Book Early Medieval Monetary History

Download or read book Early Medieval Monetary History written by Martin Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Blackburn was one of the leading scholars of the numismatics and monetary history of the British Isles and Scandinavia during the early medieval period. He published more than 200 books and articles on the subject, and was instrumental in building bridges between numismatics and associated disciplines, in fostering international communication and cooperation, and in establishing initiatives to record new coin finds. This memorial volume of essays commemorates Mark Blackburn’s considerable achievement and impact on the field, builds on his research and evaluates a vibrant period in the study of early medieval monetary history. Containing a broad range of high-quality research from both established figures and younger scholars, the essays in this volume maintain a tight focus on Europe in the early Middle Ages (6th-12th centuries), reflecting Mark’s primary research interests. In geographical terms the scope of the volume stretches from Spain to the Baltic, with a concentration of papers on the British Isles. As well as a fitting tribute to remarkable scholar, the essays in this collection constitute a major body of research which will be of long-term value to anyone with an interest in the history of early medieval Europe.

Book Medieval Coins and Seals

Download or read book Medieval Coins and Seals written by Susan Solway and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Coins and Seals: Constructing Identity, Signifying Power showcases these objects as intrinsic and highly significant aspects of medieval visual culture, and contributes to an understanding of the many ways in which they functioned as conveyors of meaning in Western European, Islamic, and Byzantine cultures from the fifth to the fifteenth century. The essays presented here, by art historians, numismatists, sigillographers, and historians on a wide variety of coins and seals, afford fresh insight into these tantalizing relics of medieval art and the vibrant cultural roles they played at the time of their creation. Through their images and inscriptions, they conveyed complex cultural attitudes by means of sophisticated visual strategies carefully constructed to further the subjective agendas of rulers and -- in the case of seals -- of aristocrats, ordinary individuals, towns, corporations, and government officials. The messages conveyed by these tightly controlled objects were, above all, ones of authority, identity, and legitimacy, with goals or subtexts that included the politics of self- presentation; the construction of personal, civic, national and cultural identity; the advertisement of dynastic succession; and much more. As forceful modes of visual discourse designed to carry calculated, at times propagandistic, communications to broadly dispersed audiences, coins and seals actively served during these centuries as sociocultural agents that helped mold public opinion (as they had in antiquity), and thereby shaped the medieval world.

Book Ancient and Early Medieval Coins from Cornwall Scilly

Download or read book Ancient and Early Medieval Coins from Cornwall Scilly written by Roger David Penhallurick and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain, unlike Europe, does not have a tradition of publishing regional numismatic corpora to agreed national standards. So far, only the Roman coins from North-West England and Wales have been published in detail. Roger Penhallurick was the late Senior Curator of the Royal Institution of Cornwall. From a Cornish family, returned from Wales, Roger truly 'gathered up the fragments that are left, that nothing be lost', (motto of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies). He worked on his coin corpus for many years and completed it in 2000 before his untimely death in 2004. The corpus is a true testament to his enthusiasm, commitment and awareness of the importance of coin finds to the archaeology and history of Cornwall. The work of reorganising the manuscript was undertaken by Dr. Nick Wells of Cardiff University. This task proved to be rather more complicated than initially envisaged though the Editors feel that the end result is worth the effort.

Book A Cultural History of Money in the Medieval Age

Download or read book A Cultural History of Money in the Medieval Age written by Bloomsbury Publishing and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money provides a unique and illuminating perspective on the Middle Ages. In much of medieval Europe the central meaning of money was a prescribed unit of precious metal but in practice precious metal did not necessarily change hands and indeed coinage was very often in short supply. Money had economic, institutional, social, and cultural dimensions which developed the legacy of antiquity and set the scene for modern developments including the rise of capitalism and finance as well as a moralized discourse on the proper and improper uses of money. In its many forms - coin, metal, commodity, and concept - money played a central role in shaping the character of medieval society and, in turn, offers a vivid reflection of the distinctive features of medieval civilization. Drawing upon a wealth of visual and textual sources, A Cultural History of Money in the Medieval Age presents essays that examine key cultural case studies of the period on the themes of technologies, ideas, ritual and religion, the everyday, art and representation, interpretation, and the issues of the age.
