Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Rocky Mountains to Alaska There was no sleep during the closing night not one solitary wink; all laws were dead-letters alas that they should so soon arise again from the dead! - and when the wreath of stars that crowns the golden statue of Our Lady on the high dome, two hundred feet in air, and the wide-sweeping crescent under her shining feet, burst suddenly into flame, and shed a lustre that was welcomed for miles and miles over the plains of Indiana - then, I assure you, we were all so deeply touched that we knew not whether to laugh or to weep, and I shall not tell you which we did. The moon was very full that night, and I didn't blame it! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lost in the Rockies: A Story of Adventure in the Rocky Mountains It is not often that a vigorous young man devoted to athletic sports and pastimes, fond of fishing and hunting, and a fine horseman, injures his health on account of too close application to study; but that is precisely what occurred in the case of Arlos Hay-man when he was only eighteen years of age. Arlos found, upon going back to his studies in the civil engineering school one autumn, that he had fallen woefully behind his class. He was so humiliated that he set his teeth with the grim resolution that he would forswear all amusement and exercise until he had fully made up his deficiencies. And he did it. Ho pulled up to the head of his class, only in the hour of triumph to collapse utterly. Had he not been accustomed to active, outdoor life, this might not have happened. His condition was alarming. Heroic measures were all that could save him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains In consequence of the unobserved omission of a date to my letters having been pointed out to me, I take this opportunity of stating that I travelled in Colorado in the autumn and early winter of 1873, on my way to England from the Sandwich Islands. The letters are a faithful picture of the country and state of society as it then was; but friends who have returned from the West within the last six months tell me that things are rapidly changing, that the frame house is replacing the log cabin, and that the footprints of elk and bighorn may be sought for in vain on the dewy slopes of Estes Park. Book Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado Classic Reprint written by United States Railroad Administration and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado The Rocky Mountain National Park is a marvelous grouping of gentleness and grandeur; an eloquent, wordless hymn, sung in silent, poetic pictures; a wilderness mountain world of groves and grass plots, crags and canyons, rounded lakes with shadow-matted shores that rest in peace within the purple forest. There are wild flowers of every color, and many a silken meadow edged with ferns. Brokenness and beauty, terrace upon terrace, a magnificent hanging wild garden. Over these terraces waters rush and pour. From ice-sculptured, snow-piled peaks, young and eager streams leap in white cascades between crowding cliffs and pines. Through this wildness winds the trail, with its secrets of the centuries, where adventures come and go and where the magic camp fire blossoms in the night. In these primeval scenes the grizzly bear gives to the wilderness its master spell; the mountain ram poses on the cliff; the laughing, varied voice of the coyote echoes when the afterglow falls; the home-loving beaver builds his willow-fringed hut; the birds sing; the cheerful chipmunk frolics and never grows up; and here the world stays young. The Rocky Mountain National Park holds adventure for every visitor. In it the world is new and wild, and on the imagination it produces the explorer's stirring joys. Its mile-high, unfenced scenes give freedom - splendid landscapes of the ideal world. Here for everyone are health and hope, efficiency and joy. Not a wild animal in this or any national park is ferocious. Strong is the friendliness of nature. With it everyone has a place in the sun. Her privileges are for each and all. Nature is universal, and here the stranger makes intimate acquaintances. Prejudice ceases. Each is at his best. In this greatest wilderness meeting place the East and the West understand and become friends. Travel unites people. Into this Park through the years will pour a continuous procession of peoples to mingle and form an international conference of friends. Here flags of nations and national boundary lines are forgotten. Kinship is the spirit of Nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For many years the high, rolling plateau from which rises the majestic Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado has been the resort of increasing summer thousands, but few, indeed, ventured into the fastnesses of the mountains. When plateau and mountains both became the Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915, the popularity of the neighborhood increased with extraordinary rapidity; the normal attendance of in 1915 became in 1916 and in 1917. Attention became centered upon the snowy mountains which Congress dignified as typical of the Rockies' noblest heights, and the desire to enter them began to possess those who had been content to View them from the plains; thousands of new visitors were attracted by their sudden fame. Mountaineering of the kind which is enjoyable to the unac customed has become popular. Increasing thousands yearly are now tasting of a new joy and yet one which is as old as man. Fortunately there existed, to meet this new need, a few men and women to whom these mountains were old and familiar friends. Fortunately these men and women, proselyters of nature, were' inspired to bring all men and women into the fellowship of the wild. This book is a compilation of experiences of the Colorado Mountain Club which cover many years of climbing these very mountains. Its purpose is to offset in some measure the many years of inexperience of those who come new to the mountains. If it will lessen the hardship of new climbers until experience shows them that there is no hardship, but in its stead vigorous nerves, bounding health, inspiration, and a rare communion with nature, its object and the hope of the club's members will be fulfilled.
