Book excerpt: La investigación se centra en los pilares que sustentaron y consolidaron la educación formal de las personas sordas, hasta alcanzar el punto de inflexión que significó la ley Moyano al ordenar la enseñanza general, incluida la de los sordos y los ciegos, y encomendar al Colegio Nacional de Sordomudos y de Ciegos de Madrid la formación del profesorado especializado, marcando un hito en la historia de la educación especial española.Con el nombre de “Real Colegio de Sordo-mudos de Madrid”, creado en 1802 por Carlos IV, estuvo a cargo de la Real Sociedad Económica Matritense de los Amigos del País hasta que pasó a depender del ministerio de Fomento en 1852. Pero la apertura del colegio se retrasó durante tres años por problemas de financiación, la falta de preparación pedagógica de sus maestros lo llevó a la deriva educativa y, poco después, la Guerra de la Independencia aceleró su decadencia. De nada había servido que España hubiera sido la cuna de la sordomudística en el siglo XVI, con Pedro Ponce de León; ni que, en el siglo siguiente, Juan Pablo Bonet hubiera publicado el primer tratado de esta especial educación, “Reducción de las letras y Arte para enseñar à ablar los mudos”; como el caso que se le hizo a Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro y su “Escuela española de Sordomudos” puesta a disposición de los interesados, unos años antes de su creación. El buen hacer de la Matritense contribuyó a la rápida reapertura del centro, en 1814, y lo puso bajo la dirección de un abogado que, con un firme planteamiento pedagógico, reorientó su rumbo. En la etapa absolutista, las excelentes relaciones del duque de Híjar contribuyeron a sanear la economía del centro. Por último, con la llegada de los liberales, el colegio, dirigido por su médico, con la inestimable y eficaz ayuda de un licenciado en arte y un claustro comprometido con la educación y la formación profesional de sus alumnos, se situó entre los mejores colegios de sordos de la época.La investigación persigue vislumbrar la línea educativa y rehabilitadora que surgía en su quehacer pedagógico, los resultados que iban configurando y reorientando el modelo educativo y todo lo relacionado con organización escolar y la práctica de la educación. Como contribuciones se destacan: el hallazgo del primer alfabeto manual que se usó en el colegio en 1805; la recuperación de los exámenes públicos de los sordomudos de 1806 y 1807; la cartilla de pronunciación de 1815, y sacar a la luz el manuscrito titulado Breve tratado de Doctrina Cristiana, con su correspondiente traducción en lengua de signos de las primeras décadas del siglo XIX, lo que permitirá, a las personas sordas, conocer por primera vez cómo se expresaban sus antepasados y, a los investigadores, el estudio de la lengua de signos española en sus fases más tempranas. Como pilares sobresalen la extraordinaria labor de filantropía realizada por la Real Sociedad Económica Matritense y la consolidación de la Escuela Española de Sordos como línea educativa, gracias al esfuerzo compartido del profesor D. Francisco Fernández Villabrille y la Academia de profesores del Colegio Nacional de Sordomudos de Madrid, dirigidos por D. Juan Manuel Ballesteros.

The study of social space in any human group is fraught with limitations, and to these we must add the further limits involved in the study of childhood. Here specialists from archaeology, history, literature, architecture, didactics, museology and anthropology build a body of theoretical and methodological approaches about how space is articulated and organized around children and how this disposition affects the creation and maintenance of social identities. Children are considered as the main actors in historic dynamics of social change, from prehistory to the present day. Notions on space, childhood and the construction of both the individual and the group identity of children are considered as a prelude to papers that focus on analyzing and identifying the spaces which contribute to the construction of children’s identity during their lives: the places they live, learn, socialize and play. A final section deals with these same aspects, but focuses on funerary contexts, in which children may lose their capacity to influence events, as it is adults who establish burial strategies and practices. In each case authors ask questions such as: how do adults construct spaces for children? How do children manage their own spaces?
