Book Increasing Intermodal Transportation in Europe Through Realizing the Value of Short Sea Shipping

Download or read book Increasing Intermodal Transportation in Europe Through Realizing the Value of Short Sea Shipping written by Goksel Tenekecioglu and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The current status of the short sea shipping industry is then described, followed by a discussion of intermodal transportation and the initiative within the European Community to increase the use of intermodal transportation. Two case studies are then reviewed, which demonstrate the economy of intermodal transportation solutions compared to all-road alternatives. The thesis concludes by summarizing the benefits of short sea shipping. Some of the obstacles which prevent the realization of the full potential of short sea shipping are discussed. Suggestions for improving the current situation are included as well as a description of some of the measures adopted by the European Commission to increase the use of short sea shipping as an alternative to road transportation.

Book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology

Download or read book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology written by Tiago A. Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough understanding of Short Sea Shipping (SSS) and its role in transport chains, presenting a revision of EU policies for SSS. Infrastructure and equipment required for the success of SSS are discussed, including critical features of modern roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships and terminals. Models are proposed for the evaluation of transportation demand in SSS, including the potential effects of external costs, and its results are used within the scope of methods for Ro-Ro ship and fleet sizing. A discussion of methods used to calculate such costs is provided, and a comparison of aggregated demand with and without internalisation of external costs is carried out, pointing towards solutions for ‘greening’ freight transportation. Applications of multi-criteria decision-making and simulation techniques to supply chains based on SSS are presented. The role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the promotion of SSS is also discussed. A number of case studies illustrate the different research methods and techniques. This book is a useful resource for students and researchers studying transportation, as well as policymakers and practitioners involved in this field and anyone with an interest in the promotion of environmentally sound transport solutions.

Book The Dynamics of Short Sea Shipping

Download or read book The Dynamics of Short Sea Shipping written by Stratos Papadimitriou and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book belongs to the Port Economics and Global Supply Chain Management strand of the Palgrave Studies in Maritime Economics book series, commissioned by Hercules Haralambides. This book discusses the main drivers that affect the introduction and growth of short sea shipping services. It describes and analyses the main operational concepts of short sea shipping and introduces relevant administrative and strategic approaches that enable its sustainable execution. Short Sea Shipping (SSS) comprises freight and passenger mobility by waterborne transport at a limited range, without crossing an ocean. Being a direct competitor to land-based transport modes, it uses ports and inland waterways to complement traditional transportation systems, increase capacity, improve flexibility, and contribute towards the goal of sustainable mobility. The reader will be introduced to various aspects of short sea shipping including benefits and shortfalls, relevant regulations and policies, and the applicability of short sea services within a given case or scenario.

Book Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation

Download or read book Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation written by Aleksander Sładkowski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a specific technical solution, called intermodal transport, which became the basic technological solution that made it possible to provide global interregional transport. Every day, new technical, technological, and organizational solutions appear that significantly affect the further development of this industry. However, there are certain local differences between regions. In addition, an essential factor is the exchange of experience between scientists from different countries. Accordingly, the purpose of this monothematic book is to acquaint readers with the achievements of scientists dealing with this topic and living in different regions. Scientists and specialists from Poland, Germany, Great Britain, USA, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Lithuania participated in the writing of individual chapters of this book. This book is intended for professionals, teachers, students, and others who are interested in new approaches to solving transport problems.

Book Sustainable Intermodal Freight Transport in Europe

Download or read book Sustainable Intermodal Freight Transport in Europe written by Chiara Lepori and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully operational transport system with good quality physical infrastructures and effective management tools is essential for the economic growth, as trade and transport are strongly interrelated. This book examines the problem of guaranteeing a sustainable development of the intermodal freight transport in Europe, in particular by short-sea shipping and railway transport exploitation, as these transport modes are recognized as environmentally friendly and energy efficient. In detail, Motorways of the Sea services as part of the TEN-T are described: the European policy and a state of the art of the Italian MOS system are reported, focusing on the need to integrate MOS in the door-to-door transport chain. Afterwards the spotlight shifts from line to node: the role of intermodal railway terminals in the transport chain is discussed; last mile process and its planning and management models are analysed, with reference to two Italian case studies, and a new approach to these matters is introduced. The survey may proof very useful for professionals, academics and common people who want to deal with innovative strategies and procedures for a sustainable movement of goods all over EU.

Book European Port Cities in Transition

Download or read book European Port Cities in Transition written by Angela Carpenter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seaports, as part of urban centers, play a major role in the cultural, social and economic life of the cities in which they are located, and through the links they provide to the outside world. Port-cities in Europe have faced significant change, first with the loss of heavy industry, emergence of Eastern European democracies, and the widening of the European Community (now European Union) during the second half of the twentieth century, and more recently through drivers to change including the global Sustainable Development Agenda and the European Union Circular Economy Agenda. This book examines the role of modern seaports in Europe and consider how port-cities are responding to these major drivers for change. It discusses the broad issues facing European Sea Ports, including port life cycles, spatial planning, and societal integration. May 2019 saw the 200th anniversary of the first steam ship to cross the Atlantic between the US and England, and it is just over 60 years since the invention of the modern intermodal shipping container – both drivers of change in the maritime and ports industry. Increasing movements of people, e.g. through low cost cruises to port cities, can play a major role in changing the nature of such a city and impact on the lives of the people living there. This book brings together original research by both long-standing and younger scholars from multiple disciplines and builds upon the wider discourse about sea ports, port cities, and sustainability.
