Book In the Village of Viger Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the Village of Viger Classic Reprint written by Duncan Campbell Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Village of Viger City came and put up the oddest wooden house that one could imagine. It was perfectly square there was a window and a door in front, a win dow at the side, and a window upstairs. There were many surmises as to the probable occupant of such a diminutive habitation and the widow Laroque, who made dresses and trimmed hats, and whose shop was directly opposite, and next door to the Post Oflice, suffered greatly from unsatisfied curiosity. No one who looked like the proprietor was ever seen near the place. The foreman of the laborers who were working at the house seemed to know nothing all that he said, in answer to questions, was: I have my orders. At last the house was ready; it was painted within and without, and Madame Laroque could scarcely believe her eyes when, one morning, a man came from the City with a small Sign under his arm and nailed it above the door. It bore these words: Mademoiselle Viau, Milliner. Ah! Said Madame Laroque, the bread is to be taken out of my mouth. The next day came a load of furniture, - not a very large load, as there was only a small stove, two tables, a bedstead, three chairs, a sort of lounge, and two large boxes. The man who brought the things put them in the house, and locked the door on them when he went away; then noth ing happened for two weeks, but Madame16 IN the village OF viger. Laroque watched. Such a queer little house it was, as it stood there S) new in its coat of gum colored paint. It looked just like a square bandbox which some Titan had made for his wife; and there seemed no doubt that if you took hold of the chimney and lifted the roof off, you would see the gigantic bonnet, with its strings and ribbons, which the Titaness could wear to church on Sundays. It may be a pretty village, say they, and rural life may have its charms when taken in small doses and at proper intervals; but eccentric indeed must be the man with pre tensions to culture who spends the early sum mer of his life in a remote village, where his only intellectual equals are the parson and the doctor, where comes not cab and 'bus, nor any evening papers, where gas and the simplest elements of sanitary science are unknown, and. Book The Curse of the Village Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curse of the Village Classic Reprint written by Hendrik Conscience and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curse of the Village The "Curse of the Village" is a bold description of the ravages of intemperance, - that bane of villages in the Old World as well as the New. This tale is one of his latest additions to the charming sketches of Flemish life, for which the author is so celebrated. We are not anxious to forestall public opinion of M. Conscience; but we must observe that both in his subjects and style he unites many of the peculiarities of Scott, Dickens, and Hans Christian Andersen. His romances possess the varied interest, the rapid narrative, and the bold grouping of the first of these distinguished writers; while his everyday stories are full of the nature, simplicity, humor, and pathos that have made Boz and Andersen, household names throughout our country. A British writer has well remarked that the characteristics of his works "are a hearty, sincere appreciation and love of the simple life of the poor in all its forms; a genial sympathy with its occupations, its joys and sorrows; a recognition of its dignity, and an earnest, reverent treatment of all conditions." Her cottage with the little workshed at its side was the last along the hill, and the Children, on their way to the few starved fields and naked refuse-heaps which did duty for country amongst the pits, crossed the black road before they came to it, and hurried past with furtive glances at the grim old figure standing there, half revealed by the orange light of her furnace, as with one hand she plied the bellows, and with the other plunged the ends Of thin iron rods into the burning gleeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Village Miss mitford, in one of her letters to Miss Barrett (afterwards Mrs Barrett Browning), says: I have never been without pecuniary care, care that pressed upon my thoughts the last thing at night, to wake in the morning with a dreary sense of pain, a pressure of something that weighed me to the earth. Such, indeed, was her life, made sordid and in part miserable through the diversions of a father, of whom it is difficult to speak with patience or find in his character one redeeming principle. A gambler who grasped and lost in play the fortunes of a wife and daughter in addition to his own, and when all was exhausted, lived upon and gambled with the earnings of his only child - even in dying leaving her only a heritage of debts to the amount of a thousand pounds, which she most nobly liquidated. The disinterested and the mercenary battle on together. The peasant, terribly matter-of-fact, labors from sunrise to sunset, working the earth he loves for the money it brings him, ever saving and economizing. As he gains, he hoards his wealth to buy more earth and (a universal ambition) to pose before his neighbors, much as do the business men in great cities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Sight of Land, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel One bright morning news came to the village, and filtered through the neighbour hood, that the house was undergoing a sort of renovating process. Mr. Banks and a whole army of workmen were busily engaged there - their vans were seen crawling slowly through the highways and by-ways towards the house. Mr. Banks was besieged with questions, and curiosity was rife everywhere. No avant-courrier had brought accounts of the new-comers - they might have dropped down from heaven, or risen up out of the sea, for aught anybody knew about them. Mr. Banks could tell nothing - he knew nothing. He had received his instructions from the, banking firm in London under whose orders he had always acted; he did not even know the name of the new tenants. Book Material Cultures in Canada

Download or read book Material Cultures in Canada written by Thomas Allen and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Cultures in Canada presents the vibrant and diverse field of material culture studies in Canadian literary, artistic, and political contexts today. The first of its kind, this collection features sixteen essays by leading scholars in Canada, each of whom examines a different object of study, including the beaver, geraniums, comics, water, a musical playlist, and the human body. The book’s three sections focus, in turn, on objects that are persistently material, on things whose materiality blends into the immaterial, and on the materials of spaces. Contributors highlight some of the most exciting new developments in the field, such as the emergence of “new materialism,” affect theory, globalization studies, and environmental criticism. Although the book has a Canadian centre, the majority of its contributors consider objects that cross borders or otherwise resist national affiliation. This collection will be valuable to readers within and outside of Canada who are interested in material culture studies and, in addition, will appeal to anyone interested in the central debates taking place in Canadian political and cultural life today, such as climate change, citizenship, shifts in urban and small-town life, and the persistence of imperialism.

It's just the sort 0' thing I can't abide in man or woman, Peggy; hardly in a child. I can't abide it.' Then don't abide it, ' said Peggy, pertly; 'that doesn't matter to anybody, I suppose.'
