Book Improving the Contribution of Protected Areas to Quality of Life in Rural and Regional Communities

Download or read book Improving the Contribution of Protected Areas to Quality of Life in Rural and Regional Communities written by Mateusz Wolnicki and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research addresses the fundamental question of how rural and remote communities in Australia's rangelands value the contribution of the natural environment to their wellbeing and how these community values differ from the environmental values ascribed by natural resource managers and policy makers. Based on ethnographic theories of social constructivism and complex adaptive systems, the research develops a methodology for a better way of understanding how community's value the environment and draws on the National Reserve System in Far Western New South Wales as a case study for its application. Protected areas are special places on land and sea which are managed for conservation purposes. They are considered to have biodiversity and/or cultural values that require protection and preservation. In Australia they are often designated national parks, nature reserves or state recreation areas, whilst most are public, some are privately owned. As the provision and management of protected areas is strongly influenced by the perceptions of managers and policy makers from outside host communities, it is crucial that managers and policy makers ensure that there is a fusion of interest between their own perceptions of the benefits of environmental conservation and those experienced by the host community. This common purpose is necessary to ensure that conservation is accepted and fostered by host communities and the wider public. By identifying and ameliorating the divergence between these 'internal' community ascribed values, and the value ascribed by managers and policy makers, the research has provided the basis for policies to enhance the effectiveness of environmental conservation planning and management. The research methodology utilises collected and compiled secondary data to establish central themes and values that are being represented both by the 'internal' community and 'external' policy makers. It then develops and tests a device that provides an example of how community values can be elicited. The results provide new insights into the capacity of current Australian environmental management mechanisms to build productive and resilient social - ecological relationships, as well as an assessment of the condition of these relationships.

Book Protected Areas and Regional Development in Europe

Download or read book Protected Areas and Regional Development in Europe written by Ingo Mose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While originally created as reserves for beautiful landscapes and endangered species, protected areas in Europe were subsequently used as a means to preserve whole ecosystems, with restrictions on human activities and impacts. More recently, protected areas are also being considered as instruments for regional development, particularly in marginal regions facing severe economic and socio-cultural problems. Contrary to previous conservation-focused policies, new approaches aim to blend conservation and development functions, making protected areas real 'living landscapes' and integrating activities such as agriculture, forestry, handicrafts, tourism and education with the conservation and sustainability aspects. The past decade has seen a marked increase in these innovative and dynamic types of protected areas. However, the policies of individual European countries are very varied. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between protected areas and regional development policies, both in theory and practice. Illustrated with a wide range of case studies from across Europe, it compares the different concepts, strategies and instruments being used. In conclusion, it suggests the most innovative and successful ways to use protected areas for regeneration and sustainable regional development.

Book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories

Download or read book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories written by Nigel Dudley and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording, and classifying protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation. These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and management approaches.

Book Social and Economic Benefits of Protected Areas

Download or read book Social and Economic Benefits of Protected Areas written by Marianne Kettunen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas (PAs) contain biodiversity and ecosystems of high conservation value. In addition, these areas provide a range of benefits, both direct and indirect, to our societies and economies, i.e. so called ecosystem services. These services include, for example, an ecosystem's ability to regulate floods and climate, purify water, secure the pollination of crops, and create opportunities for recreation, culture and tourism. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the socio-economic benefits of PAs and PA networks and provides step-by-step practical guidance on identifying, assessing and valuing the various ecosystem services and related benefits provided by PAs. It also aims to improve the communication of PA benefits to different stakeholders and the general public. It is shown that identifying and valuing the socio-economic benefits of PAs can be beneficial for several reasons. Demonstrating socio-economic importance of a protected site can significantly increase political and stakeholder support for the site and resolve conflicts between different interest groups. This can lead to positive changes in policies and decision-making. Insights on PA benefits are also needed to identify a combination of actions and land use practices that best support the sustainable and equitable utilisation of these benefits, while retaining a site’s conservation goals. Finally, demonstrating different benefits can help to discover alternative and sustainable sources for financing the management of PAs.

