Download or read book United States Army Aviators Clothing 1917 1945 written by C.G. Sweeting and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of World War I saw thousands of army and navy aviators who needed specialized clothing that could not be purchased off-the-shelf. During World War II pilots and crews flew countless missions in extreme conditions, from the Arctic to the South Pacific. Through both wars, providing suitable clothing to personnel aboard many different types of aircraft proved a monumental task. This book documents the development, testing, manufacture, procurement and utilization of flying apparel and accessories worn by American airmen around the world between 1917 and 1945. Among the garments explored are various types of flight suits--including heavy winter shearling suits and electrically heated suits--flight jackets, flotation gear, headgear, handwear and footwear. With appendices that include contemporary brochures detailing the care and maintenance of flight clothing, this study provides a thorough exploration of a rarely examined aspect of military history.

Download or read book Aircraft Noise written by Max H. O'Connell and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All persons associated with the operation of military aircraft are exposed at one time or another to hazardous noise. In past years attention was directed only to the noise problems encountered by aircrew members, namely, possible noise-induced hearing loss, excessive fatigue, and difficulty of voice communication. Air-Force-wide adoption of the turbojet-powered aircraft has prompted the giving of special attention to the hazardous noise environment of men working on and near aircraft on the ground. While aircrew members of some aircraft are exposed to high-intensity noise levels, the aircraft ground maintenance crews receive most of the hazardous noise exposures.

Download or read book US Army Air Force 1 written by Gordon L. Rottman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1941 the US Army's air organisations were consolidated under a single command, the Army Air Forces or AAF. Its expansion was rapid and massive, and its contribution to the war effort was substantial. Books abound describing the AAF's impressive combat record, but little has been published to record what the men inside the machines wore to stay alive and effective in the air and on the ground, or, as often as not, in the water. Gordon L. Rottman's detailed treatment discusses the flying clothes, accessories and equipment worn and used by individual airmen fighting their often desperate battles in the sky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete guide to the WWI uniforms and equipment of RFC pilots and airmen—fully illustrated with color photos. When the First World War began in 1914, the newly formed Royal Flying Corps was put to the ultimate test. As the Great War raged, the developments in military aviation were profound, not only in terms of aerial warfare, but also—as this book reveals—in the uniforms and equipment the aircrew used. All the objects that a Royal Flying Corps pilot or airman was issued for sorties over the Western Front are explored in this book. Amply illustrated with high-definition color photographs, it details everything from clothing and headgear to personal weapons, gloves, goggles and early life preservers. Each item is fully described, and its purpose and use explained.
