Download or read book Grace Desolation written by Sean Bentley and published by Cune Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace & Desolation channels the rebellion of Bentley's rock 'n roll inside the teenager's carefully honed craft. These poems were written from what was then the safe vantage point of the US as we, as a nation, slumbered in the aftermath of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the First Gulf War that followed in 1991. Most of Bentley's poems are about the quiet personal dramas of ordinary life, local visits to overgrown bunkers from WWII, traveling in Italy, remembering the holocaust. A single poem recalls the Gulf War, just a few lines. Yet they have colored my memory of Bentley's book and made me think of the way that far removed foreign events are not really foreign, and not far removed.

Book excerpt: In this unique and significant addition to Vietnam studies, Memories of a Lost War analyzes the poems written by American veterans, protest poets, and Vietnamese, within political, aesthetic, and cultural contexts. Drawing on a wealth of material often published in small presses and journals, the book highlights the horrors of war and the continuing traumas of veterans in post-Vietnam America. In its inclusion of Vietnamese perspectives, the book marks a departure from earlier works that have largely concentrated on Vietnam as a war rather than a country.

Book The Cambridge Companion to the Poetry of the First World War

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Poetry of the First World War written by Santanu Das and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poetry of the First World War remains a singularly popular and powerful body of work. This Companion brings together leading scholars in the field to re-examine First World War poetry in English at the start of the centennial commemoration of the war. It offers historical and critical contexts, fresh readings of the important soldier-poets, and investigations of the war poetry of women and civilians, Georgians and Anglo-American modernists and of poetry from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the former British colonies. The volume explores the range and diversity of this body of work, its rich afterlife and the expanding horizons and reconfiguration of the term 'First World War Poetry'. Complete with a detailed chronology and guide to further reading, the Companion concludes with a conversation with three poets - Michael Longley, Andrew Motion and Jon Stallworthy - about why and how the war and its poetry continue to resonate with us.

Book Collected Poems of John Updike 1953 1993

Download or read book Collected Poems of John Updike 1953 1993 written by John Updike and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The idea of verse, of poetry, has always, during forty years spent working primarily in prose, stood at my elbow, as a standing invitation to the highest kind of verbal exercise—the most satisfying, the most archaic, the most elusive of critical control. In hotel rooms and airplanes, on beaches and Sundays, at junctures of personal happiness or its opposite, poetry has comforted me with its hope of permanence, its packaging of flux.” Thus John Updike writes in introducing his Collected Poems. The earliest poems here date from 1953, when Updike was twenty-one, and the last were written after he turned sixty. Almost all of those published in his five previous collections are included, with some revisions. Arranged in chronological order, the poems constitute, as he says, “the thread backside of my life’s fading tapestry.” An ample set of notes at the back of the book discusses some of the hidden threads, and expatiates upon a number of fine points. Nature—tenderly intricate, ruthlessly impervious—is a constant and ambiguous presence in these poems, along with the social observation one would expect in a novelist. No occasion is too modest or too daily to excite metaphysical wonder, or to provoke a lyrical ingenuity of language. Yet even the wittiest of the poems are rooted to the ground of experience and fact. “Seven Odes to Seven Natural Processes” attempt to explicate the physical world with a directness seldom attempted in poetry. Several longer poems—“Leaving Church Early,” “Midpoint”—use autobiography to proclaim the basic strangeness of existence.
