Book From Colonial to Modern

Download or read book From Colonial to Modern written by Michelle J. Smith and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a comparison of Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand texts published between 1840 and 1940, From Colonial to Modern develops a new history of colonial girlhoods revealing how girlhood in each of these emerging nations reflects a unique political, social, and cultural context. Print culture was central to the definition, and redefinition, of colonial girlhood during this period of rapid change. Models of girlhood are shared between settler colonies and contain many similar attitudes towards family, the natural world, education, employment, modernity, and race, yet, as the authors argue, these texts also reveal different attitudes that emerged out of distinct colonial experiences. Unlike the imperial model representing the British ideal, the transnational girl is an adaptation of British imperial femininity and holds, for example, a unique perception of Indigenous culture and imperialism. Drawing on fiction, girls’ magazines, and school magazine, the authors shine a light on neglected corners of the literary histories of these three nations and strengthen our knowledge of femininity in white settler colonies.

Book In Search of Nannie Tyler

Download or read book In Search of Nannie Tyler written by Carolyn Stier Ferrell and published by Ideas Into Books Westview. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning one hundred years from 1820 to 1920, the Tyler family impacted the emerging town of Clarksville, Tennessee in ways unimaginable. Memories of this family resurfaced when a single, deplorable theft one summer night in 1996 involved the graveside statue of the daughter of the notable Clarksville Judge Charles Waller Tyler. This beloved little girl had died suddenly at age four from a disease easily prevented today. Public reaction to the theft was so immediate and demonstrative that the story became a national news item. Against all odds, the statue reappeared, hundreds of miles from its origin, to the relief of Clarksville citizens. This is the story of Nannie Tyler, her family, her stolen statue, and the people of a southern town who loved her.

Book Psyche s Exile an empirical odyssey in search of the soul

Download or read book Psyche s Exile an empirical odyssey in search of the soul written by Jerry Kroth and published by Genotype. This book was released on 2011 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psyche’s Exile: an empirical odyssey in search of the soul. “Psyche” means “soul” in Greek, and “psychology” literally means ‘the study of the soul.’ For over a century American psychology has gone in precisely the opposite direction. Soul = mind, and mind = brain with no exceptions! This reductionist paradigm is challenged in this book as Professor Kroth reviews eight politically incorrect, ‘forbidden’ databases in his empirical pursuit of the immortal soul of the ages: near-death experiences, deathbed visions, precognitive dreams, premonitions, synchronicity, telepathy, states of possession, just to name a few. The journey leads to a fascinating rediscovery of the soul. Reviews “Psyche’s Exile . . is an absolute treasure trove of carefully collected experiential and experimental data spanning the research areas of anthropology, sociology, religion, spirituality, psychology, and physics. Although we are still some human evolutionary time away from experimentally proving the existence of the human soul, there is certainly enough good data available at present to make it a viable working hypothesis. Dr. Kroth is dedicated to his craft as a professional explorer of nature in its many forms. For myself, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to my scientific colleagues and my friends.” —William A. Tiller, Ph.D., professor of physics: Stanford University; Author of Science and Human Transformation

Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning author of Europe Central – a dazzling fictional account of the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians In this fifth installment in his acclaimed Seven Dreams series of novels examining the collisions between Native Americans and European colonizers, William T. Vollmann tells the story of the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians, with flashbacks to the Civil War. Defrauded and intimidated at every turn, the Nez Perces finally went on the warpath in 1877, subjecting the U.S. Army to its greatest defeat since Little Big Horn the previous year, as they fled from northeast Oregon across Montana to the Canadian border. Vollmann’s main character is not the legendary Chief Joseph but his pursuer, General Oliver Otis Howard, the brave, shy, tormented, devoutly Christian Civil War veteran. In this novel, we see him as commander, father, son, husband, friend, and killer. Teeming with many vivid characters on both sides of the conflict, and written in an original style in which the printed page works as a stage with multiple layers of foreground and background, The Dying Grass is another mesmerizing achievement from one of the most ambitious writers of our time.

Download or read book My Letters to Amy written by Kimberley Schumacher and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I cant change how people choose to see things. I can choose to forgive. I may even be the lucky one. As the scapegoat I was sent out and away, shunned by all sides and made to carry the guilt of the entire situation on my head. But I was sent away, out into the wilderness where I cried, I mourned, and I was able to heal instead of harbor resentment and hatred. From there I began to rebuild, and pray for forgiveness. I would pray so that I could forgive. Then I began to feel restored and my Father in heaven began to help me see myself the way He does. I dont have to carry the pain; I only need from time to time to explain the scars. Hopefully, in doing so, I can prevent some of historys mistakes from invading our tomorrows Its our turn now, put down the rocks, share the gift.
