Book In Our Quiet Village

Download or read book In Our Quiet Village written by Mary Lou Chayes and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a stifling August night in 1906, Karl Bauer fired two shots at his second wife. His sixteen-year old daughter, Minna struggled to wrest the revolver from his hands and the shots went wild. Her father, believing that he had murdered, turned the gun on himself. The intended victim, the wicked step-mother, survived. He died. This true event serves as the fulcrum for the story. At ninety, Minna reveals this shameful secret to her own daughter, laying bare the mysterious pent-up anger between them. The story traces the lives of three generations marked by the impact of this violent act. Set in a quiet village in New York's Mohawk valley during the burgeoning late 19th century, the personal dramas are played out against a backdrop of the rich political and historic events of the time; the rise of the labor movement and struggle for women's rights. As a child, the author romanticized her mother's early life; imagining her orphaned, left in the care of a wicked stepmother. However, when her mother, aged ninety, revealed the entire shocking truth, the author's powerful imaginings surrounding these events became first a journal, then a memoir and eventually expanded into this novel. Ms. Chayes holds a bachelor of music degree, a degree in Interior and Environmental Design from UCLA and was writer and executive producer of a critically acclaimed documentary film about her renowned teacher of piano, Karl Ulrich Schnabel. After raising a large family and following several careers in the arts, she now writes each day. She is eighty-two years old and lives with her husband in Los Angeles.

Except Brian Adamson, twenty-six years old and still trapped in a claustrophobic existence dominated by a widowed mother whose life was filled by angels and saints with little love left for her son. She nevertheless expected him to replicate the life of her “dear departed husband,” whom truth be told, she had barely tolerated. But she went too far when she picked out a clone of herself as Brian’s intended bride. If he was ever to be happy, he had to make a break for it. But what can an inexperienced, guilt-ridden and insecure young Canadian do to break the apron strings that bind? The answer stared him in the face one day when he was perusing the MONTREAL STAR at his dead-end office job. Wanted: College Graduates Young men and women who would like to make a difference by serving as volunteer teachers in developing countries ... Maybe there was a solution to his problem after all! If you loved Kwei Quartey’s mystery novels or the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series, you will be delighted by Brian’s late-blooming adventures as he finds love and helps solve a murder that has perplexed the residents of the “quiet” little village where he ends up teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wounded soldier and a rector’s daughter discover strange goings-on in their sleepy English village in this Regency-era mystery series opener. Major Robert Kurland has returned to the quiet vistas of Kurland St. Mary to recuperate from the horrors of Waterloo. However injured his body may be, his mind is as active as ever. Too active, perhaps. When he glimpses a shadowy figure from his bedroom window struggling with a heavy load, the tranquil façade of the village begins to loom sinister… Unable to forget the incident, Robert confides in his childhood friend, Miss Lucy Harrington. As the dutiful daughter of the widowed rector, following up on the major's suspicions offers a welcome diversion—but soon presents real danger. Someone is intent on stopping their investigation. And in a place where no one locks their doors, a series of thefts and the disappearance of two young serving girls demands explanation… As Robert grapples with his difficult recovery, he and Lucy try to unearth the dark truth lurking within the village shadows, and stop a killer waiting to strike again… Praise for Death Comes to the Village “[A] delightful debut…Readers will hope death returns soon to Kurland St. Mary.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Lloyd combines a satisfying mystery with plenty of wit and character development.”—Booklist

She looks to her arranged marriage to the son of a nomadic tribal chief with hope that it will deliver her from this oppression; instead, Daryâ finds herself regularly beaten by her wrathful husband, and more isolated than she can bear. Seeing no choice other than to flee from her torment, Daryâ barely escapes through the foothills of the Hindu Kush. Destitute and alone, Daryâ meets David Ingram, an enigmatic Englishman traveling in Afghanistan. Although he is a complete stranger, she joins him on his journey to Bombay—and embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.
