Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of the Year: A deliciously entertaining account of expatriate life in a small village just outside Verona, Italy. Tim Parks is anything but a gentleman in Verona. So after ten years of living with his Italian wife, Rita, in a typical provincial Italian neighborhood, the novelist found that he had inadvertently collected a gallery full of splendid characters. In this wittily observed account, Parks introduces readers to his home town, with a statue of the Virgin at one end of the street, a derelict bottle factory at the other, and a wealth of exotic flora and fauna in between. Via Colombare, the village’s main street, offers an exemplary hodgepodge of all that is new and old in the bel paese, a point of collision between invading suburbia and diehard peasant tradition. It is a world of creeping vines, stuccoed walls, shotguns, security cameras, hypochondria, and expensive sports cars. More than a mere travelogue, Italian Neighbors is a vivid portrait of the real Italy and a compelling story of how even the most foreign people and places gradually assume the familiarity of home. “One of the most delightful travelogues imaginable . . . so vivid, so packed with delectable details.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect holiday reading from Domenica de Rosa, author of the bestselling Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries under the pen name Elly Griffiths. A group of would-be authors retreats to Tuscany where they learn more than how to write better. Patricia O'Hara's carefully composed ads for the writers' retreat she runs promise so much. The splendour of the thirteenth century Italian castle and chef Aldo's melanzane never fail to wow the guests, but huge maintenance bills and bad news from the bank mean it's make or break time for the Castello. Each of her seven aspiring authors arrives with the inevitable baggage alongside their unpublished manuscripts. But this August something is different, and soon lifelong spinster Mary is riding on the back of Aldo's vespa, and smouldering odd-job man Fabio has set more than one heart racing. As temperatures rise, the writers gossip, flirt and gently polish their prose by the pool. But with ghosts, scorpions, and some unexpected visitors to contend with, one thing's for sure: neither the Castello, nor Patricia, has ever seen a summer like this. Book Lost in the Spanish Quarter

Download or read book Lost in the Spanish Quarter written by Heddi Goodrich and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen in the New York Times Book Review. Set in the passionate, intense, and crumbling neighborhood known as the Spanish Quarter of Naples, comes a tale of two students searching for love and belonging in the city they so desperately want to call home. Years after leaving Naples with a broken heart, Heddi receives an email from her first love. Although she now lives in New Zealand, just the thought of the Spanish Quarter’s narrow, winding streets sparks the pain of longing. Heddi had found her place in that city built on Roman ruins and set against a sleeping volcano. A place she wants to call home despite being l’americana or the American. For Heddi’s group of university friends, Naples is either a refuge from their familial responsibilities or an entryway to a wider world. But for all of them, Naples was their real university of life: the setting of their unrestrained youth. When Heddi first met Pietro at a party hosted by her bohemian roommates, she was inexplicably drawn to the serious geology student. Despite coming from wildly different backgrounds—Heddi, a nomadic American; Pietro, an Italian farm boy—the two fell into a liberating romance. She was searching for the roots she never had, while he tried to escape his. Yet even after the two were doomed to part ways, their story isn’t finished just yet. Inspired by her own 10-year search for belonging in Naples, author Heddi Goodrich gives readers a passionate tale of a life caught between two worlds and a heartfelt ode to first love—of a place, of a person— where languages and cultures collide while dreams soar and crash in unexpected ways.

Book Old Italian Neighborhood Values

Download or read book Old Italian Neighborhood Values written by Stephen L. DeFelice and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do the boys reared during the 50s in an old Italian neighborhood in the city of Philadelphia think about modern-day values in America? Why not join us on September 6, 2001 at La Strega Restaurant for their annual dinner to find out?! You should be aware that the boys new, first-time guest is a famous New York City madam who has a lot to say. Important subjects such as politics, religion, sex, family stability, divorce, abortion, food and spirits, among others, are heatedly discussed. Needless to say, the dinner guests are not impressed with a number of modern American values and believe that theres an urgent need to bring back some of the old neighborhood ones. On September 11, less than a week after the dinner, the Attack on America occurred. They all then reconvened for dinner to discuss what impact this would have on American values, if any. It is important to note that many of the viewpoints are politically incorrect and sometimes the rough language of the old neighborhood is employed.

Book South Philadelphia s Little Italy and 9th Street Italian Market

Download or read book South Philadelphia s Little Italy and 9th Street Italian Market written by Michael DiPilla and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From forest and field to thriving neighborhood, explore the Italian influence in building, markets and maybe even a pizza pie, all in South Philly's Little Italy. What is now referred to as Little Italy was priginally called Irishtown when the first Italian moved to the area near Catherine Street around 1798, mostly forest and field in the middle of colonial Pennsylvania. By 1852, an Italian church had been established for the community, and from the advent of mass migration beginning in 1876 grew into Philadelphia's Little Italy. Many of the early families - Baldi, Pinto, and Fiorella - established businesses in the area that continue today. Other beautiful buildings still left standing are remnants of the once thriving banking industry in this little neighborhood. As time progressed, the market expanded beyond its local neighbors, and Italians throughout Philadelphia developed their own Little Italy communities to the north, west, and farther south of the original boundaries.
