Book excerpt: As part of research into the geological disposal of radioactive waste in Belgium, the HADES underground research laboratory (URL) was constructed in a clay formation in the early 1980s. This was the world's first purpose-built URL in a deep clay formation. Over the past four decades, the HADES URL has played an important role in the research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of geological disposal. It enabled the in situ characterization of the clay host rock, it allowed experiments to be performed under realistic geological conditions and it demonstrated the feasibility of constructing, operating and closing underground repositories. This volume presents several key contributions of the HADES URL to both Belgian and international research into geological disposal. It not only compiles some important RD&D results, but also illustrates the essential role URLs such as the HADES URL have played in developing concepts for the geological disposal of radioactive waste.

The European waste management organizations share the opinion that it is time to proceed to license the construction and operation of deep geological repositories for disposal. This view is also shared by most stakeholders in Europe. The Implementing Geological Disposal Technology Platform (IGD-TP) will provide opportunities to take part in the planning of research, development and demonstration (RD&D) activities, to participate in important information exchange and knowledge transfer and to efficiently contribute to the objective of implementation of the first repositories for spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive wastes by 2025. This document has been prepared by an Interim Executive Group (IEG) with members from SKB (Sweden), Posiva (Finland), Andra (France) and the federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi, Germany). Active support in the preparations, and endorsement of the Vision Document, has also been received from ONDRAF (Belgium), ENRESA (Spain), Nagra (Switzerland) and from NDA (United Kingdom). This publication provides the starting point for the launch of the IGD-TP and contains background information about the management of spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive waste.--Publisher's description.
