Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbian: And Other Poems During these years new scenes and new sights have come up before him - the Centennial of which he has written, and is to be found in this volume has come and passed, western scenes have been traced out, the quadrennial is now upon us, and all together the poet has reason to congratulate himself upon the very many things that have come before him to aid his inspiration. How well he has portrayed these scenes in this little volume is for the reader to say, after having perused these verses, though it may not be amiss in him to say that under all the circumstances combined, he feels confident that no one will condemn or severely criticise these writings if thoroughly read and understood. If, by the perusal of these poems it should bring happiness to the reader and thereby help make the pathway of life more pleasant, the author will be more than repaid. Book The Origins of Criticism

Download or read book The Origins of Criticism written by Andrew Ford and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By "literary criticism" we usually mean a self-conscious act involving the technical and aesthetic appraisal, by individuals, of autonomous works of art. Aristotle and Plato come to mind. The word "social" does not. Yet, as this book shows, it should--if, that is, we wish to understand where literary criticism as we think of it today came from. Andrew Ford offers a new understanding of the development of criticism, demonstrating that its roots stretch back long before the sophists to public commentary on the performance of songs and poems in the preliterary era of ancient Greece. He pinpoints when and how, later in the Greek tradition than is usually assumed, poetry was studied as a discipline with its own principles and methods. The Origins of Criticism complements the usual, history-of-ideas approach to the topic precisely by treating criticism as a social as well as a theoretical activity. With unprecedented and penetrating detail, Ford considers varying scholarly interpretations of the key texts discussed. Examining Greek discussions of poetry from the late sixth century B.C. through the rise of poetics in the late fourth, he asks when we first can recognize anything like the modern notions of literature as imaginative writing and of literary criticism as a special knowledge of such writing. Serving as a monumental preface to Aristotle's Poetics, this book allows readers to discern the emergence, within the manifold activities that might be called criticism, of the historically specific discourse on poetry that has shaped subsequent Western approaches to literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medici in Florence, after the restoration of 1512. Carafulla, historical Jester, leading the (Venetian) Ship of Fools in the pageant through the streets of Florence in the Midsummer festival of St John the Baptist,1514. The antics of the jesters have meaning. This is gradually unfolded during the journey of the ship in the book. It is done by focusing on the visual and narrative riddles of the jesters and other characters analysed with the help of a background on the festive tradition (Carnival) in Europe, and of published and unpublished (personal letters of the Medici) material. Gradually the pranks and jests reveal earnest and controversial contents which reflect on political relationships between Rome (the Medici pope, Leo X), Florence (the member of the Medici family ruling there) and the Republic of Venice (provider of fleets and reformist thought). Rumours, humours and emulations between Florence Rome and Venice.
