Book excerpt: Du fait de leur complexité et variabilité, les systèmes naturels ne peuvent être décrits et étudiés dans leur globalité ; on a alors recours à la modélisation pour analyser et prévoir leur dynamique. Dans le domaine des hydrosystèmes, les théories actuellement disponibles ne peuvent tenir compte de tous les processus en jeu et de leurs interactions, notamment à cause de la grande hétérogénéité spatio-temporelle qui existe et de la difficulté à instrumenter l'ensemble des échelles hydrologiques. Tout ceci se traduit par de nombreuses incertitudes : sur les données qui alimentent les modèles, d'abord, sur leur structure et les valeurs des paramètres, ensuite. Cela nous questionne sur la fiabilité et la crédibilité de nos simulations. Ainsi, l'objectif principal de cette thèse était de comprendre si, et de quelle manière, nous pouvons quantifier globalement et rationnellement les différentes incertitudes qui affectent une modélisation, afin de les traduire en incertitudes sur les résultats attendus. Après un diagnostic des méthodes existantes pour la prise en compte des différentes sources d'incertitude (notamment, la méthode GLUE), nous avons proposé une démarche nous permettant (i) d'identifier toutes les combinaisons de paramètres ambiguës à une combinaison de référence (i.e. ayant toutes une probabilité d'être représentatives du système réel en étude) ; (ii) de proposer des intervalles prédictifs sur les variables de sortie du modèle ; (iii) d'évaluer le gain informatif apporté par de données supplémentaires et/ou une modification de la structure du modèle utilisé. L'application a été menée sur le bassin versant de Vogüé (Ardèche), représenté grâce à une version simplifiée du modèle pluie-débit TOPMODEL. Une analyse de sensibilité des simulations aux différentes sources d'incertitude a été effectuée, puis une comparaison entre les intervalles prédictifs proposés par notre nouvelle méthodologie d'évaluation de l'ambiguïté et la méthodologie GLUE a été proposée.

Their structural quality and functional efficiency are key parameters to guarantee the transfer of domestic and industrial wastewater to treatment plants without infiltration nor exfiltration. Infiltration of groundwater is particularly detrimental to treatment plant efficiency, while exfiltration of wastewater can lead to groundwater contamination. The European research project APUSS (Assessing infiltration and exfiltration on the Performance of Urban Sewer Systems) was devoted to sewer infiltration and exfiltration questions. It was structured in three main Work Areas dealing respectively with i) the development of new measurement methods based on tracer experiments and accounting for detailed uncertainty analyses, ii) the implementation of models and software tools to integrate structural and experimental data and to facilitate data display, operational management and decision-making processes and iii) the integration of economic and operational questions by means of cost estimation, economic evaluation, performance indicators and multi-criteria methods applied to investment/rehabilitation strategies. This final report describes the objectives, methods and main results for each Work Area. References to detailed methods, protocols, reports and tools are given in this final report which will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with the performance of urban sewer systems.
