This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanitation of Cities and Towns and the Agricultural Utilization of Excretal Matters: Report on Improved Methods of Sewage Disposal and Water Supplies It is now agreed, that sewage matter of towns, even when largely diluted with water, is a fertilizer of some value, and the point to be settled is whether it can be conveyed to the land at a cost which will render it pecuniarily valuable to the farmer. On this point Mr. Scott Burn remarks: If the present system of tubular house drains, leading to sewers, and these again to streams and rivers, is to be carried out, then it is clear that on the one hand we commit a great waste in an agricultural point of view, by throwing needlessly away that which, beyond all doubt, contains a comparatively large quan tity of fertilizing materials useful for certain crops; and on the other, we commit a great wrong in a social and sanitary 'point of view, by polluting our streams and rivers, poisoning the very sources from which we obtain the water useful for household purposes, or making our rivers huge open cesspools, to ow past or through our towns. Sending forth from day to day the seeds of death and disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Managing Wastewater in Coastal Urban Areas

Download or read book Managing Wastewater in Coastal Urban Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close to one-half of all Americans live in coastal counties. The resulting flood of wastewater, stormwater, and pollutants discharged into coastal waters is a major concern. This book offers a well-delineated approach to integrated coastal management beginning with wastewater and stormwater control. The committee presents an overview of current management practices and problems. The core of the volume is a detailed model for integrated coastal management, offering basic principles and methods, a direction for moving from general concerns to day-to-day activities, specific steps from goal setting through monitoring performance, and a base of scientific and technical information. Success stories from the Chesapeake and Santa Monica bays are included. The volume discusses potential barriers to integrated coastal management and how they may be overcome and suggests steps for introducing this concept into current programs and legislation. This practical volume will be important to anyone concerned about management of coastal waters: policymakers, resource and municipal managers, environmental professionals, concerned community groups, and researchers, as well as faculty and students in environmental studies.

Book Integrated and Hybrid Process Technology for Water and Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Integrated and Hybrid Process Technology for Water and Wastewater Treatment written by Abdul Wahab Mohammad and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tackling the issue of water and wastewater treatment nowadays requires novel approaches to ensure that sustainable development can be achieved. Water and wastewater treatment should not be seen only as an end-of-pipe solution but instead the approach should be more holistic and lead to a more sustainable process. This requires the integration of various methods/processes to obtain the most optimized design. Integrated and Hybrid Process Technology for Water and Wastewater Treatment discusses the state-of-the-art development in integrated and hybrid treatment processes and their applications to the treatment of a vast variety of water and wastewater sources. The approaches taken in this book are categorized as (i) resources recovery and consumption, (ii) optimal performance, (iii) physical and environmental footprints, (iv) zero liquid discharge concept and are (v) regulation-driven. Through these categories, readers will see how such an approach could benefit the water and wastewater industry. Each chapter discusses challenges and prospects of an integrated treatment process in achieving sustainable development. This book serves as a platform to provide ideas and to bridge the gap between laboratory-scale research and practical industry application. Includes comprehensive coverage on integrated and hybrid technology for water and wastewater treatment Takes a new approach in looking at how water and wastewater treatment contributes to sustainable development Provides future direction of research in sustainable water and wastewater treatment

Book Wastewater Biosolids to Compost

Download or read book Wastewater Biosolids to Compost written by Frank R. Spellman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE INTRODUCTION The purpose of this text is to address one small but important and significant aspect (or process) of making man-made waste disposal more earth-friendly: biosolids composting. Since 1970, much progress has been made in sewage treatment technology. Corrective actions in treating domestic and industrial wastes have advanced to the point and have been underway for a long enough period now so that today one can visit most local lakes and streams and clearly see the lake or river bottom near a shallow shoreline. This, of course, is an example of an environmental improvement that can be readily seen. This visible improvement is also a "predictor" of what the future can hold for present and future generations who respect lakes and streams, and thus the environment. Recent improvements in the water quality of streams and lakes are only a small part of the progress that has been made. Improvements in wastewater technology have also worked to improve the quality of water we use; that is, the water we drink. This last statement may seem strange to some readers. How does wastewater treatment improve the quality of potable water when we do not receive our drinking water from wastewater treatment plant effluent? Effluent from wastewater treatment plants in not normally cross-connected with their municipality's drinking water supply. Many communities draw water from streams and rivers for use in domestic potable water supplies and these same streams and rivers serve as outfalls, normally upstream, for wastewater treatment plant effluent. Communities are growing. Populations within these burgeoning communities are also growing. Along with growth in community size and in population is a corresponding growth in the need for more potable water. Thus, the stream or river that provides the water supply and serves as the outfall for wastewater treatment plant effluent is put under increasing demand for its main product: potable water. Wastewater Biosolids to Compost covers EPA 503 regulations, testing procedures, advancements in odor control, marketing the product, and composting program economics.
