Promoting an equitable and inclusive understanding of literacy, Mariana Souto-Manning and her teacher contributors explore how elementary teachers can welcome the voices and languages of their students into their classrooms in their pursuit of reading and writing experiences that showcase children's skills and practices. Eight New York City public school teachers illustrate how the principles detailed in two NCTE position statements--NCTE Beliefs about the Students' Right to Write and The Students' Right to Read--come alive in their diverse classroom settings. When teachers view the communities their students come from as assets to and in the school, children not only thrive through an inclusive curriculum, but they also gain confidence and belief in themselves as learners while developing a critical consciousness that can change the world.

As a direct result of this seemingly inconsequential act, the former Head of the Florida Marine Patrol, three prominent Miami/Fort Lauderdale attorneys, an Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, and thirteen drug dealers all land in South Florida jails. The passenger himself ended up on Florida's death row. Oh, there is also humor in the book. Such as where, after the jury returned fifteen guilty verdicts against a banker, his pretty young Colombian wife, armed with a sizable, posh shoulder bag, began pummeling my back with little mercy. While, at about the same time, the banker's mother, a refined and diminutive lady, began jumping up and down with fists clenched, her shoes pounding the floor like a jackhammer, repeatedly screaming at me: "It's wrong, it's wrong, God will punish you. God will punish you!" No one warned me about such unnerving, emotional outbursts; much less the physical abuses I would suffer in protecting and serving the public good. (But God would have me take a Colombian wife).

Justice Rajindar Sachar was a socialist, an egalitarian, a defender of civil liberties, a deeply engaged citizen of India, and, above all, a humanist. A man who believed in standing for the last man in the line, he was 'armed' with a moral compass that never wavered. Born into an influential family from Lahore in 1923, he witnessed the pain of Partition. Yet, amazingly, he never bore any animosity towards Pakistan or its people. Son of Bhimsen Sachar, a prominent Congressman and Gandhian in pre-Partition Punjab and Chief Minister of Punjab post-1947, Rajindar did not disclose his famous surname during his early life to ensure people would not give him special treatment. He joined the Delhi High Court in 1970 but was transferred out of Delhi for voicing his opposition to the Emergency. During those dark days he shared a close bond with Justice H.R. Khanna, the lone voice of dissent in a Supreme Court that chose to side with Indira Gandhi. Brought back to Delhi after the Emergency, he rose to become the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Post-retirement, Sachar helmed the People's Union for Civil Liberties for many years. However, what Justice Rajindar Sachar is most-remembered for is the Sachar Committee Report (2006) which documented the social and economic condition of Muslims in India. The Report drew both praise and criticism, with some radical elements even threatening to send him back to Pakistan. However, his fight to preserve the secular fabric of India continued till the day he died. His autobiography comes at a critical time when India's democracy is under siege from within.
