Book excerpt: A Real Christian: The Life of John Wesley fills a void in available books in Wesleyan studies by providing a brief, solid biography that focuses on Wesley himself. While exploring Wesley's ancestry, birth, death, and every major biographical and theological event between, Collins also explores the theme of John Wesley's spiritual growth and maturation. Wesley came to the conclusion that real Christians are those whose inward (and outward) lives have been transformed by the bountiful sanctifying grace of God -- what he termed real Christianity--and this he strove to obtain for himself. Real Christianity, as Wesley understood it, embraces both works of piety and mercy, the person and the social.

Book Crossing the Divide

Download or read book Crossing the Divide written by Jake Hanson and published by Barbour Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Christians today reach a world that is becoming increasingly intolerant to the teachings of the church? John Wesley entered the scene of 18th century England with greater hostility than exists today in the West. His life and teaching offer the 21st century church a way forward. John Wesley forged his ministry in the midst of mobs, riots, and angry diatribes, yet this fearless evangelist found a way to reach the very enemies in need of transformation. This complex personality drove one of the most significant renewal movements of the English-speaking world--a movement that transformed the spirituality, morality, and work of the church for the next three centuries.

Book The Works of John Wesley

Download or read book The Works of John Wesley written by John Wesley and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth in an eagerly awaited series of four volumes of John Wesley's sermons. This volume contains 18 sermons that were published in the Arminian Magazine from 1789 to 1792. It also contains 19 sermons that were taken from Wesley's manuscripts. Of all the genres in Wesley's prodigious output, his sermons most clearly focus and expound his understanding of Christian existence. Outler's introduction in the first volume concentrates two decades of painstaking research and thought on Wesley. From this he ably sets the stage for a fuller understanding and appreciation of a major Christian heritage, a heritage which can at last be seen as a whole against the background of its sources. The four volumes contain 151 sermons, including a number recovered from Wesley's manuscripts. These constitute the core of Wesley's doctrinal teachings upon which his own evangelical movement was founded. Following Wesley's own ordering, Dr. Outler begins with the familiar Sermons on Several Occasions, which present Wesley's basic teachings on salvation and form the bulk of the first two volumes in the series. Outler masterfully demonstrates the significance of all the subsequent sermons since they exhibit Wesley's entire approach to the Christian life. Each volume is rich with footnotes that include the identification of quotations, elucidation of references, the tracing of key themes, and vital background information on each sermon. Representing the culmination of twenty years of exhaustive research, it is the purpose of these conclusive volumes to keep alive the growing interest in Wesleyan studies for the entire Christian church. All Works of John Wesley volumes are designed to keep the pages clean and in place for years to come., with casebound non-cloth hardcover, dust jacket, and secure adhesive binding.

Book excerpt: John Wesley bequeathed his manuscripts to three trusted colleagues with the expectation that they would prepare, write, and publish a suitable biography after his death. An ex-Methodist preacher, John Hampson, beat them into print with an unflattering portrait of Methodism's founder. The book was published in June of 1791, only three months after Wesley was buried. To counter this publication, Thomas Coke and Henry Moore rushed into print an "authorized" and more flattering account. Their Life of John Wesley was first published in April 1792, and the authors had high hopes for their 542-page book. By showing "how faithfully, zealously, and prudently Wesley labored" may thereby be more abundantly stimulated to be followers of him, as he was of Christ."A year later the first and only known American edition was published in Philadelphia by John Dickins who only three years earlier had begun the publishing house for the Methodist Episcopal Church. Twenty-three know editions/printings kept the book available in England until 1864. We are pleased to reprint the first American printing by Philadelphia printer Parry Hall for John Dickins in 1793.

Book The First Black Archaeologist

Download or read book The First Black Archaeologist written by John W.I. Lee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring portrait of an overlooked pioneer in Black history and American archaeology The First Black Archaeologist reveals the untold story of a pioneering African American classical scholar, teacher, community leader, and missionary. Born into slavery in rural Georgia, John Wesley Gilbert (1863-1923) gained national prominence in the early 1900s, but his accomplishments are little known today. Using evidence from archives across the U.S. and Europe, from contemporary publications, and from newly discovered documents, this book chronicles, for the first time, Gilbert's remarkable journey. As we follow Gilbert from the segregated public schools of Augusta, Georgia, to the lecture halls of Brown University, to his hiring as the first black faculty member of Augusta's Paine Institute, and through his travels in Greece, western Europe, and the Belgian Congo, we learn about the development of African American intellectual and religious culture, and about the enormous achievements of an entire generation of black students and educators. Readers interested in the early development of American archaeology in Greece will find an entirely new perspective here, as Gilbert was one of the first Americans of any race to do archaeological work in Greece. Those interested in African American history and culture will gain an invaluable new perspective on a leading yet hidden figure of the late 1800s and early 1900s, whose life and work touched many different aspects of the African American experience.
