Book Evolution of an Operating System for Large scale Shared memory Multiprocessors

Download or read book Evolution of an Operating System for Large scale Shared memory Multiprocessors written by Michael Lee Scott and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psyche project is characterized by (1) a design that permits the implementation of multiple models of parallelism, both within and among applications, (2) the ability to trade protection for performance, with information sharing as the default, rather than the exception, (3) explicit, user-level control of process structure and scheduling, and (4) a kernel implementation that uses shared memory itself, and that provides users with the illusion of uniform memory access times.

Book Scalable Shared Memory Multiprocessors

Download or read book Scalable Shared Memory Multiprocessors written by Michel Dubois and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop on Scalable Shared Memory Multiprocessors took place on May 26 and 27 1990 at the Stouffer Madison Hotel in Seattle, Washington as a prelude to the 1990 International Symposium on Computer Architecture. About 100 participants listened for two days to the presentations of 22 invited The motivation for this workshop was to speakers, from academia and industry. promote the free exchange of ideas among researchers working on shared-memory multiprocessor architectures. There was ample opportunity to argue with speakers, and certainly participants did not refrain a bit from doing so. Clearly, the problem of scalability in shared-memory multiprocessors is still a wide-open question. We were even unable to agree on a definition of "scalability". Authors had more than six months to prepare their manuscript, and therefore the papers included in this proceedings are refinements of the speakers' presentations, based on the criticisms received at the workshop. As a result, 17 authors contributed to these proceedings. We wish to thank them for their diligence and care. The contributions in these proceedings can be partitioned into four categories 1. Access Order and Synchronization 2. Performance 3. Cache Protocols and Architectures 4. Distributed Shared Memory Particular topics on which new ideas and results are presented in these proceedings include: efficient schemes for combining networks, formal specification of shared memory models, correctness of trace-driven simulations, synchronization, various coherence protocols, .

Book An Efficient and General Implementation of Futures on Large Scale Shared memory Multiprocessors microform

Download or read book An Efficient and General Implementation of Futures on Large Scale Shared memory Multiprocessors microform written by Marc Feeley and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International. This book was released on 1993 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difference in performance is as high as a factor of two when a cache is availabe and a factor of 1.2 when a cache is not available. In addition, the thesis shows that the semantics of the Multilisp language does not have to be impoverished to attain good performance. The laziness of LTC can be exploited to support at virtually no cost several programming features including: the Katz-Weise continuation semantics with legitimacy, dynamic scoping, and fairness."

Book Shared Memory Multiprocessing

Download or read book Shared Memory Multiprocessing written by Norihisa Suzuki and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shared memory multiprocessors are becoming the dominant architecture for small-scale parallel computation. This book is the first to provide a coherent review of current research in shared memory multiprocessing in the United States and Japan. It focuses particularly on scalable architecture that will be able to support hundreds of microprocessors as well as on efficient and economical ways of connecting these fast microprocessors. The 20 contributions are divided into sections covering the experience to date with multiprocessors, cache coherency, software systems, and examples of scalable shared memory multiprocessors.

Book Distributed Shared Memory

Download or read book Distributed Shared Memory written by Jelica Protic and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1997-08-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers present in this text survey both distributed shared memory (DSM) efforts and commercial DSM systems. The book discusses relevant issues that make the concept of DSM one of the most attractive approaches for building large-scale, high-performance multiprocessor systems. The authors provide a general introduction to the DSM field as well as a broad survey of the basic DSM concepts, mechanisms, design issues, and systems. The book concentrates on basic DSM algorithms, their enhancements, and their performance evaluation. In addition, it details implementations that employ DSM solutions at the software and the hardware level. This guide is a research and development reference that provides state-of-the art information that will be useful to architects, designers, and programmers of DSM systems.

Book Shared Memory Parallelism Can be Simple Fast and Scalable

Download or read book Shared Memory Parallelism Can be Simple Fast and Scalable written by Julian Shun and published by Morgan & Claypool. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallelism is the key to achieving high performance in computing. However, writing efficient and scalable parallel programs is notoriously difficult, and often requires significant expertise. To address this challenge, it is crucial to provide programmers with high-level tools to enable them to develop solutions easily, and at the same time emphasize the theoretical and practical aspects of algorithm design to allow the solutions developed to run efficiently under many different settings. This thesis addresses this challenge using a three-pronged approach consisting of the design of shared-memory programming techniques, frameworks, and algorithms for important problems in computing. The thesis provides evidence that with appropriate programming techniques, frameworks, and algorithms, shared-memory programs can be simple, fast, and scalable, both in theory and in practice. The results developed in this thesis serve to ease the transition into the multicore era. The first part of this thesis introduces tools and techniques for deterministic parallel programming, including means for encapsulating nondeterminism via powerful commutative building blocks, as well as a novel framework for executing sequential iterative loops in parallel, which lead to deterministic parallel algorithms that are efficient both in theory and in practice. The second part of this thesis introduces Ligra, the first high-level shared memory framework for parallel graph traversal algorithms. The framework allows programmers to express graph traversal algorithms using very short and concise code, delivers performance competitive with that of highly-optimized code, and is up to orders of magnitude faster than existing systems designed for distributed memory. This part of the thesis also introduces Ligra+, which extends Ligra with graph compression techniques to reduce space usage and improve parallel performance at the same time, and is also the first graph processing system to support in-memory graph compression. The third and fourth parts of this thesis bridge the gap between theory and practice in parallel algorithm design by introducing the first algorithms for a variety of important problems on graphs and strings that are efficient both in theory and in practice. For example, the thesis develops the first linear-work and polylogarithmic-depth algorithms for suffix tree construction and graph connectivity that are also practical, as well as a work-efficient, polylogarithmic-depth, and cache-efficient shared-memory algorithm for triangle computations that achieves a 2–5x speedup over the best existing algorithms on 40 cores. This is a revised version of the thesis that won the 2015 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.
