Book From Land to Lands from Eden to the Renewed Earth

Download or read book From Land to Lands from Eden to the Renewed Earth written by Munther Isaac and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The land is an important theme in the Bible. It is a theme through which the whole biblical history found in the Old and New Testaments can be studied and analyzed. Looking at the land in the Bible from its beginnings in the garden of Eden this publication approaches the theme from three distinct perspectives – holiness, the covenant, and the kingdom. Through careful analysis the author recognises that the land has been universalized in Christ, as anticipated in the Old Testament, and as a result promotes a missional theology of the land that underlines the social and territorial dimensions of redemption.

Book The Land the Bible and History

Download or read book The Land the Bible and History written by Alain Marchadour and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book offers a Catholic view of the Holy Land in the debate that rages among Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Alain Marchadour and David Neuhaus, two biblical scholars and priests living in Jerusalem, clearly analyze the Promised Land-as concept, history, and contested terrain-in Catholic teaching and doctrine. They offer an analytical reading of the entire Christian Bible (Old and New Testaments) with reference to the idea of the Land promised by God. They explore early and medieval attitudes, especially with regard to the Holy Places and the Jewish people. Moving carefully to the present day, they focus on anti-Semitism, the tragedy ofthe Shoah, Western colonialism in the Middle East, the creation of the State of Israel, and the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem as they examine Catholic reactions to the tumultuous events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly the renewal of Catholic thought in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council. Studying the most recent Church documents, Marchadour and Neuhaus confront the ongoing struggle for peace, justice, and reconciliation in the Middle East. This illuminating book is an essential tool for all those struggling to understand the links between the Bible, the Church, and contemporary Middle Eastern realities, especially in Israel and Palestine.

Book All the Boundaries of the Land

Download or read book All the Boundaries of the Land written by Nili Wazana and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the borders of the Promised Land in the Hebrew Bible? What drives and characterizes the descriptions given of them? The starting point for this research lies in the premise that, despite their detailed geographical nature, the biblical texts are not genuinely geographical documents. They are more appropriately to be understood and examined as literary texts composed in the service of an ideological agenda. In order to comprehend properly the idea of the Promised Land presented in the Hebrew Bible—its definitions, dimensions, and significance—we must understand that the descriptions belong to diverse literary genres, were composed according to various literary devices that require decoding, and that reflect a range of perspectives, outlooks, and notions. All the Boundaries of the Land provides engaging fresh perspectives on the variant views of the Promised Land in the interface between literature, history, geography, and ideology. It does not intend to answer the question of how the borders of the land altered throughout the course of history. The reader will find no maps or outlines in this book. The emphasis is on the literary tools that were employed by the biblical authors who described the borders, and the ideological motives that guided them. Erratum: All the Boundaries of the Land: The Promised Land in Biblical Thought in Light of the Ancient Near East was published with the support of the Israel Science Foundation (ISF). They funded the translation of the book into English and enabled Nili Wazana to make her research accessible to the wider scientific community. The preface to the book mistakenly fails to mention their contribution, thanking instead the Israel Academy of Science. Future editions will acknowledge the author’s gratitude to the Israel Science Foundation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Scripture Lands: New Views of Sacred Places The feeling of personal want for such a book as "In Scripture Lands" was the first incentive toward its production. I wanted to see pictures of the places made sacred by Scriptural History which were not "idealized" by the pencils of those whose sympathy with Art too often rode over Truth. I wanted to see such pictures accompanied by descriptions free om either the shallow sentiment of the superficial tourist, the narrowness of the enthusiast, or the arbitrariness of denominationalism. I likewise wanted them connected with data and textual references which should give me helpful hints for the further study and enjoyment of the events that have made the Scripture Lands the most interesting of any in the world. With these wants; with the Holy Bible as my guide-book with careful art training; with ardent enthusiasm for the picturesque as well as for the historical; with a love for nature and for human nature; with a camera fitted with a student's eye, and with perfect health and strength, I went at the task I had set for myself. I was not always sure where all these would lead me to, but here is the story and here are some of the results. I am convinced that there are other people whose wants have been similar to those I have described as my own; so, in face of the fact that there is no end to books of travel in the lands of the Scriptures, I appear with mine.
