The data used in the measurement were collected during 2004-2005 with the D0 detector at the Tevatron Collider of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and correspond to 0.7 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. High energy hadron collisions usually produce collimated sprays of particles called jets. The energy of the jets is measured using a liquid Argon-Uranium calorimeter and the production angle is determined with the help of silicon microstrip and scintillating fiber trackers. The inclusive jet cross section in proton-antiproton collisions is measured as a function of jet transverse momentum p{sub T} in six bins of jet rapidity at the center-of-mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV. Book excerpt: The simultaneous production of two J/psi mesons has been significantly observed in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector. The two J/psi mesons are fully reconstructed in their decay to muons. The signal yield is extracted with an extended maximum likelihood fit based on four event variables. A method was developed to correct for detector acceptances and efficiencies based on the measured momenta of the J/psi and their decay muons to maintain the least model dependence possible. The measurement is performed in an acceptance region defined by the individual J/psi transverse momentum and rapidity. From the measured signal yield of 446 events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4:7 inverse femtobarn. The total cross section is found to be 1:49 nanobarn, with 0:07 statistical and 0:13 nb systematic error, and unpolarizaed production was assumed. Most predictions for particle production at the LHC assume dominance of single parton interaction for proton-proton collisions, which can be tested with the final state measured in this analysis. The differential cross section is measured in bins of the double J/psi invariant mass, the double J/psi transverse momentum, and the absolute difference in rapidity of the two J/psi. The reconstruction of the four charged muon trajectories heavily relies on the Pixel subdetector located close to the beampipe. Systematic studies with cosmic muons and tracks from collision events are presented. The development of the Pixel RawToDigi package, data quality monitoring packages, commissioning studies of Pixel data and tracks in first collisions, and realistic simulations of decay signals in the pixel subdetector were all performed as a part of this dissertation work.

Book excerpt: The cross section for the prompt production of [J/Psi] meson pairs in proton-proton collisions at √ s[sqrt(s)] = 8 TeV at the LHC from a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2±0.5 fb−1 [inverse femtobarns] has been measured with the CMS detector. It provides unique insight into particle production and proton structure in proton-proton (pp) collisions. The two [J/Psi] mesons are fully reconstructed in their [mu+ mu-] decay. An acceptance region is defined by the individual [J/Psi] transverse momentum p [J/Psi pT] and rapidity y [J/Psi Rapidity]. The total fiducial cross section assuming unpolarized prompt [J/Psi] pair production is found to be [sigma_fid] = 195.7 ± 11.1 (stat) ± 22.1 (syst) ± 5.1 (lumi) ± 2.3 (BF) pb. The differential cross sections for prompt [J/Psi] pair production within this acceptance region are measured in eight event variables. Most predictions for particle production in pp collisions at the LHC assume dominance of single parton (gluon, quark) interactions (SPS) at the leading order perturbation theory. This assumption is tested with the final state measured in this analysis. Significant contributions from next-to-leading order processes and double parton scattering (DPS) are observed. In addition, the single [J/Psi] production cross section is estimated from theory and measured with pp collision data. Single [J/Psi] production is compared to the pair production via DPS and quantified via an effective cross section. This quantity is further compared to several particle pair production processes. In particular, the [J/Psi] pair production probes the contributions of gluons. All particle production measurements with CMS depend on the precise knowledge of the LHC luminosity. A detector, the Pixel Luminosity Telescope, based on solid state technology is used to count charged particle tracks from pp collisions, a measure of the instantaneous luminosity. The measurement is provided online for every crossing of the LHC beams. Tests of sensors and the development work for the detector are presented.

We have measured the inclusive[ital J]/[psi] production cross section as a function of the[ital J]/[psi] transverse momentum, [ital P][sub T][sup[ital J]/[psi]] in the central and forward rapidity regions. The new measurement of the cross section[ital d[sigma]/dp][sub T][sup[ital J]/[psi]] for[vert-bar][eta][sup[ital J]/[psi]][vert-bar][lt] 0.6 is in a good agreement with the CDF and earlier D[null] results. The cross section measurement[ital d[sigma]/dp][sub T][sup[ital J]/[psi]] for 2.5[lt][vert-bar][eta][sup[ital J]/[psi]][vert-bar][lt] 3.7 covers the[ital p][sub T][sup[ital J]/[psi]] range from 1 to 16 GeV/c. We combine the measurements in several[vert-bar][eta][sup[ital J]/[psi]][vert-bar] regions to discuss[ital d[sigma]/d[eta]][sup[ital J]/[psi]] for[ital p][sub T][sup[ital J]/[psi]][gt] 8 GeV/c. The data are compared with the next-to- leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, which take into account different[ital J]/[psi] production mechanisms.

Book excerpt: I present a measurement of the tt¯ production cross section at s = 1.96 TeV using 2034 pb-1 of CDF Run II data using events with a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. The measurement assumes a t → Wb branching fraction of 100 percent. Events consistent with tt¯ decay are found by identifying jets containing heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The dominant backgrounds are evaluated directly from the data. Based on 248 candidate events and an expected background of 86.8+/-5.6 events, I measure a production cross section of 8.7+/-1.1+0.9-0.8+/-0.6 pb, in agreement with the Standard Model.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents an analysis of the polarization of ' J'/ y mesons produced in 'pp¢' collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The collisions were produced by the Fermilab Tevatron collider, the world's highest energy particle accelerator. The data were recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run 1 of the Tevatron in 1992-1995. The 'J'/ y meson consists of a charm quark and its antiquark, and is the best-known type of quarkonium, the bound state of a heavy quark-antiquark pair. The measurement of the production polarization of 'J'/ y mesons and other quarkonia provides a test of quarkonium production models. The study of quarkonium production is important for understanding the strong nuclear force between quarks. The strong force is one of the four known fundamental forces, being responsible for binding quarks into hadrons and holding atomic nuclei together. The polarization of centrally produced 'J'/ y mesons has been measured over the transverse momentum range 4-20 GeV/'c', using an analysis of the angular distribution of their decays to [mu]+[mu]-. Decay length measurements made by CDF's silicon vertex detector allowed the promptly produced ' J'/ y mesons to be separated from those produced in ' B'-hadron decays. The prompt and 'B'-decay polarization parameters, Ã'P' and Ã' B', have both been measured. The measured value of Ã' P' is positive at intermediate 'PT', but is consistent with zero above 12 GeV/'c', in apparent disagreement with predictions of the NRQCD factorization formalism.
