Book excerpt: Dance as though no one is watching you Love as though you have never been hurt Sing as though no one can hear you Live as though heaven is here on earth - Anonymous For millions of women, the words "You have breast cancer" are a harsh reality. For Black women, those words hit especially hard as the mortality rate for Black women is staggering. It's a battle Karen Eubanks Jackson knows all too well. A FOUR-time breast cancer survivor, Jackson has used her triumphs, tragedies and lessons learned to inspire others. Now, she’s sharing it all in this evocative new book, In the Company of My Sisters. First diagnosed in 1993, Jackson knew little about the disease, despite the fact that she’d had a relative die from breast cancer. It was, after all, a silent shame the family kept. Determined to educate herself, Jackson devoured herself in research. And when she couldn’t find information or support specifically for Black women, she set out to fill that void, creating Sisters Network Inc., the only national survivorship-run organization designed to increase local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the Black community. In the Company of My Sisters is Jackson’s story. Her truth in battling the disease for 27 years. How she survived. How she succeeded and built a national sisterhood of Black breast cancer survivors. How she hopes to continue inspiring and educating others along the way. The book is filled with personal experiences and observations from Jackson as well as other survivors, this book will give insight into what shaped Jackson into a woman able to beat breast cancer – again and again and again. And with all the valuable information Jackson has accumulated over the years, the book will also serve as a one-stop resource for all your breast cancer questions. For those battling breast cancer, those walking the journey with survivors, and those who just want to educate themselves, In the Company of My Sisters will inspire you by the beauty and strength of the human spirit and why Jackson has made it her life’s mission change the course of the narrative surrounding the disease and help Black women take action to beat breast cancer.

Book Insane Sisters

Download or read book Insane Sisters written by Gregg Andrews and published by University of Missouri. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insane Sisters is the extraordinary tale of two sisters, Mary Alice Heinbach and Euphemia B. Koller, and their seventeen- year property dispute against the nation's leading cement corporation—the Atlas Portland Cement Company. In 1903, Atlas built a plant on the border of the small community of Ilasco, located just outside Hannibal—home of the infamous cave popularized in Mark Twain's most acclaimed novels. The rich and powerful Atlas quickly appointed itself as caretaker of Twain's heritage and sought to take control of Ilasco. However, its authority was challenged in 1910 when Heinbach inherited her husband's tract of land that formed much of the unincorporated town site. On grounds that Heinbach's husband had been in the advanced stages of alcoholism when she married him the year before, some of Ilasco's political leaders and others who had ties to Atlas challenged the will, charging Heinbach with undue influence. To help fight against the local lawyers and politicians who wanted Atlas to own the land, Heinbach enlisted the help of her shrewd and combative sister, Euphemia Koller, by making her co-owner of the tract. In a complex case that went to the Missouri Supreme Court four times, the sisters fiercely sought to hang on to the tract. However, in 1921 the county probate court imposed a guardianship over Heinbach and a circuit judge ordered a sheriff's sale of the property. After Atlas purchased the tract, Koller waged a lonely battle to overturn the sale and expose the political conspiracies that had led to Ilasco's conversion into a company town. Her efforts ultimately resulted in her court- ordered confinement in 1927 to Missouri's State Hospital Number One for the Insane, where she remained until her death at age sixty-eight. Insane Sisters traces the dire consequences the sisters suffered and provides a fascinating look at how the intersection of gender, class, and law shaped the history and politics of Ilasco. The book also sheds valuable new light on the wider consolidation of corporate capitalism and the use of guardianships and insanity to punish unconventional women in the early twentieth century.

Book Keeping My Sister s Secrets

Download or read book Keeping My Sister s Secrets written by Beezy Marsh and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eva, Peggy and Kathleen were sisters born into a close-knit working class family, living in a tiny terraced house in a street so rough the police would only walk down it in pairs. As they grew up between the wars, they dreamed of escaping their violent father and the crime-ridden slums of Waterloo. Peggy was a studious girl so appalled by conditions in the factories that she became a Communist. Beautiful Kathleen married an abusive man and later - during the Second World War - fell in love with a GI. Feisty Eva became a pickpocket as a child so she could help their mother put food on the table - and never lost her rebellious streak, or her desire to protect her family by whatever means necessary. As the years pass the sisters all lived close together, sharing each other's lives, supporting each other through hard times. Keeping My Sister's Secrets is a rich, moving story of three sisters fighting to survive through decades of social upheaval, their love for each other the one constant in a changing world.

Download or read book Soul Sisters Come on to My House written by Her Soul Sister and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often in this world, hatred, violence, and ugliness saturate our twenty-four-hour news cycle, capture our attention on city streets, and stain our view of human kind. But kindness, love, mercy, and compassion are stronger than all this negativity and evil combined. In this inspiring collection of stories, Susan Freire-Korn shares how individual women have overcome adversity to emerge stronger and more courageous than ever before. Written by three African American women, three Caucasian women, and three Hispanic women, these tales share how kindness can transcend our basic human differences and bring unity to our lives regardless of culture or race. Each woman offers a unique and uplifting tale of how they suffered through sometimes years of despair and hardship, but never gave up on their desire for a better life. Whether they endured teenage pregnancy, alcoholism, and domestic abuse or loneliness, depression, and low self-esteem, these women prove that no matter the circumstances of chance or culture, the human spirit can triumph and emerge stronger than before. An excellent reference for those seeking to understand cultural differences as well as for those looking for encouragement in their own lives, Soul Sisters, Come on to My House beautifully shows how opening your heart and your mind will make the world a better place for all.
