Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Sixties The colonial days of our sires have been given to us in book and story, and of their everyday life have we heard in wildest romance; while the tale of the pioneer, who first invaded our primeval forests, has been handed down in all its weird adventure and heroism. Wealth has been represented in its glittering array; poverty in its ragged attire, even the slums of our great cities have been pictured to us in truth and fable; but the former operative of our New England mills, and the usages of those early days, have been largely lost to the public, and suffered to remain enveloped in the shadows of the past. In the earlier days of our history, the sites of our extensive cities were but sparsely settled towns, peopled by a farming community, who gained from the grudging soil a subsistence, but found few dollars for the less positive wants of a numerous family. Then, as a day star to woman, came the cotton mill, and gave to her fettered ambition the first chance to show the world her latent power for good. To the grasping of this first opportunity may we not trace (in part), the individuality and self-supporting independence which characterizes the woman and girl of to-day. With Yankee energy these mills were pushed forward, till in the sixties, they were to be found on many of our rivers and streams. In sending forth a work touching the gone-by period, we are not thoughtless of the many discouragements to be met, writers of name and experience, and books whose number is legion. Book Portraits of the Sixties Classic Reprint

Download or read book Portraits of the Sixties Classic Reprint written by Justin McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of the Sixties The early sixties have left a clear and deep impression on my memory. It was in the earliest of the sixties that I settled in London for a life of journalism and literature, to be much interrupted afterwards by politics. The London of the early sixties had no Thames Embankment and no underground railways and no tram-cars; the Law Courts on the Strand had not yet been dreamed of, and some of the judges still held their tribunals within enclosures opening from what I may call the off-side of Westminster Hall. But the outer aspect of London street life was not very different from that which we can contemplate at the present day. The hansom-cabs and the "growlers," familiar to all eyes now, were familiar to all eyes then. The great, palatial restaurants where fashion now entertains its friends at luncheons, dinners, and suppers were not in existence then, and the smart Londoner of the early sixties would not have thought of inviting his friends to a banquet in the taverns of the time. I may observe that the word "smart" used as I have just used it in the conventional language of the present reign would have conveyed no such meaning to the mind of a Londoner in the sixties. Book The War of the Sixties Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War of the Sixties Classic Reprint written by E. R. Hutchins and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War of the 'Sixties With the large number of books on our library shelves containing such a vast amount of information concerning the four years of war between the North and the South, it would seem almost presumptuous to attempt to add to it, yet it is hoped that this volume will be an addition, of both interest and value. There are some of the survivors of that war who think that they can give a detailed history of it, with minute descriptions of all the engagements they were in. The Editor gravely doubts this assumption. That there are a very large number who were especially impressed with one or more incidents there is no doubt. To such I have appealed for contributions, and from such only have I accepted articles for publication. My aim has been to collect real incidents - real facts from real participants - from persons who were there. These pages are not sectional, for it will be found that both the Union soldier and the Confederate have contributed. But two or three of the articles have been published before. One or two appeared several years ago in Harper's Weekly, but the manuscripts of these were sent to me by the authors, and Harper & Brothers kindly permitted their use here. To both I am indebted, as, indeed, I am indebted to all contributors. There have come to me scores of letters from the North and South, conveying the most cordial good wishes, and expressing pleasure at the prospect of the publication of this book. I am particularly grateful to Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Pickett, - distinguished women, - widows of two famous generals, a Union and a Confederate, who, amid a busy life, cheerfully found time to contribute an article each, and expressed an earnest hope for the early appearance of this book. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book London in the Sixties With a Few Digressions Classic Reprint

Download or read book London in the Sixties With a Few Digressions Classic Reprint written by One of the Old Brigade and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London in the Sixties (With a Few Digressions) London in the sixties was so different from the London of to-day that, looking back through the long vista of years, one is astonished at the gradual changes - unnoticed as they proceed. Streets have been annihilated and transformed into boulevards; churches have been removed and flats substituted; night houses and comfortable taverns demolished arid transformed into plate-glass abominations run by foreigners and Jews, whilst hulking louts in uniform, electro-plate and the shabby-genteel masher have taken the place of solid silver spoons and a higher type of humanity. So extensive indeed has been the transformation, that, if any night-bird of those naughty days were suddenly exhumed, and let loose in Soho, he would assuredly wander into a church in his search of a popular resort, and having come to scoff, might remain to pray, and so unwittingly fall into the goody-goody ways that make up our present monotonous existence. Book Classic Album Covers of the 60 s

Download or read book Classic Album Covers of the 60 s written by and published by Collins & Brown. This book was released on 2005-05-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hectic cultural and political upheavals occurring in the 1960s marked a divide between the relatively stable cultural environment of the previous decade and what is now regarded as the golden age of pop music and youth culture. The flourishing of alternative cultures in the latter part of the decade laid many of the foundations of later trends and subcultures. And this influence is nowhere more apparent than in record packaging, with classic graphic design and layouts reappearing again and again. ‘Classic Album Covers of the 60s’ is a collection of over 200 of the very best (and in some cases) worst that designers had to offer throughout the decade. Representative designs from each period are illustrated in full colour, taking the reader on a journey from the wholesome joviality of the 'Very Merry Macs' and 'Muscle Beach Party', through stylish and understated jazz cover designs, to the best psychedelic designs of the late 60s such as the Beatles’ "Sgt Pepper" and the Incredible String Band’s "The 5000 Spirits". The changing style of album cover design illustrated in ‘Classic Album Covers of the 60s’ provides a fascinating reflection of changing cultural trends during a decade whose ideas and artistic expressions sought to break the prevailing rules and, so doing, laid the foundations for cover design today.

Owing to the Kansas Brown condition there were some harsh and unreasonable utterances. Occasionally a claim owner or ranchman would be in town and of course have his say. A Mr. Putman became very much offended at me and threatened to shoot me. Not being seriously alarmed at his threat I did not avoid him. Book Encyclopedia of the Sixties 2 volumes

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Sixties 2 volumes written by Abbe A. Debolt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedian Robin Williams said that if you remember the '60s, you weren't there. This encyclopedia documents the people, places, movements, and culture of that memorable decade for those who lived it and those who came after. Encyclopedia of the Sixties: A Decade of Culture and Counterculture surveys the 1960s from January 1960 to December 1969. Nearly 500 entries cover everything from the British television cult classic The Avengers to the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. The two-volume work also includes biographies of artists, architects, authors, statesmen, military leaders, and cinematic stars, concentrating on what each individual accomplished during the 1960s, with brief postscripts of their lives beyond the period. There was much more to the Sixties than flower power and LSD, and the entries in this encyclopedia were compiled with an eye to providing a balanced view of the decade. Thus, unlike works that emphasize only the radical and revolutionary aspects of the period to the exclusion of everything else, these volumes include the political and cultural Right, taking a more academic than nostalgic approach and helping to fill a gap in the popular understanding of the era.
