William Poole What makes preachers and/or pastors in the African American culture great is that they lead by example. Utilizing the talents of others through challenging, inspiring, not enabling, modeling and encouraging. To illustrate these leadership techniques, J. William Poole’s In the African-American Culture, What Makes Preachers and/or Pastors Great? examines the characteristics of “great pastors and/or preachers.” Thus, John provides a section were the lives and work of four renowned Afro-American preachers and/or pastors are presented. The lives of the four exemplify personal integrity and flexibility, great team builders with a sense of direction with great faith, commitment and great joy in ministry. Through the Holy Spirit, they found and followed God’s Plan for their lives. The four are Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, Dr. L. Venchael Booth, Dr. Edward Victor Hill and Dr. Gardner C. Taylor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enduring Truth argues that faithfulness to Scripture is the solution to a “crisis” among African American preaching. Though misinterpreting God’s Word is not restricted to one race or culture, author Aaron Lavender identifies three factors that have precipitated the decline of black preaching specifically: racial segregation, black liberation theology, and prosperity theology. The book’s first chapter recounts the history of the crisis, noting how discrimination in theological education led black ministers to liberal colleges and seminaries that prophetically confronted Jim Crow but taught the social gospel and other forms of theological error. Such schools ultimately were harmful to the spiritual health of black churches. Subsequent chapters discuss the role of biblical exegesis in preaching, develop a theology of preaching, and suggest preaching methods for the postmodern world. Every biblical text has one meaning, according to Lavender. The preacher’s job is to determine and communicate that meaning, then show its relevance in the cultural context of his hearers. Proof-texting and relativism, Lavender writes, are two great enemies of biblical preaching. While focused on the African American context, this volume addresses topics relevant to all preachers. Enduring Truth is suited both for ministry practitioners and preaching courses. It will help readers elevate the Word of God over the worldly allures of any ministry setting.

Book Let the Men Fight

Download or read book Let the Men Fight written by Gregory G. Ogle and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Involvement by men, especially African American men, in the Christian church has always been notoriously sparse. Pastors, seminary scholars, and Christian leaders, male and female, have pondered the problem, but it remains a question. The women ask, “What is wrong with the brothers?” My response is, “Why does it have to be something wrong with the brothers?” Could it be that as African American males want to hear something other than what is being preached? Have we considered preaching the Gospel of Christ from a masculine perspective? Is it possible that because the majority of churches are 70% female, that the Good News is inadvertently preached by male and female preachers from an implicit female perspective? Perhaps preachers are subconsciously more concerned with maintaining the satisfaction of the bulk of the tithing parishioners, who are women? Let the Men Fight challenges the notion that the fault resides with African American men, and strives to provide a “male sensitive” Word. However, there is a caveat. The warning is, upon learning and accepting the truth, God expects us to go tell and teach others. Matthew 28:19-20 says, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 20. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

Book The Faithful Preacher Foreword by John Piper

Download or read book The Faithful Preacher Foreword by John Piper written by Thabiti M. Anyabwile and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2007-03-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cliché is that those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. But Thabiti Anyabwile contends that it is not the mistakes we must study; it is the people who have overcome them. So he presents three of the most influential African-American pastors in American history who can teach us what faithful ministry entails. Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833) reminds pastors that eternity must shape our ministry. Daniel A. Payne (1811-1893) stresses the importance of character and preparation to faithful shepherding. And Francis J. Grimké (1850-1937) provides a vision for engaging the world with the gospel. While they are from the African-American tradition, they, like all true saints, belong to all Christians of every background and era. Distinctive for its use of rare and out-of-print messages, Anaybwile's work is valuable as a reference as well as a devotional resource.

Download or read book The Word Made Plain written by James H. Harris and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching mediates the word of God into a cultural matrix. And no American preaching has done so more effectively and powerfully than African American preaching, claims noted homiletician James Harris. Known for its rhetorical strength, social-justice orientation, and dead-on connection to the community's lived experience, black preaching is here analyzed and proposed as a model for all preaching. Harris grounds black preaching in the self-understanding of the historic black church and its most prominent preachers, from Martin Luther King Jr. to Samuel Proctor. Harris also explores the hermeneutical and aesthetic dimensions of preaching, especially at the intersection of sacred text and the broader culture. He then lays out the specific distinguishing characteristics of black preaching, including verbal cadence and rhythm, use of gestures, and, most thoroughly, the narrative model of the sermon. His last chapter, ''Preaching Plainly,'' provides specific instructions on how to put the sermon together employing this model.
