Book excerpt: Originally appearing in the Dangerous Women anthology and now available as a solo ebook, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell is a chilling novella of the Cosmere, the universe shared by Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series and the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive. When the familiar and seemingly safe turns lethal, therein danger lies. Amid a forest where the shades of the dead linger all around, every homesteader knows to follow the Simple Rules: “Don’t kindle flame, don’t shed the blood of another, don't run at night. These things draw shades.” Silence Montane has broken all three rules on more than one occasion. And to protect her family from a murderous gang with high bounties on their heads, Silence will break every rule again, at the risk of becoming a shade herself.

Book excerpt: In Jaime Lee Moyer's A Barricade in Hell, Delia Martin has been gifted (or some would say cursed) with the ability to peer across to the other side. Since childhood, her constant companions have been ghosts. She used her powers and the help of those ghosts to defeat a twisted serial killer terrorizing her beloved San Francisco. Now it's 1917—the threshold of a modern age—and Delia lives a peaceful life with Police Captain Gabe Ryan. That peace shatters when a strange young girl starts haunting their lives and threatens Gabe. Delia tries to discover what this ghost wants as she becomes entangled in the mystery surrounding a charismatic evangelist who preaches pacifism and an end to war. But as young people begin to disappear, and audiences display a loyalty and fervor not attributable to simple persuasion, that message of peace reveals a hidden dark side. As Delia discovers the truth, she faces a choice—take a terrible risk to save her city, or chance losing everything? Book In the Shadow of Papillon

Download or read book In the Shadow of Papillon written by Frank Kane and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the collapse of his business and the loss of his home, Frank Kane made a catastrophic decision. In desperation, he agreed to smuggle cocaine out of Venezuela. Almost inevitably, he and his girlfriend, Sam, were caught. The price they paid was a ten-year sentence in the hell of the overcrowded Venezuelan prison system, notorious for corruption and abuse, and rife with weapons and gangs. At one point, Frank was held in the remote El Dorado prison, better known for being the one-time home of Henri Charrière, or Papillon. He witnessed countless murders as gang leaders fought for power, and he had to become as ruthless as his fellow inmates in order to survive. In an attempt to dull the reality of the horrendous conditions, he succumbed to drugs. After enduring years of systematic beatings by the guards and attempts on his life by inmates, Frank suffered more than one breakdown. He lost over four stone and was riddled with disease, but somehow he found the strength within himself to survive and was eventually released in 2004 after serving over seven years of his sentence. During the long walk back from hell, Frank decided to tell his story.

Book Living in the Shadow of a Hell Ship

Download or read book Living in the Shadow of a Hell Ship written by Georgianne Burlage and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Marine George Burlage was part of the largest surrender in American history at Bataan and Corregidor in the spring of 1942, where the Japanese captured more than 85,000 troops. More than forty percent would not survive World War II. His prisoner-of-war ordeal began at Cabanatuan near Manila, where the death rate in the early months of World War II was fifty men a day. Sensing that Cabanatuan was a death trap, he managed to get transferred to the isolated island of Palawan to help build an airfield for his captors. Malaria and other tropical diseases caused him to be sent to Manila for treatment in 1943 (a year later, 139 of his fellow POWs were massacred on Palawan). After another year of building airfields, Burlage survived a 38-day voyage in the hull of a Japanese hell ship and ended the war as a miner for Mitsubishi in northern Japan. By sheer luck, strength, and a bit of sabotage, he survived and was freed in September 1945 after the Japanese surrendered. He had endured starvation and torture and lost half of his prewar weight, but no one had killed him. After the war Burlage became a journalist and wrote about his POW experiences. His daughter Georgianne discovered his writings after George passed away in 2008, and edited them with additional historical material to provide context for his World War II experiences in the Pacific.

Along the way, you'll take a ferry ride with Aeneas to Hades, across the river Acheron; meet the Devil as imagined by a twelfth-century Irish monk--a monster with a thousand giant hands; wander the nine circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno, in which gluttons, liars, heretics, murderers, and hypocrites are made to endure crime-appropriate torture; and witness the debates that raged in Victorian England when new scientific advances cast doubt on the idea of an eternal hereafter. Drawing upon religious poetry, epics, theological treatises, stories of miracles, and accounts of saints' lives, this fascinating volume of hellscapes illuminates how Hell has long haunted us, in both life and death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (The perfect club) Where there was once inscrutable love, now, there isn't a thing left, anymore... Not one single thing that you could associate with being human, with being useful in any imaginable capacity. I had given up. Death itself could scoop me off the floor, but I'd just run through its fingers like dirty water, I knew it, id felt its shadow pass over me so many times before that the neglect had started to feel insulting, I guess there was nothing left worth taking? Looking up from the cold puddle of urine that had amassed about my prostrate frame, gravity pressed on my yellow eyes like a heavy mist, as a single thought danced through the swaying light of my contemptuous squalor, eating the silence like a brass parade, a thought that was honest, that was inescapably anguished - 'My heart had been broken'. (The ladder between two hells) Michael sat, patiently, drowsy within the dry heat that had accumulated from the rattling dashboard grills, radio silent, listening only to the freezing cold sleet that bounced off his windscreen in relentless torrents as he watched the minutes of his watch painfully ascend tick by tick - 16:47, 16:48... There was a moment where he felt an insatiable urge to leave the car, walk through the harsh February bite directly into the bank and cut this man's throat in front of everyone in the building, smiling in fulfilment as his gruesome life gushed from a severed artery that was only ever part of an unused heart. But for now, that dark fantasy would have to suffice, the feeling of his blade opening the flesh, the euphoric satisfaction that would intoxicate his reason the moment that warm blood was spilt from his slaughtered body, his heart twitched in anticipation, his thumb teased along the knifes edge that was concealed in his coat, pushing it harder against the sharpened tip with every recalled provocation. But for now, he would wait, with menacing fortitude he would bide his time until 17:00. (The house of turpitude) The year of my incarceration was 1981. Vague recollections of that crazy experience never fail to put a chill in my spine, whenever I'm inebriated enough to recollect the pungent smell of blood and urine that often poured through the cold hospital hallways, all the way up to the foot of my cell. I thought the place was a madhouse ran by professional lunatics. Dressed in stained white overcoats, concealing syringes that held the kind of juice to take a full week off your life, circling their prey delivering the line that they are assistants of rehabilitation, working towards the assimilation of anyone unfortunate enough to have found themselves consumed by the horror of its screaming walls. They would watch me through the peep hole of my steel chamber door, as analysts they would observe me in solitude, wrapped up by my attempts to piece together the fragmented chaos of the pervading insanity that called from within the structure that held me. They were our gods. Visions of the Shadow - Pictures of Heaven & Hell. A collection of Short stories and poems.
