Download or read book Social Media in Trinidad written by Jolynna Sinanan and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on 15 months of ethnographic research in one of the most under-developed regions in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, this book describes the uses and consequences of social media for its residents. Jolynna Sinanan argues that this semi-urban town is a place in-between: somewhere city dwellers look down on and villagers look up to. The complex identity of the town is expressed through uses of social media, with significant results for understanding social media more generally. Not elevating oneself above others is one of the core values of the town, and social media becomes a tool for social visibility; that is, the process of how social norms come to be and how they are negotiated. Carnival logic and high-impact visuality is pervasive in uses of social media, even if Carnival is not embraced by all Trinidadians in the town and results in presenting oneself and association with different groups in varying ways. The study also has surprising results in how residents are explicitly non-activist and align themselves with everyday values of maintaining good relationships in a small town, rather than espousing more worldly or cosmopolitan values.

Download or read book From Indians in Trinidad to Indo Trinidadians written by N. Jayaram and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics of the socio-cultural baggage that Indian indentured migrants took with them to the Caribbean island of Trinidad and how they have since become a vibrant diaspora community, namely the Indo-Trinidadians. It combines social history with first-hand fieldwork data to portray human ingenuity in terms of social reconstitution and community building in a hostile socio-cultural environment. Furthermore, it addresses key social institutions—religion, caste, and family—and cultural elements—language, foodways, and ethnicity. Its analytical framework is guided by the concept of metamorphosis; it steers clear of the persistence versus change hypotheses. Given its focus, it will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, social anthropology, history, and migration and diaspora studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 250 years speculation has swirled as to the true murderer of Colin Campbell, and whether James Stewart, hanged as an accessory, really was part of a conspiracy that might have ignited rebellion in Scotland. The rivalry between the Campbell and Stewart clans was connected to the political and religious fires that had already engulfed Britain the fourth Jacobite rebellion had been extinguished with the blood of thousands of Highlanders only six years before the two bullets pierced Colin's back in 1752 and one newspaper said the "ancient animosity" between the clans was likely to resume because of the crime. But that prediction was wrong, and the public display of James's body until the bones blew down was just the most gruesome of policies and events that quelled and finally transformed Scotland. The "Appin murder" figures in the novels of Robert Louis Stevenson and elsewhere is rendered as bad history, propaganda, and myth. Dr. Holcombe's definitive volume a 20-year project drawing on nearly 500 sources illuminates tales of buried treasure, shooting matches, spies, treachery and exile, but more importantly solves the murder and tells the story of one society in its death throes and another

Download or read book Sports Law in Trinidad and Tobago written by J. Tyrone Marcus and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in Trinidad and Tobago deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Trinidad and Tobago will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.
Download or read book The Regulation of Religion and the Making of Hinduism in Colonial Trinidad written by Alexander Rocklin and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can religious freedom be granted to people who do not have a religion? While Indian indentured workers in colonial Trinidad practiced cherished rituals, "Hinduism" was not a widespread category in India at the time. On this Caribbean island, people of South Asian descent and African descent came together--under the watchful eyes of the British rulers--to walk on hot coals for fierce goddesses, summon spirits of the dead, or honor Muslim martyrs, practices that challenged colonial norms for religion and race. Drawing deeply on colonial archives, Alexander Rocklin examines the role of the category of religion in the regulation of the lives of Indian laborers struggling for autonomy. Gradually, Indians learned to narrate the origins, similarities, and differences among their fellows' cosmological views, and to define Hindus, Muslims, and Christians as distinct groups. Their goal in doing this work of subaltern comparative religion, as Rocklin puts it, was to avoid criminalization and to have their rituals authorized as legitimate religion--they wanted nothing less than to gain access to the British promise of religious freedom. With the indenture system's end, the culmination of this politics of recognition was the gradual transformation of Hindus' rituals and the reorganization of their lives--they fabricated a "world religion" called Hinduism.
Download or read book Jihad in Trinidad and Tobago July 27 1990 written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 27, 1990 a miltant Islamic organization launched an attempted coup d' etat premised upon a hostage situation to remove a democratically elected government from power in Trinidad and Tobago West Indies. This work focuses on the central issue of a Muslim minority in the West and its varied attempts to interact with a non-Muslim society on a daily basis. The work would present the ravages of black on black racism upon the Muslim communities of Trinidad and Tobago resulting in a divided community on the basis of race. Secondly, the work examines the influence of various discourses on the Muslim community of Trinidad and Tobago, especially the return to Islam by the Afro-Trinidadians and the development of a militant Islamic discourse which insisted that liberation for especially Afro-Trinidadians and Tobagonians was only found within the ambit of Islam. Finally, the work examines the impact of the illicit drug trade upon the relations between the then government and the Jamaat al Muslimmeen given the Muslimeen's assault upon the illicit drug trade in Trinidad immediately preceding July 27, 1990.

Download or read book Evaluating Cure Violence in Trinidad and Tobago written by Edward R. Maguire and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a comprehensive evaluation of the Cure Violence initiative implemented in Trinidad and Tobago from July 2015 to August 2017. It describes the evaluation’s methods and findings and includes three main components: a process evaluation, impact evaluation, and cost-effectiveness analysis. The process evaluation revealed that local staff successfully implemented some of the key elements of the Cure Violence model in a number of distressed and violent communities in the Port of Spain area. The impact evaluation, based on a series of quasi-experimental designs using multiple independent data sets, found significant and substantial reductions in violence, calls to the police for violent incidents, and gunshot wound admissions in a hospital located near the intervention. Based on these analyses, the report concludes that Project REASON reduced violence in the treatment area. Findings from the cost-effectiveness evaluation showed that Cure Violence cost, on average, approximately US$3,500 to US$4,500 for every violent incident it prevented. Given the profound costs of violence in both human and economic terms, these estimates provide hope not only that violence can be prevented, but also that effective solutions for preventing violence may be affordable
