects of comparative methods in practical comparisons, including an Anglo-Scottish one. Part 2 concerns vocational preparation in connection with productivity and produce markets, noting its importance for economic performance and its dependence upon companies’ product choices. Part 3 contains studies of the organization of skills and work and the finance of training within the EEC as a whole. Part 4 comprises studies of training in relation to labour market structures, each of which indicates similar alternatives for training policy in Britain – alternatives whose relevance and political prospects can only be enhanced by the demise of Thatcher government deregulatory policies.