Book Ecosystem Services Sustainable Rural Development and Protected Areas

Download or read book Ecosystem Services Sustainable Rural Development and Protected Areas written by M ́onica de Castro-Pardo and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhancing social and economic development while preserving nature is one of the major challenges for humankind in the current century. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment showed an alarming degradation of ecosystems and exacerbated poverty for many groups of people across the world due to unprecedented changes in ecosystems caused by human activities in the 20th century. Sustainable Rural Development is key to maintaining active local communities in rural and semi-natural areas, avoiding depopulation, and preserving high-ecological-value sites, including protected areas. Establishing protected areas is the most common strategy to preserve biodiversity around the world with the advantage of promoting the supply of ecosystem services. However, depending how it affects economic opportunities and the access to natural resources, it can either attract or repel human settlements. The convergence of development and conservation requires decision-making processes capable of aligning the needs and expectations of rural communities and the goals of biodiversity conservation. The articles compiled in this Special Issue (nine research papers and two review papers) make important contributions to this challenge from different approaches, disciplines and regions in the world.

Book Protected Area Management

Download or read book Protected Area Management written by Graeme Worboys and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents, for the first time in a single text, the multi-disciplinary task of managing protected areas. An applied text, it presents numerous case studies and snapshots that demonstrate the stunning variety of Australian protected areas. It focuses on the conservation future of Australia's outstanding natural and cultural heritage, which is displayed in reserves such as Kosciuszko, Kakadu, Shark Bay, South West Tasmania, and the Great Barrier Reef. The book has three parts: Part A explains the environmental, social, political, and historical context of management. Part B examines in depth the main principles and practices of such management. These chapters cover a variety of areas: using, obtaining, and managing information; planning, administration; economics; natural heritage; cultural heritage; threatening processes; incidents; tourism and visitor management; working with the community; indigenous people and protected areas; conservation at a landscape scale; and managing for the future. Part C is a summary of information on the protected areas in each Australian state and territory. This innovative book will help students and practitioners improve the management of protected areas in Australia and elsewhere, Of value to anyone with an active interest in the conservation and improved management of protected areas, the book will interest and assist park neighbors, park visitors, rural communities, politicians, conservationists, and indigenous peoples. It will also be of benefit to protected area managers around the world, given that generic issues faced by Australian managers are common to most other areas. Recognizing this, the book has been endorsed as a joint IUCN (The World Conservation Union) initiative.

Book PROTECTED AREAS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Download or read book PROTECTED AREAS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES written by Massimo Sargolini and published by . This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of an applied research on protected areas, with the aim of exploring the role of protected areas in a time of global change (climate, social).0The book explores the means of protected areas management, with reference to global strategies for risk reduction and territorial cohesion. In doing so, the book examines the extraordinary role that local communities, suitably sensitized and oriented to co-planning as recommended by the European Landscape Convention (2001), could play in nature conservation, and, by both increasing the quality of life of local inhabitants and by improving their socio-economic conditions, in increasing the territory?s attractiveness. Moreover, the book presents interviews with international experts on the management of protected areas and on local planning; and the results of international researches whose follow-up has enhanced the unexpressed potential of fragile territories, as is the case with protected areas. The book aims to be a reference for researchers, practitioners and policymakers involved in territorial planning and in the management of natural and cultural resources.

Book Protected Areas and Indigeneous Communities

Download or read book Protected Areas and Indigeneous Communities written by Azra Musavi and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with protected area-people interface in Bori Wildife Sanctuary and Melghat Tiger Reserve located in Satpura range of Central Indian Highlands. These forests are mostly inhabited by Gond, Korku, and Thatia tribes, a small population of agro-pastoral community and other backward classes, which have moved into these forests from adjoining areas in search of pastures for their large herds of livestock. Bori in northern Sutpura has moist deciduous forest while, Melghat in southern Satpura hills has dry deciduous forest. Both protected areas are renowned for tigers as well as for a rich faunal and floral diversity. These forests are under increasing anthropogenic pressure due to people living in and around the two protected areas. The book looks at three aspects which are a challenge for protected area management. One, it explores the web of both tribal and non-tribal life, as the intervention of market economy and increasing population have led to change in the basis of the local subsistence economy. Secondly, it tries to assess the extent of impact of biotic dependence on the forests of both protected areas. Thirdly, and most importantly, it examines the park-people conflicts and their implications for the management of both protected areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas are at the base of the most national and international conservation strategies. Due to the many unpredictable elements in ecology matters, each protected area requires a case-specific set of guidelines but a common issue is how to cope with human interaction. The management of protected areas is replete with challenges and the only way to gain understanding and achieve greater management possibilities is to exchange experiences and knowledge. Environmental managers are aware of that and together with scientists are looking for more modern and better solutions, both with respect to natural resources and human interactions in many issues regarding nature protection. This publication presents reviews and research results on protected areas management, as well as 12 case studies derived from around the world with the aim of improving management effectiveness of the protected areas.
