Book Planning Housing and Infrastructure for Smart Villages

Download or read book Planning Housing and Infrastructure for Smart Villages written by Hemanta Doloi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 7.3 billion people currently live on the planet. Of these, 3.4 billion live in rural areas. In just a few regions—Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa—less than 50 per cent of poverty is now located in rural areas. But for the rest of the world's regions between 55 per cent and 80 per cent of the poor continue to live in the countryside. Progress is being made, but much of the knowhow needed is not disseminated outside of a small coterie of professionals who work in the area. With urban development attracting a great deal of attention lately, poorer rural areas deserve the same and new knowledge for empowerment of rural communities is urgently needed. This book provides an overview of current thinking and practices that have emerged over the last thirty years for uplifting rural communities in developing economies. Drawing on a body of knowledge across a spectrum of relevant disciplines, this book provides a range of innovative ideas for rural planning, housing and infrastructure development. Governments in many emerging economies, where rural poverty is often most acute, have attempted to improve livelihoods. Approaches and techniques that have been used for urban development are often not applicable to rural communities. Studies show that money allocated for rural development is often not effectively spent due to distance, lack of infrastructure, lack of education, poverty and other factors. Meanwhile, the gap in development between the city and country continues to grow, sometimes leading to social and political instability, in both developing and developed countries. This book seeks to provide a guidebook for meeting such challenges. Through in-depth enquiry of global practices and thinking about rural development, and selected case studies, the authors argue that careful consideration must be given to incorporating issues of resilience, resourcefulness and the involvement of communities at grassroots levels in realising the transformation of rural settlements into Smart Villages.

Book Shelter Settlement Development

Download or read book Shelter Settlement Development written by Lloyd Rodwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, Shelter, Settlement & Development presents a comprehensive and authoritative reappraisal of shelter, settlement and development policies and programs in third world countries. Drawing on the considerable research and advisory experience of an internationally distinguished group of contributors, it introduces new ideas on many themes such as spatial strategies, land policy, shanty town settlements, infrastructure standards and construction obstacles, intricacies of housing finance and household behaviour and preferences. Each facet of the study sums up what can be inferred from past experience: what worked and what did not, and why; what ideas are in currency; what policy choices lie ahead; and most important of all, what further changes are needed to achieve feasible and effective solutions, not quick fixes, or one-shot remedies. There is a special focus on the necessary learning processes so that whatever action is taken is likely to be self-correcting in the light of subsequent experience, reflection and changing circumstances. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of development studies, urban studies and planning, and public policy.

Book Housing for the Urban Poor in Developing Countries

Download or read book Housing for the Urban Poor in Developing Countries written by Brian C. Aldrich and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the world's population is now living in urban areas, and the urban population is growing at a higher rate than the rural population. In developing countries, large scale urbanization continues to support squatting and informal settlements in large cities. While some urban regimes have been able to halt or reverse this process, it is ongoing in most countries. The case studies examined in this book illustrate the extent of the problem and the variety of efforts being made to mitigate it. Slums and informal settlements in most cities suffer from extreme inequality and are deprived of basic services which are essential for human existence. For the urban poor, housing is a basic problem. If sustainable policies with respect to housing can be derived and implemented, the poor in the developing world will experience a significant improvement in their living standards. The book illustrates the profound but varied transformation taking place in the social organization of societies with regard to housing. It reviews myriad case studies from developing societies across continents, and it further compares several societies at once in terms of their strategies and cultural orientations towards providing housing for the poor.
