Unsalaried groups of women began living together, wearing plain dress, and performing nursing, teaching, and other works of welfare. Modeled after the lifestyles of Catholic nuns, these women became America’s first deaconesses. Sanctified Sisters,the first history of the deaconess movement in the United States, traces its origins in the late nineteenth century through to its present manifestations. Drawing on archival research, demographic surveys, and material culture evidence, Jenny Wiley Legath offers new insights into who the deaconesses were, how they lived, and what their legacy has been for women in Protestant Christianity. The book argues that the deaconess movement enabled Protestant women—particularly single women—to gain power in a male-dominated Protestant world. They created hundreds of new institutions within Protestantism and created new roles for women within the church. While some who study women’s ordination draw a line from the deaconesses’ work to the struggle for women’s ordination in various branches of Protestant Christianity, Legath argues that most deaconesses were not interested in ordination. Yet, while they didn’t mean to, they did end up providing a foundation for today’s ordination debates. Faith in the government plummeted, leaving the nation feeling betrayed and unsure who could be trusted anymore. In Evil Deeds in High Places, David E. Settje examines how Christian institutions reacted to this moral and ethical collapse, and the ways in which they chose to assert their moral authority. Settje argues that Watergate was a turning point for spurring Christian engagement with politics. While American Christians had certainly already been active in the public sphere, these events motivated a more urgent engagement in response, and served to pave the way for conservatives to push more fully into political power. Historians have carefully analyzed the judicial, media, congressional, and presidential actions surrounding Watergate, but there has been very little consideration of popular reactions of Americans across the political spectrum. Though this book does not aspire to offer a comprehensive picture of America’s citizenry, by examining the variety of Protestant Christian experiences—those more conservative, those more liberal, and those in between—and by incorporating analyses of both white and black Christian reactions, it captures a significant swath of the American population at the time, providing one of the only studies to examine how everyday Americans viewed the events of Watergate. Grasping the dynamics of Christian responses to Watergate enables us to comprehend more completely that volatile moment in US history, and provides important context to make sense of reactions to our more recent political turmoil.

Excerpt: ...Bishop Thoburn began to advocate the Deaconess Cause, and Mrs. Lucy Rider Meyer threw the weight of her powerful personality into the scales, it did not prove difficult to inaugurate the movement, which was to take a powerful hold on the Church in a comparatively short space of time. In 1886, Dr. J. M. Thoburn (at present Bishop Thoburn), who had been sent to India in 1859, and who is beyond question one of our greatest missionaries, returned to America to restore his health. The voyage proved to be of historic significance. The misery of women in India was uppermost in his mind during the trip, and, after much prayer, the thought came to him that the introduction of the Deaconess Work might bring the desired relief. Millions of the women of India are debarred from participating in the sacrament of the communion, and this deplorable state of affairs will necessarily continue until one of their own sex can administer this sacrament. Whenever the Mission Conferences in India convene, this matter is usually discussed, and the question has often been asked whether it be possible to revive the Deaconess Order of the primitive Church, and thus to create an office which would empower the female missionaries to administer the holy communion to the Zenana women, who are kept in such strict seclusion that missionaries are not allowed to approach them for that purpose. If in the primitive Church laymen (e. g., midwives) were permitted to administer baptism in case of urgency, why should female missionaries be prohibited from administering baptism to Zenana women who have been prepared for admission into the Church, and desire to be baptized? Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.
