Book Deformation Response and Formability Limit Diagram Estimates of Dual Phase Steels

Download or read book Deformation Response and Formability Limit Diagram Estimates of Dual Phase Steels written by Esteban Espinosa and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Dual-Phase (DP) steel sheet with desirable mechanical properties are developed using trialand-error methods that are time-consuming and expensive. Using only micro-structural information, methods to predict stress-strain under tension, reverse yield under compression following tensile loading, and a lower-bound formability limit diagram (FLD) are developed. Mean-field models were used to obtain the flow behavior of the composite under uni-axial loading and reverse yielding, and also serve as descriptors of stress-strain behavior of the ferrite and martensite phases in the finite element models. Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) of the steel were used for the creation of a morphologically realistic Finite Element Model, which in turn allows prediction of flow behavior under uni-axial and plane strain loading. The latter allows estimation of the FLD using the Marciniak-Kuczynski (M-K) and Modified Maximum Force Criterion (MMFC) approaches. Computations with the RVE models afford insights into the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties.

Book Formability and Microstructural Characterization of Sintered Powder Metallurgical Preforms of Dual Phase Steel

Download or read book Formability and Microstructural Characterization of Sintered Powder Metallurgical Preforms of Dual Phase Steel written by K. Mahesh and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to improve mechanical properties of powder metallurgical (P/M) preforms of ferrite-pearlite steel, a ferrite-martensite dual-phase P/M steel was produced through intercritical annealing. In the present paper, the densification characteristics and formability of sintered preforms of dual-phase P/M steel and its comparison with preforms of ferrite-pearlite P/M steel are presented. The elemental powders of required composition were thoroughly mixed and steel compacts with different preform densities were produced by applying recommended pressures. The sintered preform consisted of ferrite-pearlite microstructure whereas intercritically annealed preform contained fine martensite distributed in ferrite matrix. The variation in porosity for different preform densities was approximately in the range of 5 %-28 % for both the steels. Stage wise upsetting was performed to obtain the densification curves, and compression tests were carried out to estimate the apparent strength coefficient (Ka) and apparent strain-hardening exponent (na), to generate the forming limit diagram (FLD) for both the steels. With increasing mean preform density, the Ka values were increasing, whereas the na values were decreasing for both sintered and dual-phase steels. In FLD, the transition of Ka and na values was at critical transition density (CTD) of 6.43 g/cm3 and 6.15 g/cm3 for sintered and dual-phase steel, respectively. Thus, an increase of 4.5 % of safe zone limit in FLD was observed in dual-phase steel, which facilitates the selection of lower preform density for forming process. Interestingly, the contiguity ratio of the martensite phase was increasing with increase in the mean preform density, which changes significantly after CTD of 6.15 g/cm3 in dual-phase P/M steel.

Book Novel Concepts for New Generation of High Strength Hot Dip Galvanizing Steel with Extra Formability NEWGENHSS

Download or read book Novel Concepts for New Generation of High Strength Hot Dip Galvanizing Steel with Extra Formability NEWGENHSS written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High strength steels with improved formability offer the potential of thickness reductions in forming automotive parts and thus contribute to lightweight concepts. In this context the NEWGENHSS Research Project aimed at the definition of innovative hot dip galvanized high strength steels for the automotive market. The dual phase and the interstitial free/HSS steel concepts were studied. The main objective was to select one dual-phase (DP) and one Interstitial Free high strength steel (IF-HSS) for a real industrial and application trial, with the purpose of obtaining the validation of the selected steel grades by the customers. . In the frame of NEWGENHSS Project, WPs structure followed a full material development path, starting from definition of laboratory scale investigations to final real car parts evaluation.^WP1 was addressed to the definition and preparation of laboratory casts of DP (ST1 and ST2) and IF-HSS (ST3, ST4 and ST5) steels, and their full characterization, by means of thermomechanical processing, microstructure investigation, mechanical properties and CCT curves. Results lead to the selection of several chemical compositions to be produced and tested in WP2 in a larger scale, in which such steels have been characterized to prepare the final industrial trials scheduled in WP3. On the basis of the new alloying concepts, an efficient processing route was defined for the DP steels that skip the cold-rolling step by making use of a low coiling temperature. This energyefficient processing route allows to reduce the production costs by around 10%. Aluminum addition concept in IF-HSS allowed to define a robust reduced temperature annealing cycle, meeting the high formability requirements together with targeted high strength.^After all the above mentioned production and characterization steps, WP4 was devoted to the final evaluation of the selected materials. For this purpose, cooperation with car-makers was established to produce real car parts for weight saving potential evaluation, as well as overall formability. The results allowed, an improved hole expansion ratio by 5% to 23% depending on composition and processing route (absolute values) and a higher FLC of the cold-rolled and annealed materials (10% higher for DP-Si and 14% higher for DP-B). In addition, complex forming operations could be realized without failure and welding was performed without problems due to the low carbon equivalent. The project outcome is potential weight reductions up to 20% in comparison to conventional microalloyed grades, allowing CO2 reductions in the transportation sector and the newly developed DP steels are ready for the market.
