Book excerpt: When Marshall VanDahmm’s wife, Violet, married four times previously, informs him that she’s divorcing him, he promptly falls apart. She refuses to offer a reason for the divorce, and Marshall is utterly confused. Out of anger and desperation, he decides to seek out one of Violet’s exes, Costa Pavlos, with whom he’s convinced she’s been having an affair. Despite a rocky introduction, Marshall and Costa form a tentative friendship, and together they seek out Violet’s other exes. It seems Marshall isn’t the only one Violet left on ambiguous terms. Now Marshall and Costa, with Owen, Brian and Tim have formed a renegade “support group” to work through the emotional, mental, and financial damage she’s left in her wake. Enter Jake: Violet’s high school sweetheart and the one who got away. The men are befuddled by Violet’s pining over Jake—what does he have that they don’t? And then, inexplicably altruistically, can they track him down in time to save him from Violet? The group sets out on a road trip to find Jake before Violet can, and on the way forge new friendships, new loyalties, and find new sides of themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and trenchant work, Christina Sharpe interrogates literary, visual, cinematic, and quotidian representations of Black life that comprise what she calls the "orthography of the wake." Activating multiple registers of "wake"—the path behind a ship, keeping watch with the dead, coming to consciousness—Sharpe illustrates how Black lives are swept up and animated by the afterlives of slavery, and she delineates what survives despite such insistent violence and negation. Initiating and describing a theory and method of reading the metaphors and materiality of "the wake," "the ship," "the hold," and "the weather," Sharpe shows how the sign of the slave ship marks and haunts contemporary Black life in the diaspora and how the specter of the hold produces conditions of containment, regulation, and punishment, but also something in excess of them. In the weather, Sharpe situates anti-Blackness and white supremacy as the total climate that produces premature Black death as normative. Formulating the wake and "wake work" as sites of artistic production, resistance, consciousness, and possibility for living in diaspora, In the Wake offers a way forward.

She educates herself about newfangled technologies and tries to keep her mind focussed on defeating the threat to the delicate balance, but imagine her surprise when after centuries of lonely existence, in which love has never so much as crossed her mind, she falls head over heels. And who is her lover? The enemy Violet and her friends are here to defeat. Can Violet keep her head, or will she be hypnotised by evil? Will her friends stand by her, knowing that she is infatuated with the enemy? Will Violet's emotions mean the end for us all?

Book Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer

Download or read book Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer written by Geoffrey Chaucer and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to overstate the importance of English poet GEOFFREY CHAUCER (c. 1343 c. 1400) to the development of literature in the English language. His writings which were popular during his own lifetime with the nobility as well as with the increasingly literate merchant class marked the first celebration of the English vernacular as a tongue worthy of literary endeavor, most notably in his unfinished narrative poem The Canterbury Tales, the format and structure of which continues to be imitated by writers today. But the impact of Chaucer s work was felt even into the 16th and 17th centuries, when the first major collections of his writings set a high standard for how authors should be presented to the reading public. This widely esteemed seven-volume set first published in the 1890s by British academic WALTER WILLIAM SKEAT (1835 1912), Erlington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University is based solely on Chaucer s original manuscripts and the earliest available published works (with any significant variations or deviations between versions highlighted in the extensive notes), and comes complete with Skeat s informative commentary on many passages. Volume VII features works generally appended to collections of Chaucer s work, and sometimes attributed to him, including: Thomas Usk: The Testament of Love The Plowmans Tale Jack Upland John Gower: The Praise of Peace Thomas Hoccleve: The Letter of Cupid John Lydgate: The Complaint of the Black Knight Sir Richard Ros: A Balade: Warning Men to Beware of Deceitful Women and more.

Book Modernism in Wonderland

Download or read book Modernism in Wonderland written by John D. Morgenstern and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retracing the steps of a surprising array of 20th-century writers who ventured into the fantastical, topsy-turvy world of Lewis Carroll's fictions, this book demonstrates the full extent of Carroll's legacy in literary modernism. Testing the authority of language and mediation through extensive word-play and genre-bending, the Alice books undoubtedly prefigure literary modernism at its upmost experimental. The collection's chapters look beyond literary style to show how Carroll's writings had a far-reaching impact on modern life, from commercial culture to politics and philosophy. This book shows us the Alice we recognize from Carroll's novels but also the Alice modernist writers encountered through the looking-glass of these extraliterary discourses. Recovering a common touchstone between the likes of T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, W. H. Auden, and writers conventionally regarded on the periphery of modernist studies, such as Dorothy L. Sayers, Sylvia Plath, Jorge Luis Borges, Flann O'Brien, and Vladimir Nabokov, this volume ultimately provides a new entry-point into a more broadly conceptualised global modernism.
