Book excerpt: Weeds have been identified as the major agronomic problem associated with arable crop production in conservation agriculture systems. Manual weeding and hand pulling are by far the most common weed control methods used in maize production, whilst chemical weed control is relatively uncommon in Zimbabwe's smallholder farming systems. In Zimbabwe, the key to conservation agriculture revolves around weed control. An experiment was done to evaluate the effect of manual and chemical weed control strategies on (i) weed density and biomass, (ii) total labour requirements for weed control, (iii) maize biomass and grain yield and (iv) the economics of weed control. The trials were done at four sites in Zimbabwe's Highveld area in the 2007/8 rainy season. Results from the different sites show that weed abundance was not significantly affected by the different weed control strategies that were used in this study. However the different weed control strategies resulted in differences in labour requirements and economic returns. This study showed that using tank mixes of glyphosate and atrazine at planting is the most effective and economically feasible weed control strategy.

It is grown throughout the world for human and animal consumption. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates the demand of maize for human and animal consumption will increase by nearly 300 million tonnes by 2030 which does not include the increase in demand for bio-fuel production. Maize being a rainy season and widely spaced crop gets infested with variety of weeds and subjected to heavy weed competition. Rainy season (kharif) maize suffers heavy yield losses due to weed infestation owing to congenial environmental condition for luxurious weed growth coupled with wider row planting and slow growth at the early stage. Besides chemical and cultural methods of weed management, intercropping of pulses with maize play vital role in reducing weed infestation.

Book excerpt: Maize is a widely grown cereal after rice and wheat and contributes almost 5% to the global dietary supply. In the Eastern Gangetic Plains (EGP) including India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, maize is an emerging cash crop, because of its high yield potentiality and also the favorable climatic conditions which allow maize production round the year. In Bangladesh, area and production of maize are escalating due to the increasing demand for poultry, livestock, and fish feed, and fodder for animals and starch industries in the region. Presently, more than 90% of maize is planted by manual dibbling following 5,Äì6 intensive tillage, which increases the cost of cultivation. The conservation agricultural (CA)-based new agricultural practices could overcome those above challenges. CA is cost-effective and environmentally friendly; however, weeds are one of the key challenges in the system. The chapter described the uses of herbicides in different ways of combinations to make effective weed control in CA-based maize to achieve potential production and profits by reducing the intensive pressure of manual weeding. The efficient and right use of pre-plant/sowing, pre- and post-emergence herbicides and their combination may be the best way for effective control of weeds in maize production.

Weed problem is one of the major barriers responsible for low productivity of maize because weeds compete with the crop for moisture, nutrients, space and light. Moreover, they increase production cost, harbour insects-pests and plant diseases, decreases quality of farm produce and reduce the value of the land. Weed control through use of herbicides assumes a greater significance due to accessibility and selective and quick action. Herbicides use in cropland provides weed free condition from very beginning, increases crop yield, improves crop quality and reduces production cost.
