Pulpectomy is a conservative treatment option to salvage infected primary teeth. However, primary teeth with their bizarre root canals that undergo continued secondary dentin deposition and physiological root resorption combined with pathological changes present a significant endodontic challenge especially during obturation. The obturation technique used should ensure a hermetic seal and at the same time prevent extrusion of the obturation material which would be detrimental to the successor teeth. This book discusses various obturation techniques for primary teeth root canals and summarize the evidence . It was found that various factors like obturation material used, location of teeth in the oral cavity, canal anatomy, handling characteristics, cost and treatment time play an important role in the clinician’s choice of obturation technique. Therefore, there is no single technique that can be recommended as ‘ideal’ for obturation.

Book excerpt: O propósito deste estudo in vitro foi avaliar a qualidade de obturações endodônticas em relação ao selamento apical e marginal, comparando duas técnicas de obturação: Condensação Lateral (CL) e Condensação Vertical (CV) daguta-percha aquecida. Foram utilizadas 40 amostras que foram submetidas à penetração passiva de solução de nitrato de prata a 50% e divididas em dois grupos. Para cada grupo de amostras infiltradas foi utilizada uma metodologiadiferente. O grupo 1, com cada metade das amostras obturadas com um tipo de técnica de obturação, foi preparado para microscopia Óptica (MO), processamento digital de imagens (PDI) e espectrometria de absorção atômica (EAA). O grupo 2, com metade das amostras obturadas por cada uma das técnicas, foi preparado para microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Através da MO e PDI, as amostras foram avaliadas quanto à qualidade das obturações, quantificando o percentual de guta-percha e cimento presentes. Através da utilização da EAA, a massa de prata infiltrada na obturação foi quantificada e finalmente, com o uso da MEV, a adaptação marginal dos materiais obturadoresàs paredes do canal radicular foi avaliada. Nas condições experimentais em que este trabalho foi conduzido e através da análise estatística, concluiu-se que houve diferença estatisticamente significante em relação ao selamento apical produzido pelas duas técnicas de obturação avaliadas e quanto à qualidade de preenchimento das obturações. Nas observações ao MEV, a CV mostrou uma melhor adaptaçãodo material obturador às paredes dentinárias quando comparada com a CL em algumas regiões do canal radicular.

Book excerpt: Introduction:The aim of this study is to determine whether the insertion rate of the Dentsply/Sirona Guttacore obturation product with Dentsply AH Plus sealer has an effect on 1. the extrusion amount of the obturating materials and 2. the extrusion probability of the obturating materials out of root canal apex. Methods:Thirty root canal simulating plastic blocks were prepared with Waveone Gold nickel titanium rotary files to a size "primary" file. The prepared blocks were divided into three groups: group 1 was obturated using GuttaCore size primary obturator (analogous to the reciprocating file size) at a rate of 1 seconds; group 2 was obturated at a rate of 7 seconds; and group 3 was obturated at a rate of 16 seconds. The results were statistically analyzed by evaluating the amount and the probability of the obturating material extrusion. Results:The average amount of the extruded obturation material was .44 mg (Group 1), .22 mg (Group 2) and .17 mg (Group 3). The probability of the obturation material extrusion was 60% (group 1), 30% (Group 2) and 22% (Group 3). There are no statistical differences for the amount of extruded obturation materials among the three groups (P>0.05). There are also no statistical differences for the probability of the obturation material extrusion among the three groups (P>0.05). Conclusion:This study suggests that the insertion rates of the Guttacore obturator have no effect on the extrusion of theobturation materials.
