Book Promoting Rural Cooperatives in Developing Countries

Download or read book Promoting Rural Cooperatives in Developing Countries written by Avishay Braverman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic crisis in sub - Saharan Africa presents a major challenge to donors and to policy-makers. After an initial period of growth following independence, most African economies faltered, then failed. Repressed producer prices, inefficient public marketing boards, and weak government commitment have often been blamed for the poor performance of agriculture, Africa's most important sector. Thus, since the mid-1980s, many structural adjustment programs have emphasized price and marketing reforms, and countries have liberalized the marketing and pricing of major food crops. These reforms have improved the performance of the agricultural sector, but the effects on growth and real income have not met expectations. Deficient infrastructure, inadequate access to inputs and credit, poor extension services, and inefficient marketing systems constrain the effective expansion of production. There must be reforms that specifically address these constraints. This paper examines the reasons behind successful and unsuccessful experiences with rural co-ops and reevaluates the potential for remedying the major problems. It briefly explains the motivation for and effectiveness of rural co-ops in developed countries through the example of the Dutch. It then focuses on the development of rural cooperatives in sub - Saharan Africa and on the main issues and problems, including internal and external constraints.

Book Cooperatives Economic Democratization and Rural Development

Download or read book Cooperatives Economic Democratization and Rural Development written by Jos Bijman and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural cooperatives and producer organizations are institutional innovations which have the potential to reduce poverty and improve food security. This book presents a raft of international case studies, from developing and transition countries, to analyse the internal and external challenges that these complex organizations face and the solutions that they have developed. The contributors provide an increased understanding of the transformation of traditional community organizations into modern farmer-owned businesses. They cover issues including: the impact on rural development and inclusiveness, the role of social capital, formal versus informal organizations, democratic participation and member relations, and their role in value chains. Students and scholars will find the book’s multidisciplinary approach useful in their research. It will also be of interest to policy-makers seeking to understand the wide diversity of organizational forms and functions. NGOs, donors and governments seeking to support rural developments will benefit from the discussions raised in this book.

Book Cooperatives and Social Innovation

Download or read book Cooperatives and Social Innovation written by D. Rajasekhar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses social innovations by cooperatives from the Asia and Pacific region. Social innovations emerge when the state and market in developing countries find it difficult to solve problems such as poverty, hunger, ill health, poor education systems, inadequate drinking water and poor sanitation. These countries also face barriers to economic growth such as climate change, poor governance, unequal opportunities and social exclusion. This volume therefore addresses the following questions. What are the distinctive features of social innovations by cooperatives? How social innovations bring in changes in the process and outcome of development? After presenting theories of social innovation and a critical review of cooperatives and social innovation, the book presents 15 chapters on social innovations by cooperatives in the Asia Pacific region. These social innovations are related to health insurance, community based tourism, disaster response, climate smart agriculture, use of social media for youth empowerment, training for the emergence of second-line leaders in cooperatives, social inclusion through innovative finance, profitable marketing of organic produce to strengthen economic status of small farmers, digital auction and value addition for income security of farmer members, collaboration between cooperative members and workers for the mutual benefit, worker cooperatives, women leadership and participation, building union-cooperative partnership in finance and rating of cooperatives to promote transparency and accountability. A chapter on innovative services of cooperatives during the time of Covid19 is also included. This volume will be quite significant for co-operators, researchers, teachers, practitioners and policy-makers at the global level. The theme is relevant for international development community and national cooperatives with concern for their communities, which is the seventh cooperative principle of International Cooperative Alliance and the Sustainable Development Goal of the UN.

Book Rural Cooperation

Download or read book Rural Cooperation written by F. F. Lyimo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'No person, no country in the world, irrespective of its stage of development, is fully self-sufficient. Cooperation brings together peoples and nations and facilitates peaceful co-existence.' So begins Rural Cooperation In The Cooperative Movement In Tanzania, what will undoubtedly be seen as a seminal work in the field. The author has lectured a course on Rural Cooperation in Tanzania at the University of Dar es Salaam for seven consecutive years, but lack of appropriate books with adequate coverage of the course content obliged him to conduct extensive research on cooperation and cooperatives. The resulting book covers the entire field and addresses the subject by providing a foundation on which wider study can be based. It is intended to make its readers aware of the strategies and challenges of cooperation and has a wider relevance, as it will be useful to policy makers in the cooperative sector, which is a significant part of the private sector in Tanzania, and indeed in most African countries. By June 2008, there were 2614 agricultural marketing cooperative societies, 4780 savings and credits cooperative societies, 71 livestock cooperative societies, 129 fishing cooperative societies, 11 housing cooperative societies, 3 mining cooperative societies, 185 industrial cooperative societies, 98 water irrigation cooperative societies, 4 transport cooperative societies, 103 consumer cooperative societies, and 553 service and other cooperative societies; perfectly illustrative of the movement's scope and the need to pay it careful attention. The topics included make it appropriate for use in Sociology, Rural Development, Marketing, Development Studies and studies in other specialties in the Social Sciences. From an exploration of the cooperative movement's various international iterations to a perspicacious survey of the history of cooperatives in Tanzania, Dr. Lyimo highlights the issues facing farmers and business people and illustrates the way in which cooperative effort- enterprises that put people, and not capital, at the center of their business- can not only improve members' economic power in bargaining for better marketing conditions and prices, but also to increase employment opportunities, thereby improving the standard of living for a large number of people. In these times of penury and economic disenfranchisement, this book not only fills the information gap, but provides, in the ultimate chapters, 'Procedures for Organizing a Cooperative Society', and 'Managing Rural Cooperative Societies', the basic principles and advice for those considering the cooperative model as the best means of improving their economic viability.
