The purpose of this research was to increase the information available upon tissue depth data for children, primarily for use in forensic facial reconstruction. Facial tissue depths were measured at 21 anatomical points using ultrasonic echo-location. The mid-philtral, upper lip border and lower lip border points showed consistently larger tissue depths in the males than the females, and the zygomatic attachment showed consistently larger tissue depths in the females than the males. The males showed a general increase in tissue depth with an increase in age at all the mid-line facial points and the cheek points. The females showed increased tissue depth with age at all the points except the infra-orbital, lateral orbital, mid-zygomatic arch and mid-mandibular points. A table of mean tissue depths was developed for males and females divided into two-yearly age groups.

Book excerpt: This study reports results of a facial tissue depth measurements project conducted over a two-year period on a modern sample of children and adults of both sexes and varying ages and races. The purpose of this research was to increase available tissue depth data for children and update facial tissue depth measurements for American adults. Most volunteers for this project were patients or visitors to the pediatric clinic at the Louisiana State University Medical Center, School of Dentistry, in New Orleans, Using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, we scanned 551 children and 256 adults at 19 points across the face. Thirteen of the scanned points were traditional landmarks while six others were areas not measured by previous researchers or were points for which very little data exist for both children and adults. For this presentation, we analyzed data for 515 children and 197 adults. Results of Pearson's correlations, analysis of variance, and paired t-tests indicate that age, sex, and race are significant factors when considering tissue depth means for different measurement locations across the human face. These new standards are compared to the work of other researchers. Our results provide valuable assistance in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional facial reproductions and superimpositions.

New guidelines for facial feature properties such as nose projection, eye protrusion or mouth width, have been suggested, but also older theories and "rules of thumbs" have been critically evaluated based on digital technology. New fast, flexible and objective 3D reconstruction computer programs are in full development. The research on craniofacial reconstruction since the beginning of the 21st century is presented, highlighting computer-aided 3D facial reconstruction. Employing the newer technologies and permanently evaluating and (re)questioning the obtained results will hopefully lead to more accurate reconstructions.

Book excerpt: Forensic anthropologists use facial reconstruction to develop a likeness of an unknown individual in order to generate public interest that may lead to a positive identification. Tissue thicknesses of the face from living persons or cadavers are an essential part of the reconstruction method. The purpose of this study is to add to the growing database of tissue thicknesses along the facial midline of African-American children and to begin to examine the possibility of geographic differences between children of the same ancestral group. Results indicate that significant differences do not exist between males and females or between African-American females from the Midwest and Southeast U.S. Only age was determined to have a significant effect on mean tissue thickness variation, in our sample, with the majority of change occurring in the facial region.

There is need for an advanced text available for artists who wish to learn more about reading and understanding the skull to inform more accurate and detailed 2D craniofacial reconstruction work. Reading the Skull: Advanced 2D Reconstruction fills this need by providing instruction on how to identify basic features, as well as indicators and anomalies in bone structures, to help in illustrating more specific and unique details in facial structure and features. Since artists are most frequently visual learners, the book presents comparative photos of skulls with life photos to help better identify and decipher distinguishing facial characteristics. Because many forensic artists perform few reconstructions each year— and have very little exposure to skulls— the author has written this text to show examples of distinct elements in the skull for artists to see, compare, and learn. In doing so, it provides those who do not regularly work with skulls more exposure to them and allows readers the ability to apply such information and better extrapolate features for the purpose of more accurately rendering an individual’s unique facial features. When examining the skull closely, each feature can be more detailed based on what the bone is indicating, and the work can be more accurate to that specific skull. Characteristics such as the ears, facial harmony and symmetry, shape of eye and brow, nose and mouth, the aging process, sex and ancestral background— among others— are all singular to that skull and adds to the gestalt of that face to make it more identifiable as an individual. Reading the Skull is a ground- breaking collection of the author’s personal study and research, other published works from the literature on facial features, as well as numerous examples from donors to forensic anthropology centers in the US. Work presented draws upon new information from anthropologists and others in related fields and disciplines who continue to study facial features based on the skull. As such, it provides a fresh perspective, summarizing several studies and work together in a single book. Natalie Murry is a freelance forensic artist currently based in Austin, Texas. She began her forensic art career while working as a police officer in Kent Washington. She does reconstructions and postmortem drawings for the King County Medical Examiner’s Office in Seattle Washington, and the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office in Everett Washington. She has taught forensic artists to draw digitally at workshops at police departments from Washington to New Jersey as well as at Scottsdale Artists School and at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University. Natalie is on the forensic art subcommittee for the International Association for Identification, and is an IAI certified forensic artist. She has had two articles published in the Journal of Forensic Identification: in September/ October 2015 entitled “Rotating the Anterior View of a Skull into the Frankfort Horizontal Plane for Postmortem Drawings” and in April/ June 2021 entitled “Skull to Photo Comparison for Identification Purposes.” She has been a beta tester for Corel Painter since the 2016 build. Book excerpt: Positive identification can be problematic if fingerprinting, DNA, dental history, etc. are no longer available. This may be possible through techniques such as facial approximation, but any form of craniofacial identification requires intimate knowledge of human craniofacial anatomy. Where children are involved, craniofacial changes due to facial growth further complicate matters and require knowledge of tissue thickness and variation in facial shapes. These have hardly been studied in children of African descent. The aims of this study were to provide data on tissue thickness and craniofacial proportions of South African Black and Coloured children and to document the lateral profile shape changes between the ages of 6 and 13 years. Tissue thickness was measured using cephalograms of South African children (n = 388). After digitizing the images, tissue thickness measurements were taken at 11 mid-facial landmarks from each image using the iTEM measuring program. Craniofacial proportions were assessed through assessing standardized anterior and lateral facial photographs of 1749 children. Measurements of facial features were taken using iTEM, from which 28 standard facial indices were calculated. For both tissue thickness and craniofacial indices comparisons between groups per age, sex and ancestry were statistically analyzed. In addition, geometric morphometrics were used to describe lateral facial shape changes and differences age, sex and ancestry (n = 800). The results showed that tissue thickness differences at lower face landmarks are more pronounced in age groups per ancestry as opposed to differences per age and sex. Facial profile per facial shape, class and ancestry showed differences at all landmarks. Craniofacial indices indicated that Coloured children have wider heads, foreheads and faces compared to Black children. The height of the nose and lower lip is longer in Coloured children compared to Black children. In Coloured children, mandibular height and lower face height is shorter in relation to total face height. Males have wider heads, foreheads, mandibles and faces compared to females. The degree of prognathism is dictated by ancestry and to a lesser extent by age and sex as findings showed that maxillary prognathism was more prominent in Black children, while mandibular prognathism were more pronounced in male children. South Africans have a relative concave lateral facial profile due to the maxilla and mandible being more prognathic than in North American children. Differences in lateral face shape between children of various ages, sexes and ancestral groups were visualized through the relative displacement of landmarks related to the forehead and lower face. The resultant differences in lateral facial profile can assist in more accurate estimation of age and ancestry of unknown children. This research created reference datasets for tissue thickness and craniofacial indices of South African children of Black and Coloured ancestry per age and sex that will be useful in the diagnosis of facial dysmorphology and for facial reconstruction / approximation of juvenile remains. It also shed more light on facial growth patterns in the various groups.
