Book Improving Irrigation Management in India

Download or read book Improving Irrigation Management in India written by Vasant P. Gandhi and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing crisis in water resource management today and this is becoming increasingly serious as development accelerates. The management of the water resource across vast areas of the country, and amongst millions of users is becoming a major challenge. The crucial role of irrigation in food production as well as livelihoods in India is well-known. Irrigation systems frequently show low water use efficiency, poor maintenance, and weak financial sustainability. The technical and economic solutions to the problems are typically known and often simple, but the institutional management in a participative political economy framework is becoming very difficult and is posing a serious challenge. The analysis of the shortcomings point substantially to the lack of meaningful involvement of the farmers in decision making and various physical activities. This has led to a growing emphasis on Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) which has been, by policy, promoted vigorously by the central and state governments in the past 2-3 decades. However, doubts exist regarding the extent of devolution, the institutional capacity, and the impact on agriculture and rural livelihoods. In light of this, the present research, undertaken collaboratively with the State Agro-Economic Research Centers, examines the nature and performance of PIM across three major states: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Book Improving Irrigation Performance Through the Use of Management Information Systems

Download or read book Improving Irrigation Performance Through the Use of Management Information Systems written by D. H. Murray-Rust and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many countries are facing the challenge of attempting to improve the performance of irrigation systems with fewer financial and human resources. Although there are a wide range of strategies for meeting this challenge, they almost all have one thing in common: the adoption of a management approach that includes a greater responsiveness to current and potential levels of performance. Tipically, three elements of performance-oriented management are: better and more timely access to data, an improved capacity to process the data into meaningful information on performance, and a capacity to identify causes of less than desired performance and potential solutions. This paper describes the development, introduction and use of an improved Management Information System in the Mahi Kadana Irrigation System in Gujarat, India. It represents the outcome of the first two phases of a collaboration between the Gujarat Irrigation Department, the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) at Anand, Gujarat, and the International Irrigation Management Institute (ILMI) which has its headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In undertaking this colaboration, each of the three elements of performance-oriented management has been addressed in a sequential set of activities.

Book Paths to the Emerging State in Asia and Africa

Download or read book Paths to the Emerging State in Asia and Africa written by Keijiro Otsuka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-ND license. This book addresses the issue of how a country, which was incorporated into the world economy as a periphery, could make a transition to the emerging state, capable of undertaking the task of economic development and industrialization. It offers historical and contemporary case studies of transition, as well as the international background under which such a transition was successfully made (or delayed), by combining the approaches of economic history and development economics. Its aim is to identify relevant historical contexts, that is, the ‘initial conditions’ and internal and external forces which governed the transition. It also aims to understand what current low-income developing countries require for their transition. Three economic driving forces for the transition are identified. They are: (1) labor-intensive industrialization, which offers ample employment opportunities for labor force; (2) international trade, which facilitates efficient international division of labor; and (3) agricultural development, which improves food security by increasing supply of staple foods. The book presents a bold account of each driver for the transition.

Book Managing Irrigation

Download or read book Managing Irrigation written by Norman Uphoff and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1991-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigation continues to be a vital component of human existence. The study of irrigation bureaucracy, however, is a new field for study. Defining and shaping this area of inquiry, Managing Irrigation offers analytical and prescriptive conclusions to improve the performance of bureaucracies responsible for irrigation management in developing countries. Uphoff and his colleagues envision irrigation as both a socio-technical and organizational-managerial enterprise; that considering cultural and organizational factors are as important as technological ones. Managing Irrigation develops a typology of irrigation systems and looks at differences in structures; considers objectives of irrigation management; and suggests alternatives, principles, and past experience to make irrigation agencies more effective. As such, policymakers, administrators, students, and scholars in development studies, Third World studies, political science, and sociology will find this volume most useful. "This book makes no claims to be definitive or complete: It emphasizes pragmatic approaches to problems which will be shaped by the physical, political and social characteristics of each specific irrigation scheme. This modest and sympathetic approach seems likely to reach and to influence its intended audience, and the authors are to be warmly congratulated." --Journal of Peasant Studies "It emphasizes pragmatic approaches to problems which will be shaped by the physical, political, and social characteristics of each specific irrigation scheme.
