While it is true that some degree of teacher turnover in schools is both healthy and inevitable, the exodus of large numbers of teachers over time diminishes the capacity of a school to serve its students and creates new problems related to recruiting and inducting new teachers. States and districts are experimenting with a variety of programs to encourage retention. One body of research highlights the importance of a supportive working environment. This newsletter issue notes suggested strategies for five factors: (1) Time; (2) Principal Leadership; (3) Empowerment and Professional Influence; (4) Professional Development; and (5) Curricular Resources. Although administrators have little control when teachers leave the classroom because of retirement, family responsibilities or health issues, but they can positively impact workplace conditions. Research indicates that when given adequate time to prepare, professional respect and appropriate support, teachers are more likely to remain in the profession. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine relationships between six supportive work conditions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and teacher retention in a school district in south Mississippi. This study examined work conditions including work environment, job fit, compensation and benefit, leadership support, assessment systems, and induction programs to the retention of teachers by experience, levels of education, career plans, gender and ethnic groups using a Teacher Retention Questionnaire. Also, this study examined the challenges and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teacher retention from data collected through teacher interviews via Google Meet. A total of 104 of 300 potential subjects participated in the study, constituting a 34.6% response rate for the questionnaire; 18 participants were interviewed. The results indicated no statistically significant difference of work conditions by ethnic group, years of experience, gender, level of education, and career plans. The study revealed that teachers perceived an increase in compensation and leadership support as the greatest impact on teacher retention. Teachers faced challenges such as teaching virtually, classroom management, limited resources, and lack of parent involvement. While, the COVID-19 pandemic brought on increased stress because of feeling unsafe, 89% of teachers reported not knowing anyone in the participating school district who left the profession as a result of the pandemic. By examining the work conditions and the impact of COVID-19, school leaders may improve teacher retention.

Book excerpt: My district in North Carolina is one of many across the country impacted by a shortage of teachers caused by attrition and fewer people entering the profession. Educational leaders must increase teacher retention to sufficiently staff their schools. Data on teacher turnover is largely based on surveys completed by exiting teachers. This study gathers perspectives from the teachers who stay, to better understand what has kept them in the profession. This approach proactively identified strategies to improve teacher job satisfaction to increase the number of teachers who remain at their current school. Q Methodology was used to determine the factors that are most important for job satisfaction to teachers at a comprehensive high school in central North Carolina. Two distinct factor groups emerged from the data: Monarchy High School, named due to the significance of site-based school leadership and Federation High School where collegial relationships with peers were central to remaining in the profession. Post-sort interviews provided insight to why teachers hold their beliefs. The findings of this study can be used by school leaders to develop a better understanding of how to intentionally design supportive working environments to increase teacher retention.

Book excerpt: This study identifies differences in perceptions between three stakeholder groups - principals, K-12 teachers, and parents - regarding the effect of workplace conditions on teacher attrition. An electronic questionnaire was sent to 15 of Utah's 41 school districts. Sampling efforts yielded completed surveys from 93 principals, 2003 teachers and 495 parents. All three groups agreed that workplace conditions are important, but the greatest disagreements occurred in perceptions of (a) teacher involvement in decision-making, (b) protection of teacher preparation time, (c) administration's management of student discipline, (d) adequacy of resource availability, (e) the degree to which a trusting and supportive school environment existed within the school, and (f) whether teachers' expectations were reasonable. Overall, principals believed that work conditions are relatively good for teachers, while many teachers disagreed with these perceptions. The study also examined factors that influence science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) university students' willingness to consider teaching as a career. A total of 4,743 university students majoring in STEM fields from Brigham Young University completed the survey (31%) and although very few of these students initially consider this profession, we identified four factors using predictive modeling that are strongly associated with these students' willingness to consider teaching and their belief that teaching might be their best career option. Results indicated that STEM university students were more likely to consider teaching when they believed teaching is something they would be good at, others encouraged them to be a teacher, when family encourages them to teach, and when teachers they know inspire them. Results from this study indicate that small salary bonuses would likely not entice students in STEM subjects to become teachers. Less impactful factors included gender and individual beliefs about the respectability of the profession. Additionally, this study found these students less likely to consider work conditions for teachers when making career choices. This study concludes with several implications that can inform and possibly improve the recruitment and leadership preparation programs at Institutes of Higher Education.
