Book excerpt: Get ready to focus on the single most important thing you can do to live a happy, healthy, and successful life: BELONG. “Read this book, do what it says, and discover exactly where you fit in.” —John Mackey, Co-founder and CEO, Whole Foods Market “If you want to belong, read this book.” —Deepak Chopra, MD “From the moment I opened this book I was hooked. This book is caring and tender, challenging and action-driven. It is now on my recommendation list.” —Esther Perel, author of Mating in Captivity and The State of Affairs, host of Where Should We Begin? podcast How is it that the internet connects us to a world of people, yet so many of us feel more isolated than ever? That we have hundreds, even thousands of friends on social media, but not a single person to truly confide in? Radha Agrawal calls this “community confusion,” and in Belong she offers every reader a blueprint to find their people and build and nurture community, because connectedness—as more and more studies show—is our key to happiness, fulfillment, and success. A book that’s equal parts inspiring and interactive, and packed with prompts, charts, quizzes, and full-color illustrations, Belong takes readers on a two-part journey. Part one is Going IN—a gentle but intentional process of self-discovery and finding out your true energy levels and VIA (values, interests, and abilities). Part two is Going OUT—building on all that you’ve learned about yourself to find those few special people who feed your soul, and discovering, or creating, the ever-widening groups that align with your aims and desires. As the Co-founder and CEO of the popular global morning dance community Daybreaker, Radha Agrawal developed an immense offline community with her team of Community Catalysts in 25 cities and on a dozen college campuses around the world by creating a physical space for people to connect, self-express, sweat, and dance. Now, Radha offers the life-changing strategies, tips, and tricks for making friends that will light your fire and give you the exhale of “Ahh, I’m home.” “Radha has written a book that’s fun to read, easy to digest, and embodies deep wisdom. This isn’t just a book I’m endorsing. This is a book that I want to buy multiple copies of because I have so many friends and acquaintances that will benefit from it. It’s the first book I couldn't wait to finish reading it so I could give my copy to one of my friends to read the same day.” —Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos and author of Delivering Happiness

Book excerpt: This book is about all of the kinds of relationships people can have. It is a very insightful book about how relationships emerge. But it is also about how indispensable they are to our ongoing sense of being who we are in the worlds we inhabit. We have relationships with various people. But we also have relationships with our possessions, with our pets, and with our pens and car keys. We have relationships with the foods we eat, the places we go, and the diversions we take. We have relationships with the news we attend to, the gossip we consume, and the places we are familiar with. We have relationships with our clothes, our lotions and potions, our grooming equipment, our computers and our snow shovels. Taken together, all of the relationships we have had, have today, and will have in the future attach us to our worlds in an admixture of pushes and pulls on our attention and our behavior. Metaphorically, it might visually look much like an intricate circular spider web, with us individually stuck at the core. We use the singular relationship here because we want to explore what it is that all relationships have in common: relationship. Relationships are sticky. They are far easier to fall into than to escape from. They are often demanding, requiring our attention when we wanted to devote our attention elsewhere. The drama of misplaced keys or a balky computer can take over our lives. We have hopes for certain relationships. We can be disappointed in how they turn out. But most of the myriad relationships that affect our lives just sort of happen. If they dont serve our purposes as we think we deserve, we drop them. A piece of clothing that just doesnt look right in the light can be dropped. Thats something you cant do with your own baby. You have a relationship with your body. If youre rich, you can get a remodeling job. If youre not, you may be stuck with the body youve got. Some relationships bring us down. Other relationships lift us up. In this book, you will learn how to create the kinds of relationships you need to get to where you want to go. The relationship you have with yourself is key. This book reveals to you how, if you get that right, most of the other relationships you live in, and by, will fall into place.

Download or read book I Belong Here written by Anita Sethi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Books Are My Bag Readers Award for Non-fiction Shortlisted for the 2021 Wainwright Prize "I knew in every bone of my body, in every fibre of my being, that I had to report what had happened, not only for myself but to help stop anyone else having to go through what I did. I knew I could not remain silent, or still, I could not stop walking through the world." A journey of reclamation through the natural landscapes of the North, brilliantly exploring identity, nature, place and belonging. Beautifully written and truly inspiring, I Belong Here heralds a powerful and refreshing new voice in nature writing. Anita Sethi was on a journey through Northern England when she became the victim of a race-hate crime. The crime was a vicious attack on her right to exist in a place on account of her race. After the event Anita experienced panic attacks and anxiety. A crushing sense of claustrophobia made her long for wide open spaces, to breathe deeply in the great outdoors. She was intent on not letting her experience stop her travelling freely and without fear. The Pennines - known as 'the backbone of Britain' runs through the north and also strongly connects north with south, east with west - it's a place of borderlands and limestone, of rivers and 'scars', of fells and forces. The Pennines called to Anita with a magnetic force; although a racist had told her to leave, she felt drawn to further explore the area she regards as her home, to immerse herself deeply in place. Anita's journey through the natural landscapes of the North is one of reclamation, a way of saying that this is her land too and she belongs in the UK as a brown woman, as much as a white man does. Her journey transforms what began as an ugly experience of hate into one offering hope and finding beauty after brutality. Anita transforms her personal experience into one of universal resonance, offering a call to action, to keep walking onwards. Every footstep taken is an act of persistence. Every word written against the rising tide of hate speech, such as this book, is an act of resistance.

Download or read book Justice for Lorraine written by Conrad Cohen and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conrad Cohen had just finished a shift as New York City Police officer Nov. 25, 1972, when he walked into a bar and saw her Lorraine. She was on vacation from Richmond, Virginia, where she lived and worked. Less than two years later, the two were married, and for the next thirty-eight years, their love for each other never wavered. They saw the world together, enjoying fifteen glorious cruises. Even after Lorraine had a colon operation and a stroke, they still made the most out of life's daily adventures. They were hopeful her health would improve, but she was diagnosed with dementia with psychosis in 2005. The diagnosis didn't have to be a death sentence, but it would set in motion a series of events that would leave Conrad equating the word doctor with killer. He learned that when a loved one enters a hospital, it's the doctors' turf, and they do what they want. Lorraine died December 31, 2009, after she was given medication that the Food and Drug Administration had warned could kill elderly people with dementia. She didn't need to die, but there can still be Justice for Lorraine.
