Book excerpt: Prescient and chilling, DeMille's #1 New York Times bestselling novel takes us into the heart of a new Cold War with a clock-ticking plot that has Manhattan in its crosshairs. After a showdown with the notorious Yemeni terrorist known as The Panther, John Corey has left the Anti-Terrorist Task Force and returned home to New York City, taking a job with the Diplomatic Surveillance Group. Although Corey's new assignment with the DSG-surveilling Russian diplomats working at the U.N. Mission-is thought to be "a quiet end," he is more than happy to be out from under the thumb of the FBI and free from the bureaucracy of office life. But Corey realizes something the U.S. government doesn't: The all-too-real threat of a newly resurgent Russia. When Vasily Petrov, a colonel in the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service posing as a diplomat with the Russian U.N. Mission, mysteriously disappears from a Russian oligarch's party in Southampton, it's up to Corey to track him down. What are the Russians up to and why? Is there a possible nuclear threat, a so-called radiant angel? Will Corey find Petrov and put a stop to whatever he has planned before it's too late? Or will Corey finally be outrun and outsmarted, with America facing the prospect of a crippling attack unlike anything it's ever seen before? Please note: Radiant Angel is published in the UK under the title A Quiet End.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assimilation?s Agent reveals the life and opinions of Edwin L. Chalcraft (1855?1943), a superintendent in the federal Indian boarding schools during the critical periodøof forced assimilation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chalcraft was hired by the Office of Indian Affairs (now known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs) in 1883. During his nearly four decades of service, he worked at a number of Indian boarding schools and agencies, including the Chehalis Indian School in Oakville, Washington; Puyallup Indian School in Tacoma, Washington; Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon; Wind River Indian School in Wind River, Wyoming; Jones Male Academy in Hartshorne, Oklahoma; and Siletz Indian Agency in Oregon. In this memoir Chalcraft discusses the Grant peace policy, the inspection system, allotment, the treatment of tuberculosis, corporal punishment, alcoholism, and patronage. Extensive coverage is also given to the Indian Shaker Church and the government?s response to this perceived threat to assimilation. Assimilation?s Agent illuminates the sometimes treacherous political maneuverings and difficult decisions faced by government officials at Indian boarding schools. It offers a rarely heard and today controversial "top-down" view of government policies to educate and assimilate Indians. Drawing on a large collection of unpublished letters and documents, Cary C. Collins?s introduction and notes furnish important historical background and context. Assimilation?s Agent illustrates the government's long-term program for dealing with Native peoples and the shortcomings of its approach during one of the most consequential eras in the long and often troubled history of American Indian and white relations.

Book Remarriage in Early Christianity

Download or read book Remarriage in Early Christianity written by A. Andrew Das and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did early Christians believe about remarriage after divorce? The New Testament sends mixed messages about divorce. Jesus forbids it in Mark’s and Luke’s Gospels, but he seems to make an exception for victims of infidelity in Matthew’s Gospel. Paul permits divorce in 1 Corinthians when an unbeliever initiates it. Yet other Pauline passages imply that remarriage after divorce constitutes adultery. A. Andrew Das confronts this dissonance in Remarriage in Early Christianity. Challenging scholarly consensus, Das argues that early Christians did not approve of remarriage after divorce. His argument—covering contemporary Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts, the Gospels, Paul’s letters, and ante-Nicene interpretation—reveals greater consistency in early Christianity than is often assumed. Das pays special attention to the Greek words used in contemporary bills of divorce and in the New Testament, offering much-needed clarity on hotly contested concepts like porneia. At once sensitive and objective, Das finds an exegetically sound answer to the question of remarriage among early Christians. This bold study will challenge scholars and enlighten any Christian concerned with what Scripture has to say on this perennially relevant topic.

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the journey of discovery by a man who went on a quest to solve a mystery. Did his grandmother die the way he was told she had, or was she murdered? The rumor had plagued his family for almost four decades. Could the unthinkable be true, that his own grandfather might have been involved with the mysterious death of his grandmother? Along the way in his multiyear odyssey, the author discovers his family roots, his family tree, and the disturbing secrets long buried by his family. He vividly portrays the life and culture of Paducah, Kentucky, East St. Louis, Illinois, and Okeechobee, Florida, in the 1910s through the 1970s. He displays a culture and dialect of a strong breed of people that lived in rural western Kentucky in the early 1900s. He discovers extreme violence, knife fights, gunfights, bigamy, racism, thievery, bootlegging, and long-lost siblings. He discovers secrets within military and government files, unknown mental illnesses, wife-beatings, and murders. He discovers his grandfather’s World War II emprise, and the surprises it revealed. He uncovers the secrets of Freemasonry, and how it may have been involved in his grandmother’s death. He uncovers many lies from many people, and lawlessness by some in his family. The story includes attempts at a belated exhumation and autopsy to finally solve the mystery once and for all. He finally brings together all the evidence, pieces of a bizarre mystery, never before assembled by his family, to solve the enigma of his grandmother’s death. This book details the emotional pendulum experienced by a grandson on a journey to solve a riddle, and being repeatedly shocked and dumbfounded by what he found. Anne Carayon: “Great entertaining narrative! The mystery thickens as you go along! The historical and sociological backgrounds have transformed a personal sad story into a page of American Middle West history. It is also a description of what man can do to achieve his egotistical goals. That’s universal and timeless.” Deborah Schadt: “How brave it was of Dwain Tucker to put so much thought, time, and energy into looking for something he didn’t want to find! His intention to uncover evidence to disprove a family murder rumor led him to the discovery of numerous family secrets, both good and bad. “Many in Dwain Tucker’s family learned everything they knew from the school of hard knocks, and he was so honest in his portrayal of the ‘colorful’ characters in his family. His attempt at imitating the dialect used by the people of that place and time is both humorous and accurate. “Dwain has my admiration, appreciation, and gratitude for preserving a part of the Tucker family history—that if not for his perseverance would have otherwise been forever lost.”
