Book Impressions of Italy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Impressions of Italy Classic Reprint written by Paul Bourget and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Italy Reader, do you still cherish, in despite of unhappy political misunderstandings, a passionate admiration for Italy, and especially for the secluded spots which have longest resisted the leveling influences of cosmopolitanism? Once you have crossed the Alps do your thoughts wander, as you turn over the leaves of the Guide, to those little towns which contain two or three pictures only, but divine pictures, or pictures whose legendary fame evokes some great historical memory? Do you enjoy narratives of travel without requiring anything more from them than that they shall have been written on the spot, and that, if they have been written by a simple tourist, he shall at least be a tourist who has been the first to take pleasure in his tour? Are you content with a description merely literary - a style now out of fashion - of a picture or a statue without exacting documentary proof of its authenticity? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Italy: Impressions and Observations of an American Newspaper Man During the Early Months of the War Against Austria To the stranger within the city's gates it is a cheerful and apparently carefree crowd. There is nothing exceptional in evidence to indicate an extraordinary state of affairs in the country. To be sure, there is a liberal display of the national colors, and here and there one also sees the flag of Great Britain or of France or of Russia, and there is a rather unusual number of men in military uni forms; but as the uniforms all seem so natty and new, the day a holiday and Milan the headquarters of an army corps, even this fact might occasion no special comment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Cities of Italy You cannot know what tender memories you have awakened in my mind! The reading of your book has been for me one of the charms of Paris. But it is not necessary to have been raised in Tuscany to enjoy your work. I finished the read ing at Turin. The interest increases as one proceeds. These impressions of a journey, appar ently detached thoughts upon a wide range of subjects, form a grand and unique picture. In it you have mingled historical associations, im pressions of art, descriptions of the country, with Social and philosophical theories. As a historian, I should be tempted to seek a quarrel with you on several points, and I must make some reserves upon certain rather too bold theories. But as an Italian, and as a man of letters, I cannot but congratulate myself and you upon the consummate ability with which you have given form and life to the diverse elements of which your material is composed, art and history. They contain the records of a brief and brilliant episode in my life, which filled my memory with images alike beautiful and enduring. They are printed in the belief, or at least the hope, that those who have visited the same scenes will not regret to have their impressions renewed, and that those who are looking forward to Italy, as to a land of promise, will find here some hints and suggestions which may aid them in their preparation. Book Scenes and Impressions in Switzerland and the North of Italy

Download or read book Scenes and Impressions in Switzerland and the North of Italy written by David Thomas Kerr Drummond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes and Impressions in Switzerland and the North of Italy: Taken From the Notes of a Pour Months Tour During the Summer of 1852, Together With Some Preliminary Remarks on the Religious State of These Countries It certainly appears a bold thing to publish a journal, at this time of day, regarding countries, every nook and corner of which have been ransacked by numberless travellers, and all valuable and inter esting information about which has already been recorded. Still I can find some excuses for my temerity. My first is in the partiality of my friends, whose interest will be called forth by the following pages, because they are interested in the author. My next is, in the fact, that in these days, when the ends of the earth are brought to gether, and accounts of the most distant and hitherto inaccessible countries are multiplied, some passing reference to nearer scenes, be ginning to be overlooked and almost forgotten, might perhaps revive a transient interest in the latter -while my last excuse is derived from that which, at first sight, would appear to make it inexcusable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Something of Italy The present volume is only what it purports to be, Something, not much, about italy - just those glances at the country, its people, and usages which were casually obtained during a three months' excursion in the spring and summer of 1862, along with such observations as are suggested by the hopeful progress of those portions of the Italian peninsula lately nationalised, as well as by the dismal backwardness of those other parts - Rome and Venetia - still under an antiquated and relentless thraldom. The illustrations are chie y from photographs, in the prepara tion of which the Italians sustain their reputation for artistic excellence. It has to be added, that the substance of the volume appeared as detached papers in the Journal with which the. Book A Short History of Italy 476 1900 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of Italy 476 1900 Classic Reprint written by Henry Dwight Sedgwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Italy (476-1900) This volume is a mere sketch in outline; it makes no pretence to original investigation, or even to an extended examination of the voluminous literature which deals with every part of its subject. It is an attempt to give a correct impression of Italian history as a whole, and employs details only here and there, and then merely for the sake of giving greater clearness to the general outline. So brief a narrative is mainly a work of selection; and perhaps no two persons would agree upon what to put in and what to leave out. I have laid emphasis upon the matters of greatest general interest, the Papacy, the Renaissance, and the Risorgimento; and my special object has been to put in high relief those achieve ments which make Italy so charming and so interest ing to the world, and to give what space was possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edens of Italy N our day it has come to pass, that the tour of Europe is quite I commonly regarded as the essential complement of a good education. Perhaps no popular notion is better founded in fact; since, of all means merely human, foreign travel is the most effectual for expanding the mind and improving the heart. But to the classical scholar and the student of history what other transatlantic country is so full of interest and instruction as Italy Among the many, however, who visit that land of art and beauty, how few can say they have really seen it! Hare says, not more than one in five hundred. A month they spend in Rome, a fortnight in Naples, a week in Florence, three days in Venice, and two perchance in Milan. To a score of other cities, as rich in classic interest and heroic fame as in the productions of the pencil and the chisel, if they visit them at all, they can give but a few hurried hours, and these for the most part very poorly employed. Travelling per le paste with fresh relays of horses every two leagues, or dozing on velvet cushions while charioted along thirty miles an hour by stradaferrata, as if their aim were to get over as much ground and acquire as little knowl edge as possible, they make the tour of Italy with hardly a single valuable acquisition to their small stock of intelligence, and actually profit less from their trip than he who carries'an artist outside of his coach to sketch whatever of interest he may pass while sleeping within. Book Impressions Thoughts and Sketches

Download or read book Impressions Thoughts and Sketches written by Martha Macdonald Lamont and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions, Thoughts, and Sketches: During Two Years in France and Switzerland The following day was like all those which have passed since I left you, sunny and pleasant. When we stopped to breakfast we entered into conversation with two Italian gentlemen on their return from England. One of them was addressed as general. One of the carbonari or illuminati gentlemen, I suppose, for he told me he had had a great deal of trouble and vexation about his passport in France, and in other countries, but not in England - certainly England is kind to all radicals except her own, - he entreated me to visit Italy, and said he would give me letters of introduction to three married daughters of his, at Genoa, Milan, Padua. At this moment I feel as if I were far enough from you, and have no wish to extend my travels, but there have been times when the idea of visiting Italy would have delighted me. But one has no conception until one is in a foreign land alone what a terrible feeling is that of being so far from home, being quite among strangers. We cannot help wishing to see those places which are famous in history, and there must be pleasure in the gratification of our wish; yet after all, travelling is, I begin to suspect, a finer thing in imagination than in reality.
