Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incense Cedar The yield Of various grades of lumber from an incense cedar tree depends very largely, Of course, on the amount Of dry-rot. This varies SO widely, however, in different trees in one locality as well as in trees in different localities that data based on the yields Of pecky trees would have very little general application. The yields indicated in Table 4 are based therefore on sound trees and are fairly typical Of the yield where there is no dry-rot. In the southern Cascades, soils developed from pumice also support excellent stands, especially on benches and gentle slopes where the soils are deep, coarse-textured and well-drained. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Incense-Cedar in Central California A sample of 130 incense-cedar (libocedrus decurrens Torr.) trees was selected from the Eldorado National Forest in California. The trees were felled and bucked into 403 woods-length logs and processed through a sawmill cutting Shop and Common grades of lumber. Recovery estimates are shown for woods-length logs based on Scribner board-foot scale and cubic-foot scale. Analysis showed that board-foot recovery ranged from 169 percent for 6-inch logs to 103 percent for 34-inch logs. Cubic-volume recovery of rough green lumber increased from 50 percent to 62 per cent for the same range of diameters. Yields of higher quality lumber (shops and Moulding) increased as log diameter increased. Percentage of Scribner scaled defect was found to be correlated with several measures of product recovery. Keywords: Lumber recovery, lumber value, incense-cedar, log scale, California. This report presents lumber-recovery data for 130 incense-cedar trees selected from the Sierra Nevada of central California. Over 400 woods-length logs were processed through a sawmill cutting Shop and Common grades of lumber. Diameter of the study logs ranged from 6 to 34 inches. The average defect was from-4 to 17 percent Scribner and 3 to 10 percent cubic scale. Lumber recovery is presented on the basis of both board feet and cubic feet. Several measures of product recovery were correlated with scaling diameter. Regres sion models were developed for the following variables. In addition to this mechanical aspect of the work, he has presented some information of educational character on red cedar as a wood, and something of interest concerning the development of the chest. As information of this character has been lacking in the past, he hopes that the book will meet with the approval of teachers who will use it in their work. In the analytical work, which followed the methods described by the former investigators, all samples except incense cedar and mesquite were run in duplicate. The results tabulated are the average of the two determinations. The data relative to redwood are not exactly comparable with the results obtained on the other species shown in Table 1, as the sapwood showed decay, and the heartwood only could be analyzed. Book Bark Characteristics and Fire Resistance

Download or read book Bark Characteristics and Fire Resistance written by Karl W. Spalt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bark Characteristics and Fire Resistance: A Literature Survey Most early workers restricted their attention to the subjective determination of fire resist ance; their comments on possible causes were generalizations. Lachmund (1921) subjectively ranked four western conifers in terms of their resistance to the formation of fire scars. He considered white fir to be the most resistant, followed in order by Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, and incense-cedar. He attributed the resistance of the first two species to their corky bark and low resin content; ponderosa bark is resinous, and incense-cedar is both resinous and fibrous. Book A Forest Fire Prevention Manual for the School Children of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Forest Fire Prevention Manual for the School Children of California Classic Reprint written by California Division of Forestry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Forest Fire Prevention Manual for the School Children of California As you leave the valley and start up toward the mountains, you first enter the foothill region of our State, which borders the great valley at elevations of from 1000 feet to 2500 feet above sea level, and there the oaks, of which we have some sixteen varieties, are the most impor tant trees. The trees in this belt are of use to us as fuel, but do not make good lumber because they are crooked and often rotten at the heart. As you continue to climb above the foothill zone, at an eleva tion of from 2500 to 7000 feet, you will find our good forests of pine and fir timber. The commercial timber trees of California - that is to say, the trees that are manufactured into lumber, belong to the conifer family, so called because they produce their fruit, or seeds, in a bone that is covered with tough, woody scales to protect the seeds. The most valuable timber trees, in order of importance, are the yellow pine, redwood, sugar pine, Douglas fir, white fir and incense cedar. Book The Spell of the Sensuous

Download or read book The Spell of the Sensuous written by David Abram and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the International Lannan Literary Award for Nonfiction Animal tracks, word magic, the speech of stones, the power of letters, and the taste of the wind all figure prominently in this intellectual tour de force that returns us to our senses and to the sensuous terrain that sustains us. This major work of ecological philosophy startles the senses out of habitual ways of perception. For a thousand generations, human beings viewed themselves as part of the wider community of nature, and they carried on active relationships not only with other people with other animals, plants, and natural objects (including mountains, rivers, winds, and weather patters) that we have only lately come to think of as "inanimate." How, then, did humans come to sever their ancient reciprocity with the natural world? What will it take for us to recover a sustaining relation with the breathing earth? In The Spell of the Sensuous David Abram draws on sources as diverse as the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Balinese shamanism, Apache storytelling, and his own experience as an accomplished sleight-of-hand of magician to reveal the subtle dependence of human cognition on the natural environment. He explores the character of perception and excavates the sensual foundations of language, which--even at its most abstract--echoes the calls and cries of the earth. On every page of this lyrical work, Abram weaves his arguments with a passion, a precision, and an intellectual daring that recall such writers as Loren Eisleley, Annie Dillard, and Barry Lopez.

Book Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World

Download or read book Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World written by Dominick A. DellaSala and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperate rainforests are biogeographically unique. Compared to their tropical counterparts, temperate rainforests are rarer and are found disproportionately along coastlines. Because most temperate rainforests are marked by the intersection of marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems, these rich ecotones are among the most productive regions on Earth. Globally, temperate rainforests store vast amounts of carbon, provide habitat for scores of rare and endemic species with ancient affinities, and sustain complex food-web dynamics. In spite of their global significance, however, protection levels for these ecosystems are far too low to sustain temperate rainforests under a rapidly changing global climate and ever expanding human footprint. Therefore, a global synthesis is needed to provide the latest ecological science and call attention to the conservation needs of temperate and boreal rainforests. A concerted effort to internationalize the plight of the world’s temperate and boreal rainforests is underway around the globe; this book offers an essential (and heretofore missing) tool for that effort. DellaSala and his contributors tell a compelling story of the importance of temperate and boreal rainforests that includes some surprises (e.g., South Africa, Iran, Turkey, Japan, Russia). This volume provides a comprehensive reference from which to build a collective vision of their future.
