Book excerpt: Richard Lacey, former Pittsburgh Steeler turned detective, is contacted by Jeanette Green to resolve the shooting of her deceased, compulsive gambling husband, Syd. Lacey tells her to let sleeping dogs lie, but she insists on an investigation. What seems like a routine investigation turns into a sack of scorpions when both the Mafia and the State of New Jersey take interest. Lacey’s pregnant wife, Marilyn, is kidnapped, pitting Lacey against the mob. Lacey finds that Syd was involved in the construction of a new center in Atlantic City. He works with government authorities to untangle the involvement of the mob in Atlantic City construction. When a hit on Lacey by the mob fails, government agencies make a clandestine move on the mob. Later, Lacey discovers that the mob was not involved in the hit on Syd Green. He finds the solution much closer to home.

Book Ex Gay No Way

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Ex Gay No Way written by Jallen Rix and published by Findhorn Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing to light an extreme fundamentalist Christian view, this insider’s perspective offers hope to people grappling with the aftereffects of a cult-like movement often known as “Reparative Therapy.” The movement assumes that going from gay to straight is easily changeable and change-worthy, despite decades of psycho/sexual research to the contrary. Although it did not succeed in making the author—a Southern Baptist who attended an ex-gay ministry at a young age—straight, it did undermine his self-esteem and confuse him significantly, thus leading him to pursue an advanced degree in sexology in order to help others in similar positions. Offering a detailed comparison of the ex-gay world and the phenomenon known as Religious Abuse, this manual shares a personal journey through the hopeless mistreatment and manipulative system of ex-gay ministries and the recovery process involved in regaining strength, acceptance, and self-worth.

Book The Moral Psychology of Guilt

Download or read book The Moral Psychology of Guilt written by Bradford Cokelet and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most Western societies, guilt is widely regarded as a vital moral emotion. In addition to playing a central role in moral development and progress, many take the capacity to feel guilt as a defining feature of morality itself: no truly moral person escapes the pang of guilt when she has done something wrong. But proponents of guilt's importance face important challenges, such as distinguishing healthy from pathological forms of guilt, and accounting for the fact that not all cultures value guilt in the same way, if at all. In this volume, philosophers and psychologists come together to think more systematically about the nature and value of guilt. The book begins with chapters on the biological origins and psychological nature of guilt and moves on to discuss the culturally enriched conceptions of guilt and its value that we find in various eastern and western philosophic traditions. In addition, numerous chapters discuss healthy or morally valuable forms guilt and their pathological or irrational shadows.

Book No Impact Man

    Book Details:
  • Author : Colin Beavan
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2009-09-01
  • ISBN : 1429952571
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book No Impact Man written by Colin Beavan and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill McKibben meets Bill Bryson in this seriously engaging look at one man's decision to put his money where his mouth is and go off the grid for one year—while still living in New York City—to see if it's possible to make no net impact on the environment. In No Impact Man, a guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, and generally becomes a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons–loving wife along for the ride. And that's just the beginning. In other words, no trash, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no air-conditioning, no television . . . What would it be like to try to live a no-impact lifestyle? Is it possible? Could it catch on? Is living this way more satisfying or less satisfying? Harder or easier? Is it worthwhile or senseless? Are we all doomed or can our culture reduce the barriers to sustainable living so it becomes as easy as falling off a log? These are the questions at the heart of this whole mad endeavor, via which Colin Beavan hopes to explain to the rest of us how we can realistically live a more "eco-effective" and by turns more content life in an age of inconvenient truths.
