Book Do Deficits Matter

Download or read book Do Deficits Matter written by Daniel Shaviro and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do deficits matter? Yes and no, says Daniel Shaviro in this political and economic study. Yes, because fiscal policy affects generational distribution, national saving, and the level of government spending. And no, because the deficit is an inaccurate measure with little economic content. This book provides an invaluable guide for anyone wanting to know exactly what is at stake for Americans in this ongoing debate. "[An] excellent, comprehensive, and illuminating book. Its analysis, deftly integrating considerations of economics, law, politics, and philosophy, brings the issues of 'balanced budgets,' national saving, and intergenerational equity out of the area of religious crusades and into an arena of reason. . . . A magnificent, judicious, and balanced treatment. It should be read and studied not just by specialists in fiscal policy but by all those in the economic and political community."—Robert Eisner, Journal of Economic Literature "Shaviro's history, economics, and political analysis are right on the mark. For all readers."—Library Journal

Book Implications of Federal Deficit Reduction

Download or read book Implications of Federal Deficit Reduction written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reveals that the size of the deficit-reduction package under most serious consideration in Washington, a $4 trillion combination of spending cuts and tax increases over 10 years, would be inadequate to put the nation's fiscal house in order. This study finds that it will take almost $6 trillion in deficit reduction during the next decade to make a minimum down payment that puts the nation on a sounder fiscal footing. In addition, this study demonstrates it will take a $9 trillion deal, more than double the current level being discussed, to ensure the country's long-run fiscal soundness as the demands of an aging population and rising health-care costs put more strains on the federal government.

Book excerpt: Any federal deficit-reduction plan promises to rely on a combination of revenue increases and spending cuts. This Bloomberg Government Study identifies probable trends in spending reductions that will be part of a budget-cutting agreement and examines the impact those spending decreases will have on companies that do business with the federal government. As the federal budget pie shrinks during the next decade, many businesses, ranging from health-care providers to defense contractors, will find at least some of their revenue at risk. These cutbacks should accelerate several significant trends in contracting.

Book Federal Deficit Reduction

Download or read book Federal Deficit Reduction written by Dan Iglehart and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is facing fundamental budgetary challenges. Federal debt held by the public exceeds 70 percent of the nation's annual output or GDP, a percentage not seen since 1950, and a continuation of current policies would boost the debt further. Although debt would decline to 58 percent of GDP in 2022 under the current-law assumptions that underlie the CBO's baseline projections, those projections depend heavily on significant increases in taxes and decreases in spending that are scheduled to take effect at the beginning of January. If, instead, lawmakers maintained current policies by preventing most of those changes from occurring, what the CBO refers to as the alternative fiscal scenario, debt held by the public would increase to 90 percent of GDP 10 years from now and continue to rise rapidly thereafter. This book reviews the scale and sources of the federal government's budgetary imbalance, various options for bringing spending and taxes into closer alignment, and criteria that lawmakers and the public might use to evaluate different approaches to deficit reduction.

Book excerpt: Articles, reports, and books on the federal debt and its effects tend to be complex and technical. As a result, the public frequently misunderstands these issues. For example, people often forget that even if Congress and the President agree to balance the annual budget within the next several years, the federal debt will continue to grow until balance is actually achieved. Although declining deficits and, ultimately, balanced budgets could reduce the debt as a share of the economy, the debt will not decline unless there is a budget surplus. This document responds to frequently asked questions about the federal debt, deficits, and interest rates. GAO organizes these questions into three sections: (1) trends in the federal debt, deficits, and interest; (2) sales and ownership of federal debt; and (3) effects of the federal debt. For readers who are interested in more detailed information on these topics, GAO includes a short bibliography.

Book The Economic Consequences of Government Deficits

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 29 and 30, 1982, the Center for the Study of American Business and the Institute for Banking and Financial Markets at Washington "The Economic Consequences of University cosponsored a conference on Government Deficits. " This was the sixth annual Economic Policy Con ference sponsored by the Center, and the first it has cosponsored with the Institute. This book contains the papers and comments delivered at that conference. Recent and prospective large federal deficits have prompted a thorough reconsideration of the political sources and economic consequences of government deficits. The papers in Part I focus on the implications of deficits for monetary growth and inflation, and the papers in Part II consider the effect of deficits on interest rates and capital formation. The papers in Part III deal with the political sources and remedies for the explosive growth in government spending and increased reliance on deficits. The papers in Part I by Alan S. Blinder, Professor of Economics at Princeton University, and Preston J. Miller, Assistant Vice President and Research Advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, discuss the relation between monetary growth and deficits and present evidence on the of deficits on inflation and output.
