It was the height of the American involvement, and because officer casualties had been so great after the Tet Offensive of January 1968, all prior officer assignments were canceled. 1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett, originally on orders to the 101st Airborne Division, suddenly found himself at the “repo-depo” in Bien Hoa reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The unit had more helicopter support than any other unit in Vietnam. The soldiers carried lighter packs, more ammo and water because of the availability of rapid helicopter resupply. Immediate support from artillery, helicopter gunships and ARA (aerial rocket artillery) was only minutes away to support a firefight. Wounded troops could be medevaced even in dense jungle using “jungle penetrators.” It also meant that Bartlett’s platoon could deploy through helicopter combat assaults into hot LZs (landing zones) at a moment’s notice if an enemy force had been spotted. And they did. It was with extreme anxiety that Bartlett made his way to join his battalion and company – it was the worst of times to be a platoon leader in Vietnam, let alone a grunt serving in a combat unit. Bartlett also had to cope with personal issues of commitment to a war that was rapidly losing support not only back home but among the soldiers he was leading through the jungles of I Corps on “search and destroy” missions. Fifty years later, Bartlett’s vivid combat experiences are brought to light in a fast-moving, well-written, first-person narrative expressing the horror, fear, anguish, and sometimes illogical humor of that war.
Download or read book U S Navy U S Marine Corps and MATS Aircraft Lost During the Korean War 2017 Edition written by Douglas E. Campbell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War was the first war in which jet aircraft played a central role. For the initial months of the war, the F9F Panther and other jets dominated North Korea's prop-driven air force and later held their own against the MiGs. Within these pages are listed more than 1,140 U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and Military Air Transport Service (MATS) aircraft lost during the Korean War. These aircraft were spread across 19 different ships, 126 different squadrons, by 12 aircraft manufacturers building nearly 60 different types and variants to fly into war. The information on dates lost, aircraft type and manufacturer, Bureau Numbers, ship or base assigned, squadron attached, and fate of the pilot and crew, are here. In this 2017 Edition, an alphabetized index of nearly 1,300 names of pilots and crewmembers listed in the book has been added.
Download or read book Life Death and the Western Way of War written by Associate Professor of Political Science Lorenzo Zambernardi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life, Death, and the Western Way of War traces when and how western soldiers--once regarded as simple fighting tools--became the far less expendable beings that we know today. In Kant's terms, the study traces the process through which soldiers have been turned from mere military means into ends in themselves. The book argues that such a major transformation is largely the result of a shift in the social meaning ascribed to soldiers' death. It suggests that looking at death can somehow provide a privileged angle to understanding the value that societies attach to life. The narrative emerging from the empirical evidence will show that the story of attitudes towards soldiers' death is the story of a gradual, increasing process of individualization in the social meaning attached to human loss in war. Such a development, which took centuries to emerge in full, was neither simple nor linear. It was a process that the state was temporarily able to frame in the collective narrative of the nation, but which ultimately has seen the increasing importance of the life of the individual soldier. In tracing the process through which soldiers have been turned from an amorphous collective into distinct individuals, this book shows how the emphasis on the primacy of the individual has further eroded the effectiveness of western warfare as an instrument of foreign policy. In particular, the modern, liberal conception of the soldier has had the unintended consequence of jeopardizing the Clausewitzian relationship between military means and political ends.

Download or read book All Souls Day written by Joseph M. Pereira and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army attacked three villages near the German-Belgium border, surprising the Germans who surrendered with little resistance. The German army regrouped and counterattacked. A brief but horrific battle ensued, and as the enemy pressed forward, the Americans retreated in haste, leaving behind their wounded and their dead. Discussion of this week-long conflict that began on All Souls Day, November 2, 1944, has been confined to officer training school, in part due to its heavy losses and ignominy. After the war the U.S. Army returned to the battlefield to bring home its fallen. To its dismay it found that many of these men had vanished. The disappearances were puzzling and for decades the U.S. government searched unsuccessfully for clues. After poring over now-declassified battlefield reports and interviewing family members, the authors reconstruct a spellbinding story of love and sacrifice, honor and bravery, as well as a portrait of the gnawing pain of families not knowing what became of their loved ones. Ultimately this work of history and in-depth contemporary journalism proffers a glimmer of light in the ongoing search.
