Book excerpt: As a radical alternative to the cultural reality of social exclusion of the Homo patiens, inclusion is an anthropological paradigm of the philosophy of law which leads to the idea of humans going beyond social structures of centre and periphery in society. As a model of thought, inclusion is driven by the United Nations and also by the catalogue of basic social rights involved in the treaties of the European Union. We cannot understand inclusion in the same way as switching on and off a light. Beyond legal frameworks and economic incentives as important preconditions for generating social change through Pareto-optimal solutions in allocation, successful inclusion is a process of social change understood as a type of cultural transformation. As a form of metamorphosis (gestalt switch) of the collective agreement about the question of a good life, inclusion needs time, but during this time-span society has to organize social learning processes that transform the psychodynamics of individuals and the cultural grammar of exclusion.

Book excerpt: Over a third of the current 7.3 billion people worldwide are burdened with poor sanitation services. The resulting social, relational and ecological exclusion make the realisation of the human right to sanitation (HRS) a critical concern development concern. However, the literature has evolved in a largely compartmentalised manner, focusing on the formal recognition of the HRS in domestic legal systems, without sufficiently addressing the drivers of poor sanitation services. This research expounds on the impact of the HRS on human wellbeing and the environment within the context of a developing country like Nigeria as a case study. The findings show that contrary to the focus in the literature, the drivers of poor sanitation services are not confined to legal factors, such as the formal recognition of the HRS within domestic legal systems. Rather, the drivers include social, economic and environmental limitations to improved sanitation services. Based on the findings, the book argues that the focus in the literature on the formal recognition of the HRS in national legal systems is insufficient for tackling the main drivers of poor sanitation services. It is therefore necessary to reformulate the HRS discourse using complementary governance instruments that advance social, relational and ecological inclusion.

On the other hand, through this investigation of civil society networks we will contribute to debate on the EU’s role as promoter of greater regional co-operation. The rationale for this collection is thus defined by changing political relationships between the 27-member European Union and countries in its immediate vicinity. These transformations include the ongoing but by no means straightforward process of Turkey’s EU membership, an evolving (and complex) partnership with Russia and the development of deeper political, economic and social relationships with many other neighbouring countries. More specifically, the work presented here involves comparative studies of how the EU is perceived by civil society actors both within and outside the EU. We ask whether the EU’s promotion of cross-border co-operation (e.g. though the European Neighbourhood Policy) is empowering civil society within member states and in neighbouring countries such as Russia, Moldova, Turkey and Morocco.
