Book Increasing Accuracy in the Assessment of Motion Sickness A Construct Methodology

Download or read book Increasing Accuracy in the Assessment of Motion Sickness A Construct Methodology written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose is to introduce a new methodology that should improve the accuracy of the assessment of motion sickness. This construct methodology utilizes both subjective reports of motion sickness and objective measures of physiological correlates to assess motion sickness. Current techniques and methods used in the framework of a construct methodology are inadequate. Current assessment techniques for diagnosing motion sickness and space motion sickness are reviewed, and attention is called to the problems with the current methods. Further, principles of psychophysiology that when applied will probably resolve some of these problems are described in detail. Stout, Cynthia S. and Cowings, Patricia S. Book Effects of Command and Control Vehicle C2V Operational Environment on Soldier Health and Performance

Download or read book Effects of Command and Control Vehicle C2V Operational Environment on Soldier Health and Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The command and control vehicle (C2V) was developed to support U.S. Army tactical operation centers in heavy forces. The requirements for the C2V stipulate that it must support mobile operations and that it must support command and control (C2) from within the confines of the vehicle. However, in early testing, some human operators exhibited motion sickness during moving operations. As a result, the Human Research and Engineering Directorate of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Life Sciences Division, was directed to perform a study to quantify the incidence and severity of motion sickness and any associated performance decrement. The study would discriminate between motion effects in the C2V in parked, moving, and short halt in each seat in three seat configurations. Twenty-four soldiers were exposed to each of 12 seats (four seats in three vehicle configurations) for a 4-hour.

Book An Analysis of Physiological Data Related to Motion Sickness for Use in a Real Time Motion Sickness Indicator

Download or read book An Analysis of Physiological Data Related to Motion Sickness for Use in a Real Time Motion Sickness Indicator written by Michael E. Drylie and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis project was to continue to collect physiological data on volunteers as motion sickness was induced, analyze the data collected, test and improve motion sickness indicators previously developed, for use in a real-time processor, and develop a method for testing the susceptibility to motion sickness for individuals. The existing data acquisition system was modified to produce better accuracy of the measured data. Additional sensors were added, sensor types and placements were modified. Circuits were modified to prevent overloading and to allow better tracking of the full range of expected physiological data points. Previous indicators were evaluated as to their accuracy and degree of their usefulness in a real-time processor. A susceptibility test was developed to allow the classification of a person as to their level of motion sickness susceptibility. Physiological data were analyzed on the basis of their relationship with the onset of motion sickness, to develop a motion sickness indicator.

Book Structural Elements in the Concept of Motion Sickness

Download or read book Structural Elements in the Concept of Motion Sickness written by Ashton Graybiel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A slow rotation room in a laboratory environment provides an excellent instrument for the study of motion sickness because the experimenter can control not only the stressful Coriolis accelerations, but also other important procedural and environmental variables. By exploiting this control, combined with the judicious selection of experimental subjects, it was possible to confirm many previous findings and demonstrate that manifestations of disturbances in the vestibular system fall into two distinct categories. In the first category are reflex phenomena evoked by Coriolis accelerations when the head is rotated out of the plane of the room's rotation, and revealed through systems which, under natural stimulus conditions, have functional articulations with vestibular receiving areas. The symptomatology in the second category comprises an epiphenomenon superimposed on any manifestation of the first, when the unusual vestibular activity, presumably through facilitory-inhibitory processes, irradiates to cells or cell assemblies not normally stimulated. Selected experimental findings are used in defining the characteristics of manifestations in the two categories and in demonstrating the nature of the facultative linkage between the otherwise independent systems underlying manifestations in the two categories.

Book Measuring modelling and minimizing perceived motion incongruence for vehicle motion simulation

Download or read book Measuring modelling and minimizing perceived motion incongruence for vehicle motion simulation written by Diane Cleij and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans always wanted to go faster and higher than their own legs could carry them. This led them to invent numerous types of vehicles to move fast over land, water and air. As training how to handle such vehicles and testing new developments can be dangerous and costly, vehicle motion simulators were invented. Motion-based simulators in particular, combine visual and physical motion cues to provide occupants with a feeling of being in the real vehicle. While visual cues are generally not limited in amplitude, physical cues certainly are, due to the limited simulator motion space. A motion cueing algorithm (MCA) is used to map the vehicle motions onto the simulator motion space. This mapping inherently creates mismatches between the visual and physical motion cues. Due to imperfections in the human perceptual system, not all visual/physical cueing mismatches are perceived. However, if a mismatch is perceived, it can impair the simulation realism and even cause simulator sickness. For MCA design, a good understanding of when mismatches are perceived, and ways to prevent these from occurring, are therefore essential. In this thesis a data-driven approach, using continuous subjective measures of the time-varying Perceived Motion Incongruence (PMI), is adopted. PMI in this case refers to the effect that perceived mismatches between visual and physical motion cues have on the resulting simulator realism. The main goal of this thesis was to develop an MCA-independent off-line prediction method for time-varying PMI during vehicle motion simulation, with the aim of improving motion cueing quality. To this end, a complete roadmap, describing how to measure and model PMI and how to apply such models to predict and minimize PMI in motion simulations is presented. Results from several human-in-the-loop experiments are used to demonstrate the potential of this novel approach.
