Special thanks are due Senator Sterling who has known the author from boyhood and who has taken an unusual interest in the work. Many pages of carefully written criticisms were furnished, cit ing the author to errors of fact, ambiguities, repeti tions, incompleteness of detail, and inaccurate use of technical terms. Except for these criticisms many serious errors would have been overlooked, for there is no other person within the acquaintance of the author who has had that wide experience as lawyer, legislator, practical politician, orator, teacher, member of two constitutional conventions, and literary critic which so completely equips Sen ator Sterling for the task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Despoilers: Stories of the North Dakota Grain Fields Army crossed a portion of our State to learn that it was then a dry barren waste with no water anywhere. Even the Sheyenne and James rivers were dry beds. The army was obliged to transport water from the Red River at Fort Abercrombie and other points north. Be that as it may, the new settlers of forty years ago, found a plain covered with rich grasses, an indication that grain could be grown. The herds of buffalo and different species of the deer family that were known to have fed on these plains, and the tons of bones of these animals strewn over the surface, indicated that the grasses must have grown there a long time. It had every appearance of a very fertile plain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As the teams drew past the last house, the strangeness of the scene appealed irresistibly to the newly arrived immigrants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Prairies: Or the Landscape Geology of North Dakota How many of the readers of this book understand what is meant by the words Landscape Geology? Every one has seen a landscape, but we often hear people speak about Geology as though that meant rocks and stones and minerals and was therefore hard and dry. It is true that Geology deals with rocks and stones and minerals, among other things, and sometimes it is hard and dry. But Arithmetic and Gram mar are sometimes hard and dry also. It may not always be the fault of the subject that it is uninteresting. The trouble may be in the way it is studied. When the author was a boy and sat upon a hard, old-fashioned wooden bench in a little country schoolhouse between the hills, in the state of New York, he used to think the reading lessons were pretty hard and dry. Since he has become older, however, he has come to think that the fault was not in the subject, for he now finds these same speeches of Webster and Clay and Washington, and selections from Irving and Lowell and Emerson, very interesting. The trouble seems to have been in the way he studied them. He did not see the beauty in them. He saw big words hard to pronounce and harder to spell, and punctuation marks, at which he must stop, put in between the words! When he read it was to pronounce the words and mind the pauses! The trouble was not with the lessons, for they were beautiful and grand. The trouble was not entirely with the boy, for he tried to do what he was told to do. Perhaps the fault was not altogether that of the teacher, for she did not know any better! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
