Book excerpt: Psychologist Estelle Caylie’s life is getting complicated. Unfortunately, it didn’t even start out well. Estelle remembers very little of her troubled childhood, a childhood she survived through her voracious reading. Then with the untimely death of her brother under suspicious circumstances, Estelle goes about finding her estranged sister to unite the family for the funeral. Estelle’s childhood memories begin to return. Vague memories that are just sounds and smells and body sensations. Nothing she can put together. They come, wave after wave of them, ever more intense, pulling her under. Yet another family tragedy strengthens the riptide. Will the love that surrounds Estelle be enough? Will it get Estelle back on her feet, or will she be pulled under by the powerful tragedy and trauma that she’s experienced?

Book excerpt: In Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White takes readers across the globe to discover the science and spirit of ocean tides. In the Arctic, White shimmies under the ice with an Inuit elder to hunt for mussels in the dark cavities left behind at low tide; in China, he races the Silver Dragon, a twenty-five-foot tidal bore that crashes eighty miles up the Qiantang River; in France, he interviews the monks that live in the tide-wrapped monastery of Mont Saint-Michel; in Chile and Scotland, he investigates the growth of tidal power generation; and in Panama and Venice, he delves into how the threat of sea level rise is changing human culture—the very old and very new. Tides combines lyrical prose, colorful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet’s waters in constant motion. Photographs, scientific figures, line drawings, and sixteen color photos dramatically illustrate this engaging, expert tour of the tides.

Book excerpt: For 25 years, Franklin Roosevelt tried to build the world’s first tidal-electric power plant—by harnessing the Bay of Fundy’s giant tides. The enormous project would have dammed-up 110 square miles of coastal Maine and Canada. Moondoggle is a dramatic tale about the appeal of tidal power, the difficulties in realizing its potential, and the engineers and three U.S. Presidents (Roosevelt, Truman, and Kennedy) who tried to make clean and renewable tidal power a reality. Now on the 100th anniversary of the “Passamaquoddy Project’s” conception (1920-2020), Moondoggle—the only book on the project—explores what almost was, and what could be.

Book Time and Tide in Acadia Seasons on Mount Desert Island

Download or read book Time and Tide in Acadia Seasons on Mount Desert Island written by Christopher Camuto and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Camuto delivers insights on Mount Desert Island, a place of stunning beauty and natural wonders. Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park have been described as the climax of the coast of Maine. Millions are drawn every year to the stunning beauty of this rocky landscape of spruce-fir forest and granite islands. Some, like nature writer Christopher Camuto, never stop coming back. In Time and Tide in Acadia the author draws on years of walking Mount Desert’s summits and shorelines, canoeing its marshes, kayaking its tidal waters, and visiting its outer islands. To this task Camuto brings an appetite for observing wildlife and landscape with considerable originality, a regard for history and indigenous perceptions of nature, a keen interest in exploring the psychological and philosophical appeal of nature, and a writer’s love of language. As in his previous, highly praised books, Camuto fulfills his promise to give the reader innumerable vantages on the nature of a remarkable place that it takes time to get to know.

Book Observations and Modeling of the Internal Tide in a Submarine Canyon

Download or read book Observations and Modeling of the Internal Tide in a Submarine Canyon written by Emil T. Petruncio and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipboard ADCP and CTD measurements were conducted in Monterey Submarine Canyon in April and October 1994 to determine the propagation characteristics and energy levels of the semidiurnal internal tide. The measurements reveal a bottom intensified internal tide propagating energy up canyon. The region of strongest motion is in a beam 150-200 m thick, centered approximately 150 m above the Canyon floor. Along canyon baroclinic M2 currents are typically 15-20 cm/s, an order of magnitude larger than the estimated barotropic tidal currents. In April 1994, the internal tidal beam is well described by a progressive wave, while in October 1994, the signal is standing along and perpendicular to the beam. The Princeton Ocean Model was used to study the generation and propagation of semidiurnal internal tides in submarine canyons and to investigate their sensitivity to canyon shape.

Book Numerical Models of Oceans and Oceanic Processes

Download or read book Numerical Models of Oceans and Oceanic Processes written by Lakshmi H. Kantha and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-08-08 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceans play a pivotal role in our weather and climate. Ocean-borne commerce is vital to our increasingly close-knit global community. Yet we do not fully understand the intricate details of how they function, how they interact with the atmosphere, and what the limits are to their biological productivity and their tolerance to wastes. While satellites are helping us to fill in the gaps, numerical ocean models are playing an important role in increasing our ability to comprehend oceanic processes, monitor the current state of the oceans, and to a limited extent, even predict their future state.Numerical Models of Oceans and Oceanic Processes is a survey of the current state of knowledge in this field. It brings together a discussion of salient oceanic dynamics and processes, numerical solution methods, and ocean models to provide a comprehensive treatment of the topic. Starting with elementary concepts in ocean dynamics, it deals with equatorial, mid-latitude, high latitude, and coastal dynamics from the perspective of a modeler. A comprehensive and up-to-date chapter on tides is also included. This is followed by a discussion of different kinds of numerical ocean models and the pre- and post-processing requirements and techniques. Air-sea and ice-ocean coupled models are described, as well as data assimilation and nowcast/forecasts. Comprehensive appendices on wavelet transforms and empirical orthogonal functions are also included. This comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the field should be of interest to oceanographers, atmospheric scientists, and climatologists. While some prior knowledge of oceans and numerical modeling is helpful, the book includes an overview of enough elementary material so that along with its companion volume, Small Scale Processes in Geophysical Flows, it should be useful to both students new to the field and practicing professionals. * Comprehensive and up-to-date review* Useful for a two-semester (or one-semester on selected topics) graduate level course* Valuable reference on the topic* Essential for a better understanding of weather and climate
