Book excerpt: Students from China experience greater levels of difficulty in the transition to American higher education compared to domestic students and other international students. They struggle with language issues, as well as social and academic acculturation challenges. A pathway program, developed in 2009 by a consortium of American colleges and universities, aimed to provide a transitional path to higher education in the U.S. for Chinese students. Students begin their program in China for fall and spring terms, and those who successfully complete those terms arrive in the United States for a Summer Bridge program aimed at acclimating students to life at an American university. This qualitative program evaluation examined faculty, staff and student experience in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Summer Bridge program in the transition process of Chinese students to American higher education. The study fills a gap in the literature on the benefits of extended orientation programs for Chinese international students. Historical documentation; course syllabi; student satisfaction survey data; and interviews with faculty, staff, and students who were involved in the program, were used to inform the results. The Summer Bridge program was successful in making students more confident when they enrolled in the fall. Students were more comfortable with the social setting as well as the academic setting. One limitation of the program was the lack of cultural diversity. Students were less inclined to practice their English speaking skills among fellow Chinese students. This study confirms that an extended orientation program for Chinese students improved their transition to American higher education.

Book excerpt: The U.S. is the leading nation for international students to pursue higher education; the majority of whom are from countries with significant differences in culture and language from American students. As such, many international students start higher education in ESL support programs. While on the surface international students supposedly add cultural and linguistic diversity to American higher education by contributing to the internationalization of campuses, international students' transition into U.S. life and academe is often fraught with challenges including culture shock, adjusting to the new environment and society, adjustment to norms of academic performance, acquisition of academic and language skills, and negotiating chilly campus climates. Such factors can affect academic success, social/cultural acclimation, and even personal/ethnic identity. However, little is researched about international ESL students' transitions into U.S. higher education. This study employs qualitative research with semi-structured interview and grounded theory as analytical technique and aims to rectify the existing research literature limitation by identifying factors that facilitate and inhibit social, cultural, and academic transitions among international ESL students that best serve and accelerate their academic career in the United States.

Di Tommaso and Spinner found out that integration into social networks is the best predictor of lower levels of social loneliness. Universities provide support for international students and it is intended to facilitate an optimal (from the point of view of the universities) academic and social adjustment, however, causing boring and lonely social life ‘outside the classroom’ and feeling a lack of belonging contribute to their sense of alienation in the host society. Due to the heavy study load and stress and because of lack of time, international students tend to have more in-door activities. Because of the developed technologies and internet, most of them prefer to communicate through social media: especially when they encounter problems in their daily life, they tend to search solutions via social channels on internet. Moreover, the media channels that The Hague University of Applied Sciences (hereinafter HHS) uses now seems not to be adequate for integration. HHS uses media tools such as blackboard and emails to communicate with the students, and students could theoretically build up certain conversation via blackboard. However, students consider both channels as “formal” channels that are one-way communication channels instead of desired social channels which is two-way communication. In other words, students expect an effective mediator that can help them to understand and to adapt to the new studying and living environment. Hence, it is important to develop effective media channels that will contribute to integration among international students at HHS by providing recommendations for improvement in media channels and exploring possible solutions to the problem. Project Objective: To develop a communication plan aimed at integrating international students at the Hague University by providing recommendations for improvement of media channels. Advice Question: How to use media channels in order to enhance integration of the international students at The Hague University of Applied Sciences? Research Question: What are the factors that contribute to establishing of an effective media platform in order to improve the integration of international students?

Book excerpt: Though numerous studies have investigated the adaptation of Chinese international students in the U.S., few studies have talked about the influence of their experiencing a new academic culture. Following the Confucian tradition, Chinese academic culture canonizes education as the only approach to being a better person, and it can be achieved purely by an individual's effort. Together with the moral indication of performance and the highly competitive educational system, Chinese students become obligated to achieve academic success, sensitive to negative evaluation, and habituated to a unique learning culture that is characterized by silence. Their unique academic culture that is distinct from the Western educational tradition may contribute to many mismatch problems. Here we focused on learning culture mismatch and language mismatch. From two studies using archival data and self-collected data, we found that: a) Chinese international students have larger learning culture mismatch and language mismatch than Western International students and American students; b) They also have lower psychological wellbeing than students from Western origins; c) Learning culture mismatch and language mismatch make direct contributions to the lower psychological wellbeing of Chinese international students, and learning culture mismatch is also associated with lower academic performance; and d) social self-efficacy partly mediated the effect of learning culture mismatch and language mismatch, indicating the interactive nature of cross-cultural adaptation. We proposed that social-oriented academic motivation may be a possible source of academic culture mismatch and possible interventions to alleviate the mismatch problems were suggested.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The language and communication skills of foreign students have long been a concern in U.S. universities. The majority of U.S. universities require foreign students for whom English is not their native language to take English language proficiency tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as part of admission requirements. Some universities have included interventions to increase the success of Chinese students against their struggle to understand English course content. One such program is the Gateway to Successful Tomorrow Bilingual Degree Program (GST). The gap to be addressed on this study was that the effectiveness of GST has not been formally evaluated among foreign students particularly overseas Chinese students studying at U.S. universities. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the GST among overseas Chinese students studying at U.S. universities as measured through students’ grade point averages (GPA) and TOEFL scores. The theoretical framework that guided this study was the Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. The quantitative study used a causal comparative design to gather quantitative data from student achievement records and TOEFL scores. Pearson’s correlation analysis and analysis of variance were conducted to predict if underlying relationships exist among variables. Key findings of the analyses showed that GST students had a significantly higher GPA than non-GST student. However, results also indicated that there was no evidence that the GST program significantly improved TOEFL scores. The GST program had an overall positive impact on the international Chinese students’ academic performance and with continued research international students stand to gain even more from this program.

However, there is often a mismatch between these scores and the initial experiences of international students in both academic and social contexts. Drawing on a digital ethnography of Chinese international students’ first semester languaging practices, this book examines their challenges, needs and successes on their initial languaging journeys in higher education. It analyzes how they use their rich multilingual and multi-modal communicative repertories to facilitate languaging across contexts, in order to suggest how university support systems might better serve the needs of multilingual international students.
