Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

Book excerpt: School Construction Strategies for Universal Primary Education in Africa' examines the scope of the infrastructure challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa and the constraints to scaling up at an affordable cost. Download or read book Early Care and Education for Children in Poverty written by W. Steven Barnett and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-03-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barnett and Boocock present a multi-disciplinary assessment of the long-term outcomes of early care and education in the United States and abroad. Innovative new research, together with up-to-date, comprehensive reviews, provide lessons for the design of early childhood programs, policies, and research. Contributors from the fields of education, psychology, sociology, and economics address questions about the causal relationships through which early childhood programs produce their long-term effects, the characteristics of effective early childhood programs, how nations respond to the global social and economic trends that are changing the lives of children and their families everywhere, child care's effects on maternal labor force participation, the potential and perils of welfare reform, and the implications of national economic and political structures for early care and education policies. A unique feature of the book is its attention to the practical problems of conducting research to support public policy development, translating research results into public policy, and improving communication between researchers and policy makers. The research presented in this important volume clearly establishes that early care and education can permanently improve the lives of children in poverty, provides research-based recommendations for achieving that goal through public policy, and sets an agenda for future research on early care and education's long-term outcomes.
Download or read book Education et handicap written by Denis POIZAT and published by Eres. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Download or read book Moderate Learning Difficulties and the Future of Inclusion written by Narcie Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children with mild to moderate learning difficulties (MLD) make up the largest sub-group of children requiring special educational needs, and yet they are often neglected in terms of research and in their influence on future Government policies. This book, based on a Nuffield Foundation research project, considers the perspectives of children with moderate learning difficulties, reviewing relevant issues such as: * identification of children with MLD; * appropriate curriculum and pedagogy; * inclusion in mainstream schools; * their identity and self-perception. The authors weave their findings into a wider review of current research in the MLD field and use a range of perspectives, from the professional, to psychological and sociological. This is a contemporary look at MLD that discusses the historical and policy context , origins and justification for having a category for MLD. Students, researchers, and academics that are active in the field of inclusive education will find this an insightful and comprehensive text.
Download or read book The Myth of the Muslim Tide written by Doug Saunders and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even among people who would never subscribe to its more dramatic claims, the "Eurabia" movement has popularized a set of seemingly common-sense assumptions about Muslim immigrants to the West: that they are disloyal, that they have a political agenda driven by their faith, that their nhigh reproduction rates will soon make them a majority. These beliefs are poisoning politics and community relations in Europe and North America--and have led to mass murder in Norway. Rarely challenged, these claims have even slipped into the margins of mainstream politics. Doug Saunders believes it's time to debunk the myth that immigrants from Muslim countries are wildly different and pose a threat to the West. Drawing on voluminous demographic, statistical, scholarly and historical documentation, Saunders examines the real lives and circumstances of Muslim immigrants in the West: their politics, their beliefs, their observances and their degrees of assimilation. In the process he shatters the core claims that have built a murderous ideology and draws haunting historical parallels showing how the same myths stuck to earlier groups, such as Jews and Roman Catholics. His work will become a vital handbook in the culture wars that threaten to dominate North American and European elections and media discussions in 2012 and afterwards, and will provoke considerable debate over the actual nature of our polyglot societies.
